Homework No.3 - RC I - CEE 351 - Fall 2022

This document outlines homework assignment 3 for the course CEE 351 - Reinforced Concrete I. It includes 4 exercises analyzing rectangular and flanged reinforced concrete cross sections under bending and calculating ultimate moments and reinforcement areas. Students are asked to determine forces in concrete and steel, and draw corresponding strain and stress diagrams, showing the neutral axis depth, concrete stress block, and steel reinforcement strain. Solutions require the use of reinforced concrete design equations and principles.

Exercises – Rectangular Section in Bending with Compression

Reinforcement at the Ultimate Limit State Design

1. The section shown in Figure 1 of a reinforced concrete member is to resist

an ultimate design moment of 200kNm. If fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=25 N/mm2,
b=250mm and d=400mm,
a) determine the areas of reinforcement, As and As’, if d’ = 50mm.
b) determine the areas of reinforcement, As and As’, if d’ = 75mm.

Figure 1. Rectangular cross section of reinforced concrete member.

2. If for the section in Figure 1, fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=25 N/mm2, b = 260mm,

d=500mm, d’=50mm, As=2000mm2 and As’=500 mm2, determine:
a) the forces developed in concrete and steel, i.e.,
i. Compressive force, Fcc, developed in concrete.
ii. Compressive force, Fsc, developed in the reinforcement As’.
iii. Tensile force, Fs, developed in reinforcement As.
b) the ultimate design moment.

Important Note: For all cases in Exercises 1 and 2 provide schematic

representations of the corresponding strain [ε] and stress [σ] diagrams,
showing:
i) The maximum compressive strain in concrete.
ii) The depth of the Neutral Axis.
iii) The stresses in concrete assuming equivalent rectangular stress block
in compression.
iv) The strain developed in the steel reinforcement.

Exercises – Flanged Section in Bending at the Ultimate Limit State

Design

3. For the flanged section in Figure 2 of a reinforced concrete member

fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=25 N/mm2, bw=250mm, d=400mm, and As=1500mm2,
determine the ultimate design moment if:
a) bf=550mm, and hf=150mm.
b) bf=350mm, and hf=100mm.

4. The flanged section shown in Figure 2 of a reinforced concrete member is

to resist an ultimate design moment of 200kNm. If fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=25
N/mm2, bf=350mm, hf=100mm, d=400mm, and bw=200mm, calculate the
area of reinforcement, As, required.

Important Note: For all cases in Exercises 3 and 4 provide schematic

representations of the corresponding strain [ε] and stress [σ] diagrams,
showing:
i) The maximum compressive strain in concrete.
ii) The depth of the Neutral Axis.
iii) The stresses in concrete assuming equivalent rectangular stress block
in compression.
iv) The strain developed in the steel reinforcement.
