Copy and Paste Objects

One of the trickiest MetaTrader 4 tips is to use the same objects multiple times. For instance, imagine you
count waves with the Elliott Waves Theory.
Essentially, it means placing a bunch of numbers and letters on charts, to count impulsive or corrective
waves. Following a precise set of rules, traders can forecast the next market move.
But the numbers and letters are the same: 1-2-3-4-5 and a-b-c. Sometimes, an intervening x-wave appears
too. However, that’s pretty much it.
It means that the copy and paste function is useful again. To use it, follow these steps:

 select an object from a chart (e.g. trendline, text, channel, etc.).

 push down the CTRL tab on your P.C.
 click the object again
 drag the new object to the desired location

Following these four steps in this sequence is important. By the time you click the object again, having the
CTRL tab pushed, the MT4 platform projects a new, identical object right on top of the existing one.

Pack Up and Leave

What happens if you decide to change the broker? What will happen to all the hard work you’ve put into
building your trading setups? Will everything disappear?
Nope!
This is one of the major reasons why both retail traders and brokerage houses like the MT4 platform.
Traders can easily pack up their analysis and leave to a new MT4 trading account and broker.
All you have to do is to follow the File/Open data folder path and copy the “profiles” folder. Save it
somewhere safe on your computer and follow the same steps on the new broker’s MT4 platform.
Finally, paste the “profiles” folder into the new account. When restarting the trading platform, everything
that was on the old broker’s platform will re-appear here too.

Measure Distances – MT4 Tips and Tricks

Ever wondering how long (pips or bars) the last wave of a trend was, or how
many pips to where you want to put a stop loss or profit target? Or how many
bars there are in each trend cycle?
There is a “ruler” function in MetaTrader 4 trading software which allows you
to easily measure one point on a chart to another. A very handy MT4 Tip
indeed.
-Click your mouse wheel to bring up the crosshairs (no mouse wheel? hit Ctrl-
F to bring up the crosshairs). Then hold down the left mouse button from a
particular point and drag the cursor to another point to measure the distance.
The MT4 ruler appears and provides three pieces of data along with it. The
first piece of data is the number of bars between the origin and second price
point. The next number tells you how many pips from the first point to the
second. Since most brokers offer fractional pip pricing a reading of 61 means
6.1 pips. 125 means 12.5. The third number that appears is the price your
cursor is currently at.
Here is a sample screenshot of the MT4 ruler:
 MT4 Ruler Function
The chart above shows the ruler (angled black line) extending 7 bars to the
right of the origin. The endpoint of the ruler is 262.6 pips from the origin, and
end point of the ruler is located at 1.22151

Tempelate

Alternatively, or additionally, you can save a chart template with your program setup.
Right-click on the chart, select Template then save with a meaningful name.
Top Tip: to have any charts, that you open in the future, use the same template, save as
the 'Default' name shown in the list.
You can also create a default template for use with Strategy Tester of your EAs: save
the template as "Tester.tpl"

Change Profiles quickly

Profiles allow you to organise charts into logical groups and reduce the burden on your processor
from having too many charts constantly updating. For example, you might want to have separate
profiles for M1, , H1 and D1 charts, so you can just switch profiles at certain times of day.
The usual way for switching profiles would be: -
 Select 'File' from your main MT Menu
 Select 'Profile'
 Chose your profile name
A quicker way is to click on the profile box at the bottom of your chart ...

Hot Keys
You can assign hot keys to your programs for quick loading on to charts, without having to
navigate the navigator.  This is particularly useful for one-time use Scripts. For example, I use
ALT E to apply my object extender script to the chart (available from the Free Stuff web page) .
Just be careful that you don't reassign some of the MT4 shortcuts to your programs and lose
quick-access things like CTRL N to open the Navigator window, or CTRL O for Options.
