STC Oil Control Valve (Mechanical) - 5

The document provides instructions for testing and calibrating a STC oil control valve on a diesel engine. It describes disconnecting the fuel return line and plugging holes to perform a fuel return test to identify leaks. It also details how to record the part number and initial shift point values of the valve, adjust the valve's screw to raise or lower the upper shift point within specifications, and repeat testing until properly calibrated. If values cannot be calibrated, the valve must be repaired or replaced.

Fuel Return

Disconnect the fuel return hose from the STC oil control valve
(1).

Remove the fuel return elbow from the STC oil control valve
and plug the hole with a 3/8-24 UNF plug.

Disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel block (1).

Remove the nipple from the fuel block and plug the hole with a
1/8 NPTF plug.

Operate the engine under normal operating conditions. Shut

down the engine. If the engine does not shut down in the
recommended time span, replace the STC fuel return elbow.
Install the hoses and repeat the test. If the engine continues to
run-on after changing the elbow, change the STC oil control
valve and repeat the test.

Fuel Return with Dual STC

If the engine is fitted with dual STC, perform the Fuel Return
Test on each bank individually to determine which bank leaks.

For right bank inspection, disconnect the fuel return line at the
location indicated (1). Remove the nipple and plug the hole.

The right bank fuel return line is situated in the same location
on the STC oil control valve as on the left bank STC oil control
valve.

Calibrate
Record the part number of the STC oil control valve from the
dataplate on the valve.

Record the upper and lower shift point values for the STC oil
control valve.

Use the calibration table in STC Oil Control Valve (Mechanical)

- General Information.

Remove the tamper proof wire from the acorn nut at the rear of
the STC oil control valve.

Remove the acorn nut from the STC oil control valve adjusting
screw.

Loosen the locknut on the STC oil control valve adjusting

screw.

Use an Allen wrench to turn the STC valve adjusting screw.

Turn the screw in a clockwise direction to raise the STC oil
control valve upper shift-point. Turn the screw in a
counterclockwise direction to lower the upper shift-point.

Note : Always start the air pressure at 0 kPa [ 0 psi ]

before checking the upper shift point (A). Always raise
the air pressure to at least 103 kPa [ 15 psi ] above the
upper shift-point (A) before checking the lower shift-
point (B).
After adjusting the screw, repeat the STC shift-point test
procedure.

Repeat the calibration and test procedure until the shift-points

are within the set values as per the calibration table in the
General Information section.

If the value can not be calibrated to these specifications, repair

or replace the STC oil control valve.
