They are intended primarily for concentration measurements in food products and the readings are displayed in “Brix (% sucrose) though they also have applications in many other industries. Other reading scales are available see page 3-2. The instruments are housed in rigid polyurethane foam moulded cases which are light in weight whilst being extremely rugged and have a high resistance to chemical attack from the majority of commonly used samples. As they are sealed against ingress of dust and water, they are easily cleaned with water or other solvents. : Prism plate: 316 Artificial sapphire Stainless oteel with silicone rubber ‘gaoket oasled with solid setting resin putty providing an easy clean ample ‘application arca Hauling: Low density expanded polyurethane foam. This can also occur when measuring certain samples that are difficult for the instrument to measure, gas bubbles are present on the prism surface or the contact between the sample and the prism surface is poor. The displayed value may be correct but should be used with caution. Try cleaning the prism thoroughly and re-applying the sample. The instrument should be calibrated at regular intervals eg. at least daily, using distilled water. The calibration procedure is easy and straightforward and only takes a few seconds. Calibration should also be carried out if the instrument temperature changes by more than +5°C since the last calibration. Eg. If the instrument was calibrated early in the morning and the temperature display showed 16°C but at midday the temperature displayed 24°C, then a calibration should be carried out. Check the calibration condition reguarly, maybe before every sample application, by applying distiled water and taking a reading. Ifthe displayed value is not 0.0 then calibrate. Calibration procedure Apply distilled water and allow to stabilise before commencing the calibration routine. Take repeated readings until the displayed value is stable. Press and hold the Calibrate Key (for approximately 2 seconds), until the display shows as below Doo CALPe Pressing the calibrate key again will start the calibrate routine. If you decide that you do not want to calibrate, just press one of the other three keys. While the instrument is calibrating you will see. CALG When the calibration procedure is completed satisfactorily, the display will show: nn uu Page 2-8 Setting up the system Sampling techniques In order to achieve the maximum performance from the RFM700 Series refractometer, it is essential that extreme care is taken when cleaning the t instrument and applying sample to the prism. Sample concentration may vary ‘considerably from the surface to the centre of a mass whether in a beaker or on @ spoon or spatula. Both evaporation and temperature stabilisation can cause ‘remarkably rapid drifting unless care is taken. Cleaning ‘Always clean the prism surface immediately after taking readings. Sample that has remained on the prism for long periods can be difficult to remove and small particles of dried matter can subsequently dissolve into later samples. Use clean tissue with water to remove old sample then dry with fresh clean tissue. Wiping the prism surface occasionally with ethyl alcohol will remove any residue of oils left from the samples. NEVER use acetone, white spirit, or other aggressive solvents or any abrasive fluids on any painted surface or particularly, the membrane keypad panel. ¢ Sample application ‘Always take sample from the centre of a container and not from the surface where physical separation can cause higher or lower concentrations. Keep the time taken to transport the sample from the container to the prism to an absolute minimum to limit evaporation. With low viscosity liquids, use a g disposable pipette once only. With high viscosity samples, scoop out { AN sufficient with a clean, dry spatula. NEVER pour a sample directly from a container onto the prism. Use of temperature compensation ‘The compensation modes corrects readings from the refractometer back to 20°C. That is, it allows the refractometer to run at ambient temperature but produces readings as if the system was running at 20°C. Temperature compensation will only be valid if the detected sample ‘temperature is stable and so sufficient time should be allowed for the sample to stabilise. Sugar temperature compensation ‘The sugar (sc) temperature compensation available within the RFM700 refractometers is that required for water and sucrose solutions. It conforms to the published ICUMSA 1978 correction table which covers the ranges 10 to 40°C and 0 to 80° Brix and has been extended to cover § to 10°C by Using additional data. Although the correction is specifically applicable to Pure sucrose solutions, itis also valid for many sugar based food products. However. it must be stressed that the correction values may be unsuitable for other, non-sugar bosed, products and great core should be exercised if the instrument is used with these samples at temperatures other than 20°C. Instrument description A hve 2013 Page 2-9 AG fluid temperature compensation The AG fluid (ae) temperature compensation installed in the RFM700 refractometers Is that required for AG fluids to compensate to 20°C. [AG Fluids are an organic solution calibrated in “Brix and RI, and have a long shel life. They have no special storage or transit requirements and are therefore easy to ship and store. AG Fluids are available from Bellingham + Stanley, see Spares and Accessories for order codes.
