Matching Problematic Learning Situation with Probable Action

Revisit the infographic/s

A group of more than six hundred teachers was surveyed and asked what
teaching learning problems confront them. Here are their answers put together in a
wordle.

Study the wordle below. Each word represents an issue or a problem which was
reported by teachers in the field. Which of the words do you recognize as a problem?
Draw a CIRCLE around five words that you have also identified as problems in
teaching-learning.
Each of the identified problem that you encircled has a corresponding action or
solution.

Identified Problems Action as Solution

Participate and Assist

What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled?
Make a statement. Write in the space below.

The problems I identified are:

1. COVID

Because of their fear of contracting the virus, students with COVID have had a
significant impact on their education. As a result, they are unable to take the risk of
contracting the virus by attending school, and in order for them to continue their
education, they will need to adjust to a new normal in which their learning methods
are online learning and modular.

2. MODULES

One of the things that teaches students to be lazy in their studies and reliant on their
parents and the media is that a lot of them have a hard time answering the modules.

3. POVERTY

Poverty develops as a result of inflation, causing students to be financially unstable

and preventing them from attending school and studying.

4. COMPREHENSION

Many students struggle with comprehension, and this can put a serious strain on a
child throughout all classroom subjects. Because learning all academic content
requires comprehension in some form, students who struggle with comprehension
often fall far behind their classmates academically in multiple areas.
5. BULLYING

Some students who are bullied are afraid to show their potential or capability because
bullying is one of the problematic situations in school.

Excellent! Let us see how we can assist and learn at the same time.

Suppose, the problem you have spotted is: COMPREHENSION.

How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
comprehension?

Make a Choice for your ACTION.

A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.

B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.

C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.

Suppose you chose letter A. Conduct a Tutorial. So you have identified the
SOLUTION that matches the PROBLEM which is Difficulty in Comprehension.

The Problem is: The Action is:

Difficulty in
Comprehension of Conduct a Tutorial
Reading.

Can you also choose letter B: Show video lesson as a SOLUTION for the same
PROBLEM? Yes Explain. As a solution to the same problem, I believe that selecting
Option B, showing video lessons can also assist students in developing their reading
skills. Additionally, because students can both read and hear how to pronounce
words, a video lesson is an excellent tactical intervention tool for teaching correct
pronunciation. Through the provision of instructional or opinion videos containing
reading and comprehension strategies and tips for enhanced comprehension. You can

The Problem is: The Action is:

Difficulty in
Comprehension of Show a video lessons
Reading

What about letter C as a SOLUTION to the same PROBLEM? Yes Why?

I think that the third suggestion, which is to design learning tasks to improve
comprehension, can enhance reading abilities in a way that makes it practical for
teachers to use. Additionally, teachers may monitor their students' learning progress,
figure out which words are challenging for them to read, and create the most effective
strategic intervention materials.

The Problem is: The Action is:

Difficulty in
Make learning tasks to
Comprehension of
improve comprehension
Reading

Interesting, isn’t it? Now, you can assist your mentor by identifying observed problems
in the class and suggest actions to be done.
Notice

What have you noticed of the problem identified above? Can there be more than
one solution to the problem? Explain.

The problem of understanding, which has many solutions, can be solved in a

number of ways. Instead of focusing solely on one student, I believe that every
educator ought to look for a solution that will be more beneficial to each student's
learning.

A creative and innovative teacher can find one or more than one solution or
answer to the same problem. Each solution matches with the problem. The more
solutions identified to choose from, the better for an action researcher.

Analyze

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This
scenario might also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She has
forty learners in her class. One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates
aņd invertebrates. She has been repeating the same science lesson for two weeks, yet
no progress was observed. This situation been bothering Miss Fely.

 Can you identify, Miss Fely's problem?

Yes, There are forty students in her class. Half of them are unable to differentiate
between animals' invertebrates and vertebrates. She has been giving the same
scientific lecture for the past two weeks, but nothing has changed.

 Can you find a solution to solve her problem? Yes Give your two suggestions.

A. Miss Fely should use charts with the animal classification at the top, which will
serve as the heading, I can suggest. The definitions of the two classes are
followed by images of vertebrate and invertebrate animals to help all students
understand the differences. She may assist her students in visualizing concepts
by utilizing charts and images. Additionally, using that method, her students
might find it simpler to comprehend the material and make connections. Lastly,
Miss Fely can use a picture to show her students the difference between
vertebrates and invertebrates.

B. I can also suggest Miss Fely to use a video presentation to show the difference
between vertebrates and invertebrates. Miss Fely ought to keep in mind that
students acquire a lot from their experiences. Additionally, it will make teaching
the lesson simpler for her. She might be able to hold the attention of her fourth-
grade students and assist them in analyzing, comprehending, and recalling the
information by using movies. Because students in this grade level need a
presentation to learn, it is essential to keep in mind that students will not be
able to comprehend vertebrates and invertebrates by simply discussing them.
As a result, using a video presentation would be ideal.

 What solution can solve Miss Fely's problem?

Out of the two options I offered Miss Fely, I believe that the use of video
presentations with relevant content will most likely assist her. Since Miss Fely
instructs students in the fourth grade, I am convinced that this strategy will
solve her issue because I believe that students in that grade level will find
watching videos entertaining. To learn, students in that grade need to watch a
presentation.

 How?

That is, by putting the solution into practice. She must first select films for
children in the fourth grade. She must then ensure that the content does not
contain any inappropriately violent videos for students to watch. She must also
discuss the topic and demonstrate the films to the students. As a result, prior
to the presentation's conclusion, she must summarize and emphasize the
primary concepts from the lesson.

Are they matched with the problem?

Yes, I believe so. My earlier suggestions address Miss Fely's problem. Miss
Fely's concern about her students' lack of understanding of their topic on
vertebrates and invertebrates is addressed by the solutions provided.
Additionally, since the suggested approach calls for the use of instructional
videos and charts, as well as other visual and auditory materials, the teacher
would have an easier time discussing the topic with her students. Also, this
would make it easier for her students to learn and make connections between
the resources they have available on their topic.

Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his

learners come from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their
guardians who stand only as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food,
clothing and shelter.

 Can you identify the most probable teaching-learning problem/s in the class of
Sir Ryan?
A. The most likely teaching-learning issue in Sir Ryan's class is a lack of parental
support because the majority of his students come from broken families, which
immediately limits parental time and parenting inputs.
B. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds who live in urban areas frequently
do not have access to basic necessities like food, clothing, and shelter. This has
a negative impact on their motivation, which in turn leads to lower levels of
student enthusiasm and attendance.

 Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that you have
identified?

Making students and parents accountable for frequent and unjustified

absences is, in my opinion, one of the best strategies for addressing attendance
issues and low student motivation. He must also enforce a strict attendance
policy to address the issue of frequent absences. Every day, prior to the start of
the class discussion, Sir Ryan is required to present inspirational sayings,
stories, or movies. These factors will motivate his children to respect education
and recognize that their current circumstances are only temporary. He must
demonstrate to his students that if they are motivated to learn, they too can
overcome obstacles and achieve fame and fortune. There are numerous
examples of people who have done this.

Reflect

After reading the two Scenarios given above, how would identifying problematic
situations and finding solutions to these problems help you to become a better
teacher? Explain: As a potential teacher, you need to be on the lookout for
troubling situations. How? by allowing oneself to concentrate on the particulars
of the environment. I could become a better teacher in the long run if I
improved my ability to look and pay attention, which would allow me to identify
challenging classroom situations and devise feasible solutions. Additionally, it
aids in my development and comprehension of class-related issues.
Write Action Research Prompts

Using any one example of problems in this activity, answer the AR prompts that
follow:

OBSERVE

What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?

 Participation, family life, and social standing can all influence how well teachers
and students can teach and learn in the classroom. The majority of Sir Ryan's
students in scenario two came from low-income metropolitan areas and chaotic
homes. There is a possibility that they are not paying attention to every lesson
that teacher Ryan teaches, that more students are dropping out, that more
students are missing classes, and that they are not interested in the lessons.
Also, there is a possibility that they are not interested in the lessons.
Additionally, they might not be interested in the lessons. All of these things
could lead to a decline in attendance and engagement.

REFLECT

What changes do you want to achieve?

 To begin, I want to engage in social interaction with students while
simultaneously providing them with a purposeful teaching-learning experience.
Second, I want them to be involved in every activity and to know that there is
support and hope for them. Thirdly, I want them to be aware of and to have
faith in the fact that I will do everything in my power to assist them in
improving. Additionally, I want them to know that I will do everything in my
power to assist them in improving their cooperation and enhancing their
educational experience. Last but not least, I want people to see things from a
different perspective and to believe that they can change for the better for
themselves.

PLAN
What strategies will you use to improve the situation?

 In order to improve the situation, I intend to frequently visit them at their home
to get to know them personally and develop a positive relationship with their
parents. I will be adaptable and sympathetic as a teacher. I will hold a
conference with the parents and establish the "Parents-Teacher Association"
organization. Parents and students ought to be able to express their concerns.
Because I am of the firm belief that fostering a positive attitude in the classroom
begins with me, I will present myself as a role model in order to gain their trust.
I will also reinforce and reward positive behavior because it is simple yet
effective to motivate students to do their best by praising them for their good
behavior. Students will be able to meet all of their requirements and arrive to
class prepared thanks to these methods. Even though I know it's hard, it will all
be good in the end if the teacher and parents are working toward the same
goals and heading in the same direction.

ACT
What would be the title of your Action Research should you conduct the study?

"Strategic Intervention and Effectiveness towards Social Status of Grade 8

Students" would be the title.

Add: Solutions/ actions

I will conduct this study as a teacher because I am confident that it will be

beneficial to both parents and students. I will gather the necessary materials
and ask the principal for permission to conduct this study. As part of the
research process, I will try to find a cash donation that will let me meet some of
the needs of the parents and students.

I. Title of Action Research:
Effectiveness Using Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) in Teaching Mathematics for
the Selected Grade Five Pupils of David P. Jimenez Elementary School

II. Author/s:
Cindy B. Hernandez, Elenor Guiang, Lorenza C Jornales

III. Abstract:

One of the major problems of a Mathematics teacher inside the classroom is the poor
performance of her pupils in performing basic multiplication facts. The study of
Mathematics is very crucial not only for the foundation of basic computational skills
but also for developing abstract and critical thinking. Strategic Intervention Material
(SIM) is used as a tool to improve students' performance specially the least mastered
skills in the selected subject or learning area in K to 12 basic education curricula,
determines how those schools achieved their performance levels. SIM is the process of
giving interventions to improve the performances of the students. SIM can help you
improve identified areas, teaching strategies or processes for pupil's performance
improvement.

IV. Identify the Problem in the Study

The major problems of a Mathematics teacher inside the classroom is the poor
performance of her pupils in performing basic multiplication facts.

V. Identify the Action Taken in the Study

The findings suggest that there is significant difference on the academic performance
of the grade five pupils after the intervention (SIM) was used based on the pre-test and
post-test given. Also, it shows the positive results of pupils in performing basic
multiplication facts. Most of the pupils show different ways on how to deal with the
lesson positively and they showed interested in dealing with the lessons. Strategic
Intervention Material (SIM) is used as a tool to improve students' performance
specially the least mastered skills in the selected subject or learning area in K to 12
basic education curricula, determines how those schools achieved their performance
