(Zinc Acetate) Systematic Analysis of Simple Salt No 8

The document analyzes a simple salt through a series of tests. Key findings are: 1) The salt is white with a specific odor, indicating the presence of CH3COO-. 2) Tests for acid radicals confirm the presence of CH3COO-. 3) Tests identify the presence of Zn2+ ions as the basic radical. 4) The overall analysis identifies the salt as zinc acetate.

SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF SIMPLE SALT (SALT NO.

8)
PRELIMINARY TEST

1)PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

a) Note the colour of the salt white Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ absent
b) Note the odour of the salt specific odour NH4+, and CH3COO- may be
present

2)DRY HEATING TEST

Heat a pinch of salt in a dry test tube

and note the following observation
a)Gas evolved No gas evolved NH4+ may be absent

b) sublimation No sublimate formed Aluminium chloride , iodide may

be absent

c) Descrepitation No cracking sound observed Lead nitrate , barium nitrate ,

potassium chloride , potassium
iodide may be absent

d) colour of the residue No colour of the residue Zn 2+, Pb2+ , Cd2+ may be absent

3)FLAME TEST
Prepared a paste of the salt with No characteristic flame Cu2+, Ba2+ , Sr2+ , Ca2+ may be
conc. HCl and performed the flame absent
test

4)COBALT NITRATE TEST

To the salt solution added a few drops No characteristic ash Zn 2+,Al 3+, Mg 2+ may be absent
of cobalt nitrate solution , dipped
filter paper in it and introduced it in a
luminous flame

5)DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID TEST

Treated a pinch of the salt with No gas evolved CO32- , S2- absent
dil. H2SO4 and warmed

6)CONCENTRATED SULPHURIC ACID

TEST
Treated a pinch of the salt with
conc. H2SO4 and warmed Colorless vapors with smell (CH3COO-) may be present
of vinegar. Vapours turn
blue litmus red.
7)KMnO4 TEST
To a pinch of salt added dil H2SO4 and No decolourisation Cl- , Br-, I- , Fe2+ are absent
then add a drop of KMnO4 solution

8)COPPER CHIPS TEST

Heated a pinch of salt with conc.
H2SO4 and a few copper chips No reddish brown gas NO3- absent

9)MnO2 TEST
Heat a pinch of solid salt with MnO2 No greenish yellow gas Cl- absent
And conc. H2SO4 evolved which bleaches
moist blue litmus paper

10)BaCl2 TEST
Boil small amount of a salt with dil. No ppt is formed SO4– absent
HCl in a test tube. Filter the contents
and to the filtrate added few drops of
BaCl2 solution.

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACID RADICAL

OXALIC ACID TEST :

Mixed a small quantity of the salt Vinegar smell CH3COO- confirmed
with solid oxalic acid. prepared paste
of it with a few drops of water,
rubbed the paste between the fingers
and smelled

IDENTIFICATION OF BASIC RADICAL

11)SODIUM HYDROXIDE (NaOH)TEST

Heat a pinch of solid salt with No gas evolved NH4+ absent
NaOH solution.

PREPARATION OF ORIGINAL SALT

SOLUTION :

Prepare original salt solution by

dissolving a pinch of salt in 10-15ml of
distilled water.
GROUP SEPERATION

a) To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group zero present (NH4+)
added 1ml of nessler’s reagent and
excess of NaOH solution .

b)To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group I absent

added 2ml of dil. HCl (Pb2+)

c) To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group II absent

added 2ml of dil. HCl and then (Cu2+)
passed H 2S gas .

d) To a few drops of original solution No precipitate formed Group III absent

added 1ml of NH4Cl and 2 ml of (Fe3+ , Al 3+) absent
NH4OH

e) To a few drops of original solution Dull white precipitate formed Group IV present
added 1ml of NH4Cl and 2 ml of (Zn2+ present)
NH4OH and then passed H 2S gas.

CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR BASIC RADICAL

Dissolved above dull white ppt in
Dil.HCl ,boiled H 2S gas and divide the
solution into 2 parts
a)To one part added NaOH solution white precipitate formed Zn2+ confirmed

b)To another part added potassium Bluish white precipitate Zn2+ confirmed
ferrocyanide solution formed

RESULT :

-
ACID RADICAL : CH3COO

2+
BASIC RADICAL: Zn
