GEC3 Assignment 5 PDF

This document contains an assignment with multiple questions on probability and statistics concepts like the normal distribution and linear regression. For each question, the student provided calculations and answers. The questions involve finding probabilities for normal random variables, determining the percentage of students below a GPA, calculating the mean and standard deviation from given probabilities, finding the probability of an event occurring after a given number of days, and analyzing the relationship between distance and fuel usage through scatter plots, correlation, regression lines, and variability.

Assignment 5: Chapter Assessment

A. Assume z is a normal random variable with mean 0 and

standard deviation 1.
1. Find P(-1.01<z<0)

2. Find P(z<0)
A=0.5

3. Find P(0.66<z<1.22)
A=0.2454 + 0.3888
=0.6342

B. Assume that GPA of college students in Luzon is

approximately normally distributed. The average GPA is
2.455 with a standard deviation of 0.66. Find the
percentage of students who obtained GPA below 1.25.
X = 1.25
µ = 2.445
σ = 0.66
z = (x-µ) / σ
z=1.25-2.455/0.66 A=0.5-0.4664
z=1.83 A=0.0336

C. Suppose a random variable is normally distributed. The
probabilities for 85 are 142 are 10% and 65%, respectively.
Find the mean standard deviation to the nearest whole
number.
x1 = 85
x2 = 142
P (x > 85) = 10% P (x > 142) = 65%
P (z > a) = 10% P (z > b) = 65%
a = 1.28 b = -0.39
P (z > 1.28) = 10% P (z > -0.39) = 65%
z = (x-µ) / σ z = (x-µ) / σ
1.28 = (85 - µ) / σ -0.39 = (142 - µ) / σ
µ + 1.28σ = 85 µ -0.39σ = 142
FINAL ANSWER - µ = 128.69 σ = -34.13

D. Snakes shed their skin to enable growth. If the time it

takes for a snake to shed its skin is normally distributed
with mean of 8 days and standard deviation of 2 days, what
is the probability that a snake will shed its skin after 7
days.
z = (x-µ) / σ
= (7– 8) / 2 = -0.5
P (-0.5 < z < 0) = 0.1915 or 19.15%

E. A car was driven 6 times to measure the distance and the

amount of fuel used. The results are as follows:
1 2 3 4 5 6
Distance (km) 20 25 30 35 28 40
Amount of fuel used 2.14 2.75 2.65 3 2.80 2.479
(L)

2. Is there a linear relationship between distance and the

amount of fuel used? If so, how would you describe the
relationship?
[𝐧∑𝐱𝐲−∑𝐱∑𝐲]
r=
√(𝐧∑𝒙𝟐 −(∑𝐱)𝟐 )(𝐧∑𝐲𝟐−(∑𝐲)𝟐 )
6(473.61)−178(158.819)
𝑟=
√[6(5,534)−(178)2 ][6(42.150041)−(15.819)2 ]

25.878
𝑟=
√(1,520)(2.659485)
25.878
𝑟=
63.58
𝒓 = 𝟎. 𝟒𝟏
Yes, it has a linear relationship, a strong positive
correlation since, 0.41 is close to +1.

3. What percentage of the variability in the amount of fuel used

can be explain by the variability in the distance?

𝑟 = 0.41
𝑟 2 = (0.41)2
𝑟 2 = 0.1681(100)

𝑟 2 = 16.81%
Therefore, the variability percentage of the amount fuel to the
distance is 16.81%

4. Determine the regression line for distance and amount of

fuel used.
