PARTS OF A COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

PARTS FUNCTION
A. Mechanical Parts
It provides support and adjustments.
Base  It is the bottommost portion that
supports the entire or lower microscope.
Pillar  It is a vertical projection. This stands by
resting on the base and supports the
stage.
Inclination Joint  It allows for tilting of the microscope for
convenience of the user.
Arm/Neck  The entire microscope is handled by a
strong and curved structure known as
the arm.
Stage  It is a platform where object is to be
examined.
Stage Clips  It secures the specimen to the stage.
 It holds the slide in place.
Body Tube  It is attached to the arm and bears the
lenses.
Draw Tube  It is a cylindrical structure on the top of
the body tube that holds the ocular
lenses.
Revolving/ Rotating Nosepiece  The nose piece is circular and a rotating
metal part that is connected to the body
tube’s lower end. The nose piece has
three holes wherein the objective lenses
are embedded.
Dust Shield  It lies on the top of the nosepiece and
keeps dust from settling on the
objectives.
Coarse Adjustment  It is a large knob that is used for moving
the body tube down and up for bringing
the object to be examined under exact
focus.
Fine Adjustment Knob  It is a smaller knob for delicate focusing
bringing the object into a perfect focus.
Diaphragm  It controls the amount of light that
passes through the specimen.
Condenser  It is used to collect and focus the light
from the illuminator on to the specimen.
B. Magnifying Parts
It enlarges the specimen.
Eyepiece or Ocular lens  It magnifies the image.
Objectives/ Objective Lenses  It is a metal cylinders attached below
the nosepiece and contains specially
ground and polished lenses
C. Illuminating Parts
It provides light.
Mirror  It is located beneath the stage and has
concave and plane surfaces to gather
and direct light to illuminate the object.
Electric Lamp  It is a built- in illuminator beneath the
stage that may be used if sunlight is not
preferred or is not available.
