Interview with Mr Tarun Bhargava- Radiance Renewables

Q1. Who founded the organisation and who is currently heading it?
Ans: I work for a renewable energy company called Radiance Renewables.
It is owned by the Human Growth Energy Fund. It helps and invests in
companies that reduce the carbon footprint and help the earth and climate
as a whole. I work here as the Secretary Director of FInance.

Q2. Could you describe the workplace? Please tell us about the work
location, the working conditions and safety measures
Ans: Our business is to put up renewable energy plants and operate them.
Our plants at the moment mostly consist of solar parks where modules are
put that are connected to an inverter which is then connected to a
substation which then supplies energy to the grid. During this
implementation a very comprehensive checklist is made in terms of safety
standards and the climate impact. This is called the Environment Social
Governance. The fund has also adapted to global performance standards
like the IFC standard which includes regulations for setting up and
operating plants.

Q3. Which services are offered and what is produced in the organisation?
Ans: We produce energy through renewable sources, mostly solar energy.
We supply it to the distribution company and then the commercial and
industrial customers.

Q4. Who are the main customers of the organisation?

Ans: The main customers are commercial and industrial companies who
are into manufacturing, retail chains, textile companies and steel
companies.

Q5. Can you tell us about the ways the organisation attracts more
customers?Ans: We have a business development with a typical sales
process. They scout the market for large and potential customers and are in
need of renewable energy for various reasons. The global sector is moving
towards the reduction of emissions and the impact on the climate. The
sales team goes and speaks to the customers, with the help of
intermediaries or references we get sometimes.

Q6. How much does your product or service cost vs the competition?
Ans: Electricity is a commodity and no licence is required, but you need a
lot of approvals to set up and operate a power plant. These rules of the
Electricity Act govern us and there are a lot of regulatory agencies that
monitor and give approvals.

Q7. Is there a policy to make the organisation more sustainable? Which

concrete measures have been taken to make itself more environmentally
friendly?
Ans: The business we are in is to save the environment and make the
world greener. We reduce the use of fossil fuel. It is fundamentally
designed to be sustainable. We have several policies in place like any other
company related to governance. It starts with a framework on the
Environment and Social Management Systems policy. There are policies
on Environment Health and Safety. There are policies related to
governance like code of conduct, ethics, labour, sexual harassment and
insider trading. To implement these policies we have compliance officers
who are the custodians of these. These policies are explained to people
when they join or any contractors. Frequent trainings are conducted and
agreements are signed with everybody to follow the company’s policies.
Audits are conducted by different agencies to ensure the stipulated policies
are enforced. The senior management team also reviews this on a monthly
basis. Regular reports are sent depending on the level and function.
Committees of the board review the performance and the compliance of
these policies. All organisational processes look to incorporate various
aspects of environmental policies so people are accountable and used to
working in this way.

Interview with Dr.Vivek K, Director of Greenturn Energy Limited

Workplace and Organisation
Greenturn Energy Limited is a registered company in Bangalore.
This company works in the area of renewable energy and takes care of solar
photovoltaic systems or rooftop solar systems which generate electricity from
sunlight. This kind of energy sources are a promising source towards a sustainable
future.
This organisation is a small team of IITains who started this company almost 5 years
ago as a consultancy firm, where they gave design consultancy to large companies
who were interested in solar energy.
In their consultancy firm companies would ask questions like what types of panels
would be good for different climatic conditions, types of effects that might take place
in different environments and the methods of installation, etc. So depending on the
type of operation and the kind of operating environment they were able to help them
with the right technology and right practices for installation. After 2 years they
diverted their main force from consultancy to execution.

What services are offered by the organisation?

Currently they are mostly into power plant design, engineering installation and
commissioning. There are some cases where they offer operation and maintenance
service of solar power plants. They also continue design consultation. They approach
customers and give them a proposals about the viability of the project economics and
the technical viability and if whether the system fits for their needs.Another part to
their organisation is that they do power generation themselves i.e. they set up solar
power plants on any vacant land, which is unutilized, it can be any kind of barren land
which is not used for cultivation.

Who are the main customers? What are the ways through which you attract
more customers?
They operate mostly in the southern region like Bangalore, Mangalore, Tamil Nadu
and Kerala. They also have a few operations in Bombay. Some places from the Middle
East like UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and others would rather take only consultancy so
they also do just design.

Their main customers are in the Industrial and Commercial segment. For example,
educational institutions where they promote green energy research and projects as the
next generation themselves can come and see the new technology which is very
eco-friendly and sustainable. They have provided sustainable energy to many schools
and colleges in Bangalore itself.

They attract more customers through Word of Mouth as they themselves being a small
company cannot take up a lot of projects simultaneously so no large scale advertising
or marketing is done. They plan their workload according to the bandwidth, resources
and availability of people due to which they are only able to take up 2-3 big projects at
the same time.

What are the policies or concrete measures that have been taken by the
organisation to make itself more environmentally friendly?
Their main aim being to help the environment, the whole company is environmentally
friendly. They use renewable energy and have very less carbon footprint. No huge
amount of power is used except for the purpose of transportation. No paper waste is
produced as at this point everything is electronic. Wastage is to the minimum as they
make a precisely measured and calculated list of materials needed.

3) Do you think sustainable energy is the future in regards to your
profession?
Yes, I do that sustainable energy is the future as our world has limited resources
which might run out soon if we don't use it properly. Currently in airports the
amount of renewable energy used is very less and for name's sake but sooner or
later I believe that the airports will try to incorporate the use of more
sustainable methods for terminal operations such as passenger facilitation,
security checks, baggage screening,etc.

1) What do you like about this organisation?

Ans: Yes I liked the company because they are looking at sustainable sources
of energy. With the current climate condition, we need to shift the attention
from fossil fuel to renewable energy. A major hindrance in this might be the
ability to easily transport and provide this energy to people. . Unlike other
sources of energy, solar power is readily available at the local level. Company
is doing a good job of giving access to individuals to harness this energy and
add to the common cause of green energy.
2) Do you consider this organisation to be environmentally friendly? Why?
Ans: Yes I consider this company to be environmentally friendly as it reduces global
warming and promotes a greener way to use energy. It is important to shift the
attention from fossil fuels to readily available renewable sources like solar energy.
This company is giving access to individuals which promotes and supports the idea of
green energy.
3) Do you think sustainable energy is the future in regards to your
profession?
Ans: Yes, sustainability is the future. In schools, we use a lot of paper which uses a lot
of electricity and other raw materials. This can be reduced to e paper and documents.
Harnessing solar energy within the school premises can save a lot and after the
pandemic we all understand how teaching and learning is shifting towards online
resources. To progress while at the same time preserving nature it is important to teach
young minds the importance of solar power.
