INTERVIEWS WITH STUDENTS

TO GET AN INSIGHT ABOUT THEIR OPINIONS ON THIS MATTER. THE STUDENTS


INTERVIEWED WERE OF VARIOUS AGES AND THIS ALLOWED US TO HAVE A
BROAD RANGE OF OPINIONS. THE STUDENTS WERE HRIDAY (14), VAIDEHI (15),
ARYAMAN (12), REWA (14), HARSHALL (13), ANAYA (12), SWASTI (15), ANNIKA (13),
ANANYA (16) AND ANAHITA (16).

DESCRIPTION OF PREPARATION FOR THE INTERVIEW-

● THE INTERVIEW ALLOWED US TO GATHER INFORMATION FROM A MORE


BROADER RANGE.
● WE ENSURED THAT THE PEOPLE WE WERE INTERVIEWING WERE WELL
AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THEY WERE BEING RECORDED OR THAT WE
WERE TAKING PICTURES DURING THE INTERVIEW, IF REQUIRED. WE TOLD
THEM ABOUT THIS PRIOR TO THE INTERVIEW AND ONLY DID SO IF THEY
HAD GIVEN CONSENT FOR BEING RECORDED.
● EACH OF OUR MEMBERS TOOK UP TO INTERVIEW 2 STUDENTS EACH AND
EVERY MEMBER DID IT IN DIFFERENT PLACES AND TIME FOR THE
CONVENIENCE OF THE INTERVIEWEE. EACH INTERVIEW TOOK AROUND 5-6
MINS.
● WE EXPRESSED OUR GRATITUDE TOWARDS OUR INTERVIEWEES FOR BEING
SO OPEN AND HELPING US GET MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES OF PEOPLE FROM
DIFFERENT POSITIONS AND AGES ON PLASTIC RECYCLING. WE EXTENDED
OUR THANKS NOT ONLY TO THE PEOPLE AT THOSE VARIOUS POSITIONS
BUT ALSO TO THE ORGANIZATION THEY WERE PART OF, AS THEY ALL HAVE
A BIG ROLE TO PLAY IN THIS RESEARCH.

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS SUMMARISED WHAT WE GOT


FROM THEM.

1. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEMS REGARDING THE DISPOSAL


OF PLASTIC?
-ALL THE STUDENTS WERE SOMEWHAT AWARE OF HOW PLASTIC IS
FREQUENTLY AND INCORRECTLY MANAGED WHICH CONSEQUENTLY
RESULTS IN THE ACCUMULATION OF WASTE. THERE WAS A CORRELATION
OF ANSWERS AS ANANYA, AN 11TH GRADER MENTIONED THAT SOME
PEOPLE LITTER WASTE IN PUBLIC PLACES AND ANAHITA, ANOTHER 11TH
GRADER SAID THAT PEOPLE DO NOT USUALLY FOLLOW THE 3RS EITHER.
MOST OF THE 9TH AND 10TH GRADERS WERE PARTICULARLY AWARE OF THE
DAMAGE THIS WIDE LITTER OF PLASTIC CAUSED TO THE WATER BODIES.
THEY MENTIONED THE TRAGIC EFFECTS INGESTING PLASTIC HAS ON
MARINE LIFE AND HOW A COLLECTION OF PLASTIC IN WATER CAN CAUSE
BLOCKAGES. A FEW STUDENTS ALSO BROUGHT UP THE EMISSION OF
GREENHOUSE GASSES AND SOIL INFERTILITY CAUSED DUE TO THIS
SITUATION.

2. DO YOU USE/THROW AWAY ANY PLASTIC FOR FOOD AND DRINKS AT


SCHOOL?
-HERE, SOME OF THE STUDENT’S OPINIONS DIFFERED VASTLY AS SOME,
LIKE STUDENT HRIDAY SAID THAT THROWING AWAY PLASTIC WHEN IT
CAME TO FOOD AND DRINKS IN HIS SCHOOL WAS QUITE RARE
CONSIDERING MOST STUDENTS BRING HOME-PACKED LUNCHES, WHEREAS
SOME OTHERS LIKE OUR SECOND STUDENT, VAIDEHI SAID THAT PLASTIC
WAS THROWN AWAY A LOT AT HER SCHOOL DURING BREAK TIMES.
THEREFORE WE CAN CONCLUDE THAT THERE IS AN UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION
OF WASTE IN DIFFERENT CLASSES. ONE MORE POINT TO BE NOTED IS
THAT ALMOST EVERYONE AGREED THAT PLASTIC WASTE WAS DISPOSED
OF IN THE SCHOOL WASTE BINS.

3. DO YOU IMPLEMENT ANY OF THE SCHOOL MEASURES FOR THE RECYCLING
OF PLASTIC AT A PERSONAL LEVEL (E.G. ALSO WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME)?
-MOST OF THE INTERVIEWEES FOLLOW A RULE TO SEGREGATE THE WASTE,
THAT IS DRY WASTE AND WET WASTE AND THE THIRD ONE IS FOR
PLASTIC BOTTLES, ETC. SO THEY SEGREGATE THEIR WASTE INTO 3
SECTIONS WHICH HELP IN PLASTIC BEING REUSED, REDUCED, AND
RECYCLED. MOST OF THEM LIVE IN SOCIETIES ALIGNED WITH NGOS THAT
HOLD MONTHLY DONATION DRIVES FOR PLASTIC AND SOME SAID THEY
EVEN GOT A CERTIFICATE FOR THIS.
