to learn that levels of salt, sugar and fat in school lunches have fallen in the last five years. However, I agree
5
that there is more we can do.

We conducted a survey of students’ lunches in our school, and found that most lunches did not contain enough

fibre. In 70% of lunches, the fibre was less than the recommended intake. Insufficient fibre can cause weight

gain and constipation. We also found that most lunches contained too much protein, because they had too
10
much meat and not enough vegetables. Excessive levels of protein can cause problems for the liver and

kidneys.

I hope this information is useful.

Yours faithfully,

Jennifer Lee

DIFFICULT SECTION

Task 8: Email (19 marks)

Write an email to Mrs Chan in response to her concerns about food waste at the school canteen using information from
the B2 Data File and your notes. Write around 160 words.

Dear Mrs Chan,

Thank you for your email about lunches at the school. We agree that the problem of food waste is important

and needs to be addressed.

5

We recently conducted a survey of school lunches, and found that 68% of students eat lunches cooked in

the school canteen, while 32% of students bring their own packed lunch. Students say they don’t have time

to make a packed lunch. The school canteen produces approximately 480 lunches per day. The food waste

from the canteen comes to 60 kg per day. The amount of food waste from students who bring packed
10
lunches is much lower, at around 10 kg per day. The food waste includes uneaten and leftover food, and

disposable cutlery.

In the next few weeks, the school will be launching a project to cut down on food waste. We will contact you

again to explain more about this.

Thank you again for your input.

Task 9: Article (13 marks)
Write an article for the school magazine about how to cut food waste in the school using information from the
B2 Data File and your notes. Write around 100 words.

Cutting food waste in the school

Did you know our school wastes a lot of food? Our survey found that students leave one quarter of their

school meals. We should consider reducing the portion size of lunches that we serve at the canteen.
5

Also, we should consider introducing some new and interesting dishes, and stop serving unpopular dishes.

This will encourage students to eat all of their lunches.

We should also stop using disposable cutlery and chopsticks in the school canteen. Instead, we should provide
10
students with reusable cutlery and chopsticks. This might involve buying an industrial dishwasher for the

Task 10: Article (18 marks)
Write an article for the club newsletter using information from the B2 Data File. Write around 120 words.

Revolution in the school canteen

It’s midday at Tai Hang Private School and a queue is forming outside Rejuvenation Cafe, the school canteen.

More than 600 students eat here every day: that’s over 95% of the school population. Step inside and it’s
5
clear why the canteen is so popular. Its trendy decor makes it look more like a boutique hotel, with stripped

wooden floors and cool lighting. The menu is packed with fashionable, healthy choices: kale smoothies, shrimp

and avocado salad as well as gluten-free brownies. They also offer food choices free from dairy or allergens.

Jessie Ng, a Secondary 5 student at the school, raised funds and worked with a nutritionist to design their

healthy and tasty menu. Based on the queue snaking out of the canteen, her efforts clearly pay off.
