Let’s Understand

Speech Act Theory was first proposed by John Langshaw Austin in 1962
and later developed by John-Roger Searle in 1969. According to them, language
conveys not only information but also carry out actions. This theory focuses on the
speaker’s intention with his/her utterances. Thus, it regards language as an action to
be performed instead as a medium of conveying ideas.
The speech act is the action of the utterances. Words do not only convey ideas or
information, but it intends to have the action be performed. When the speaker utters
words, he/she is expressing his/her intention. However, this intention has the tendency to
be misunderstood or not understood at all. The communicators need to know the different
types of speech acts to ensure the success of communication.

THREE TYPES OF SPEECH ACTS

1. Locutionary Acts (Utterance)- actual words of the speaker
2. Illocutionary Acts (Meaning/Intention) – the purpose/intention of the speaker’s
words.
3. Perlocutionary Acts (Effect/Response)- effect of illocutionary in the situation to
the listener/hearer
