1. Practice the do’s and don’ts of tour guiding.
LEARNING TASK 1
Direction: In the diagram below write the common rules on tour guiding
B. DEVELOPMENT
Discussion of the Key Concepts
The Tour Guide's responsibilities include planning travel itineraries, familiarizing customers with the locality by
vehicle or foot, and ensuring that the group remains safe at all times. You should also stay up-to-date with
new attractions that may be of interest to customers. Before starting the tour, it is very important that you know the Do’s
and Don’ts in tour guiding.

Do’s and Don’ts in Tour Guiding

Do’s
1. Be punctual or even early.
2. Come prepared; research well.
3. Be cordial and pleasant.
4. Watch your own health.
5. Be sensitive to the guests’ needs
6. Allow time for guests to digest the information and interact.
Don’t
1. Be late.
2. Provide false or unsure information.
3. Show exhaustion.
4. Overdo things.
5. Sell anything on the first meeting.
6. Talk all the time.
Punctuality is the first sign of professionalism, it means that the guide values the tourists, the business, and the
profession. Sticking to the schedule benefits everybody in the tour group and underscores the credibility of the guide’s
instructions.
Prior preparation means being familiar with the destination and anticipating the tourists’ needs. It includes a briefing
from the tour company about the tour group and their itinerary, an ocular or familiarization visit prior to the actual tour,
and genuine acts of thoughtfulness such as putting oneself in the shoes of the tourists. There are times when unexpected
things happen. Sometimes, tourists do ask questions that the guide is unable to anticipate. Be honest to admit what you
do not know and be prepared to ask a friend or the authorities for help.
Tour guides should be kind and patient. They should always be cordial and pleasant all the time. They must not show
exhaustion or irritability, especially to the tourists. Tour guides must take care of themselves properly. Their body is
their best asset; thus, they must know when to stop and rest. Overindulgence on food and alcohol, and too much
exposure to the sun, wind, dust and other elements may harm one’s health. Walking and standing for hours are also part
of the tour guide’s job. Hence, tour guides must have discipline, wear proper attire and use voice amplifiers when
needed.
Tour guides must also take care of the tourists and their needs. Selling souvenir items or local currency may be impolite
for the tour guide to do on the first meeting but there are instances when this becomes necessary, especially in remote
areas where such services are not available. Tour guides must be sensitive to the cultural background and needs of the
tourists to serve them well. Lastly, tour guides must know when to stop talking and allow the tourists to rest and
appreciate the attraction on their own and interact with other tourists. Encourage guests to participate but never allow
them to speak on the microphone.
LEARNING TASK 2
Direction: Modified TRUE or FALSE. Write T if the statement is TRUE and F if FALSE. If the statement is FALSE,
write the correct statement to make it true.
1. You can encourage the guests to participate and allow them to speak on the microphone.
2. Being late is a first sign of professionalism.
3. Tour guides must be sensitive to the cultural background and needs of the tourists to serve them well.
4. Tour guides are not required to wear proper attire.
5. Sticking to the schedule will not benefit everybody in the tour group and underscores the credibility of the guide’s
instructions.
6. Selling souvenir items or local currency may be impolite for the tour guide to do.
7. Tour guides should be kind and patient.
8. As a tour guide showing to the tourists how exhausted you are is just normal.
9. Tour guides must take care of themselves properly.
10. Tour guides must also take care of the tourists and their need
Knowing and practicing the Do’s and Don’ts of the tour guiding is one of the means to a successful tour.

“A group of tourists plans a trip to Tagaytay for a day tour. Their tour guide prepared their itinerary a day before the
trip. He made sure to wear proper attire and to come to the place prior the arrival of his guests. Upon the arrival of the
guests the tour guide started selling souvenirs on his guests. The tour guide informs and entertain the guests about the
tourist’s destinations on Tagaytay and allow the guests to rest and appreciate the attraction. One of the guests forgot to
bring her pack lunch and was so hungry. The tour guide quickly looks for a restaurant so that the guest can buy her
meal. While the trip is ongoing the tour guide express how tired and exhausted and decided to take a rest.”
