Chapter 1

Introduction
1.1 An overview

The hospital Management system includes registration of patients, sorting their details into the system, and
also computerized billing. The software has the facility to give a search facility for every patients and the
staff automatically. It include the search facility to know the current status of each room. User can search
about the doctor whether they are available or not and the details of a patient. The hospital management
system can be entered using a username and password. It is accessible either by an administrator or
receptionist. Only they can add data into the database. The data can be retrieved easily. The interface is very
user friendly. The data is well protected for personal use and fast data processing.

Hospital Management System is designed for multispecialty hospitals, to cover a wide range of hospital
administration processes. Hospital Management System is a useful to improve the management of hospital in
the area of clinical process analysis and activity-based costing. Hospital Management System enables you to
develop your organization and improve effectiveness and quality of work. The Application maintains
authentication in order to access the application. Administrator task includes managing doctors information,
patient’s information. To achieve this aim a database was designed one for the patient and other for the
doctors which the admin can access. The complaints which are given by user will be referred by authorities.

The user module can be accessed by both the doctors and the patients. The doctor can confirm and/or cancel
appointments. The doctors can even add prescriptions for their patients using our application. The patients
will be able to apply for the appointment and make transaction for the same, and can even cancel
appointments with the doctors. They can track details about the previous transactions made by them. The
software will also help the admin to monitor the transactions made by the patients and generate
confirmations for the same. The admin will be able to manage and update information about doctors.

1.2 Motivation

The real motivation for the hospital management system project is to make easy process of all the
management process like patient registration, billing, doctors appointment, doctor prescription, etc. We
always see that to find out the patient’s history, the user has to go through various registers. This results in
wastage of time. So by this system it will become easy to manage all process. So now by taking the
motivation of this scenario which was regularly done in hospitals we are designing this system which can be
benefited for the patients and hospital staff. So, we'd like to possess this system which help hospital to do
work fast and effective. Hospital Management System is a system enabling hospitals to manage
information and data related to all aspects of healthcare – processes, providers, patients, and
more, which in turn ensures that processes are completed swiftly and effectively.

1.3 Problem Definition

In this busy world we don’t have the time to wait in infamously long hospital queues. The problem
is, queuing at hospital is often managed manually by administrative staff, then take a token there and then
wait for our turn then ask for the doctor and the most frustrating thing - we went there by traveling a long
distance and then we come to know the doctor is on leave or the doctor can’t take appointments. HMS will
help us overcome all these problems because now patients can book their appointments at home, they can
check whether the doctor they want to meet is available or not.

Doctors can also confirm or decline appointments, this help both patient and the doctor because if the doctor
declines’ appointment then patient will know this in advance and patient will visit hospital only when the
doctor confirms’ the appointment this will save time and money of the patient. Patients can also pay the
doctor’s consultant fee online to save their time. HMS is essential for all healthcare establishments, be it
hospitals, nursing homes, health clinics, rehabilitation centers, dispensaries, or clinics. The main goal is to
computerize all the details regarding the patient and the hospital. The installation of this healthcare software
results in improvement in administrative functions and hence better patient care, which is the prime focus of
any healthcare unit

1.4 Aim

 To promote awareness of health care among all sections of the Indian people.
 To promote awareness among functionaries involved in Health and Hospital Management.

System Architecture

2.1 Introduction

Three Tiers

Three-tier architecture is an architectural deployment style that describe the separation of functionality
into layers with each segment being a tier that can be located on a physically separate computer. They evolved
through the component-oriented approach, generally using platform specific methods for communication
instead of a message-based approach.

The 3-Tier architecture has the following tiers :

Presentation Tier
This is the topmost level of the application. The presentation tier displays information
related to such services as browsing merchandise, purchasing, and shopping cart contents. It
communicates with other tiers by outputting results to the browser/client tier and all other tiers in
the network.

Application Tier (Business Logic/Logic Tier)

In the logic Tier the application’s functionality is done by performing detailed processing of
data from presentation layer. Server such as Apache (or IIS) or Server Script (such as PHP) can be
used to support this. With Server (Apache or IIS) the appropriate action to be taken is identified, such
as fetching a file, or passing request to an interpreter. Also it sends an output back to caller in MIME
package. As such support for thousands for concurrent users, multithreading (allow multiple
4
processor to run concurrently) and holding results in a temporary store to reduce recalculation is
achieved.

2.2 Requirement Analysis

Requirement’s analysis, also called requirements engineering, is the process of determining user
expectations for a new or modified product. These features, called requirements, must be
quantifiable, relevant and detailed. In software engineering, such requirements are often called
functional specifications. Requirement’s analysis is an important aspect of project management.

Hardware Requirements

 Windows 7 or latest version

 2 GB RAM
 Pentium 4+ Processor
 256 MB free Hard Disk
 Wi-Fi Router

Software Requirements
 Workbench
 Netbeans
 JDK 8

Functional Requirements
 Login
 Consumers

Non-functional Requirements
 Security
 Performance

Conclusion and Future Scope

Conclusion

Hospital management system is all about the modernizing a hospital through use of technology. Computers
helps in it and take over the manual system for quick and easy functioning. This hospital management
system is a quite the reliable and is proven on many stages. All the basic requirements of the hospital are
provided in the hospital in order to manage it perfectly and large amount of data can also be stored. It gives
many facilities like searching for the detail of patient, billing facilities as well as the creation of test reports.
So it is an important system for modern days.

22
Future Scope

The proposed system is Hospital Management System. We can enhance this system by including more
facilities like pharmacy system for the stock details of medicines in the pharmacy. Providing such features
enable the users to include more comments into the system.
Most hospitals today are monolithic facilities made up of multiple buildings and floors where
patients are admitted, treated, and monitored until they are well enough to go home. Going
forward, nonemergency services will be pushed horizontally to outpatient clinics, patients' homes, and
remote devices. The application starts by asking for user name and password which provides
authentication. This system provides high security where the unauthorized users cannot access the
data.
