WHITE NATIONALISM(S)

Imperio, Globalización y Diversidad en los Países de Habla Inglesa

Mariola Ruiz Rodríguez

WHITE NATIONALISM. WHAT IS IT?

• White nationalism is a type of nationalism that believes that whites are a race and seeks to develop
and maintain a white national and racial identity.
• Many of its proponents identify with the concept of a white nation, or a "white ethnostate“.
• White nationalists defend their seek to ensure the survival of the white race and the cultures of
historically white states.
• They argue that whites should maintain their majority in white-majority countries, maintain their
political and economic dominance, and that their cultures should come first.
WHITE NATIONALISM

• Many white nationalists believe that miscegenation, multiculturalism, non-white immigration, and low
birth rates among whites are threatening the white race, with some arguing that this will trigger a
white genocide.
• Most white nationalist groups promote racial violence.
• White nationalists adopt a variety of religious and non-religious beliefs, including various Christian
denominations, generally Protestant, though some specifically overlap with white nationalist ideology.
• Confederate Flag: At first this was the ensign of the confederate states of America, disappeared after
the Civil War. Today, for a part of the whites of the southern United States, this flag represents their
historical and regional heritage, and they use it to represent their claims.
WHITE SUPREMACY

• White nationalism is considered as a synonym of white supremacy, although this is actually a

subgroup within white nationalism.
• White supremacy’s belief is based on the fact that whites are a superior race and that is why they
should dominate society. Its members demand political privileges for white people in multi-ethnic
communities.
• Within the white supremacists we find the neo-Nazis, whose movement takes up the ideology of
the old German Nazism, as well as the Ku Klux Klan, a conservative and racist group founded in
1865 that calls for a return to the segregation of the 1950s.
WHITE SEPARATISM

• Within white nationalism there is another group, white separatism, which calls for the creation of
politically separate white communities.
• Unlike the supremacists, the separatists consider that the regions should be divided by ethnic groups
and races.
• They seek to separate economic and cultural development for the white population.
• An example of a separatist white community is the Northwest Front, in the US states of
Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and Alberta and British Columbia in Canada.
