Instructional Sheet 4

The document describes a frequency distribution of ages from a sample of 40 diabetics. It provides the raw data of the ages and shows the steps to construct a frequency distribution table with classes ranging from 10 to 86 in intervals of 11. It then calculates the mean, median, and mode from the frequency distribution. The mean age is 52.4, the median age is 52.12, and the mode age is 51.3.

FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION

Problem: A researcher conducted a study on the ages of persons with diabetes. The following data were
obtained for the ages of a sample of 40 diabetics. Construct a frequency distribution for this data.

48 41 57 83 41 55 56 64 45 53

61 38 48 79 75 77 48 10 60 83

54 23 47 56 79 68 36 26 32 48

76 21 65 82 68 38 18 28 37 44

Solve for the following:

1. Mean
2. Median
3. Mode

STEP 1: FIND THE RANGE: R=Highest score- lowest score, where highest score= 83, lowest score = 10
R 83-10 = 73
STEP 2: FIND THE # OF CLASSES: K= 1+3.322 log (N), where is the sum of frequency
K 1+3.322 log (40) = 6.322=7
STEP 3: FIND THE CLASS INTERVAL : I =R/# of classes,
I =73/7 = 10.4 or 11

MIDPOINT (FREQUENCY) CLASS commulative

SOLVE FOR MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE:

Where: fx=2096
F = 40
MEAN=∑ ❑(fx)/ ∑ ❑ f
2096/40 = 52.4

MEDIAN:
Lub +(∑ f /2 – cf/fm)c where: lub = 42.5
∑ f /2 =40/2= 20
= 42.5+ (20 – 13/8) 11 cf = 13
= 42.5 + (7/8)11 fm = 8
= 42.5 + 9.625 c = 11
= 52.12

MODE:
Lm + (d1/d1 + d2) c
Where: Lm= 42.5
= 42.5 + (4/4+1) 11 d1 = 8- 4 = 4
= 42.5 + (4/5)11 d2 = 8 -7= 1
= 42.5 + 8.8 c = 11
= 51.3
