Stop 8 Queen Victoria Market
More than a shopping destination, the Queen Victoria Market
is a historic landmark and a leading tourist attraction. Over 125
years old, this vast and vibrant centre of trade and commerce
serves the consumer needs of more than 200,000 shoppers a
week. Spreading over some seven hectares, the market sells
everything from gourmet food and wine to clothes and souvenirs.
From this stop you can also visit the Melbourne Zoo by taking
tram number 55. The Flagstaff Gardens are also just a short
walk away.
Stop 9 Waterfront City, Docklands
From the intersection of Pearl River Road and Docklands
Drive, you are only minutes from a wide variety of waterfront
attractions. The Icehouse is home to ice-based events including
ice hockey, curling and more. You can take to the ice yourself on
one of the two Olympic-sized rinks. Harbour Town is all about
shopping. The Waterfront City Marina offers public berthing
facilities and is a great place to check out the boats. At New Quay
youll discover a host of restaurants and bars, while at Waterfront
City you can take a walk among stars of the Australian
entertainment industry.
Stop 10 Docklands Stadium & Victoria Harbour
From Harbour Esplanade youre in a great position to explore
Docklands, including Victoria Harbour with its dining, parks,
waterfront walks and more. Docklands Stadium (renamed Etihad
in March 2009) hosts many of the nations greatest sporting
events, along with concerts and more. Docklands Park has free
barbecues, picnic areas, an interactive Play Journey playground
for the kids and three wetlands attracting many indigenous birds
to the park.
Stop 11 William Street
Discover the history of Melbournes multicultural society at the
Immigration Museum, or learn more about Indigenous culture
past and present at the Koorie Heritage Trust Cultural Centre.
William Street is also home to Melbournes biggest legal institutions,
including the Law Courts, Supreme Courts and the County Court.
Take in some impressive architecture at the ANZ Gothic Bank or
wander down to the waterfront at Enterprize Wharf and explore the
amazing underwater world of Melbourne Aquarium.
Stop 12 Southbank & Yarra River
The chic riverside strip of Southbank is home to the Melbourne
Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as the glitz and glamour
of Crown Entertainment Complex where you can dance at a
nightclub, catch a movie, or eat at a waterside restaurant. Heading
east along the bank is Southgate, a popular shopping and restaurant
complex on the banks of the Yarra River. The Eureka Skydeck 88
is the southern hemispheres highest viewing platform with the
amazing Edge experience, a glass cube which projects 3 metres out
from the building suspended almost 300 metres above the ground.
Visit a classic tall ship, the Polly Woodside, and learn about maritime
history at the Melbourne Maritime Museum.
Stop 13 The Shrine and Royal Botanic Gardens
One of Melbournes most recognisable landmarks, the Shrine of
Remembrance, is Victorias memorial to the service and sacrice of
its men and women in times of conict. The Royal Botanic Gardens
Melbourne is a must-see attraction for spectacular scenery and
native bird-life. The Botanic Gardens feature an award winning garden
shop and visitor centre, the Ian Potter Foundation Childrens Garden
and cafes. Nearby are the formal parklands of Kings Domain, the
world-class performance venue of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl,
Government House and La Trobes Cottage.
