The memoir titled "Katipunan and the Revolution: Memoirs of a General" was written by Santiago V. Alvarez, a revolutionary general and founder of the Nacionalista Party who was deeply involved in the Katipunan society and Philippine Revolution. The memoir provides Alvarez's first-hand account of the events surrounding the Revolution from 1896 to 1897, including the Tejeros Convention, as he seeks to convey the true struggles and sacrifices of the Revolution from his perspective as a leader in the Magdiwang faction. However, as a participant from a faction that opposed Emilio Aguinaldo's Magdalo party, his recounting of events may differ from others involved.

general and founder and honorary president of the first directorate of the
Nacionalista Party. Prior to the outbreak of the revolution, Santiago was already a
delegate general of the provincial council of the Katipunan in Cavite. He became
captain general and later, commander-in-chief, of the Magdiwang forces and
valiantly fought the Spaniards from 1896 to 1897.

different facets of the Revolution, for the youth whom he considered as the direct

❖ The Katipunan and the Revolution: Memoir of the General was published by
Ateneo de Manila University in 1992 and reprinted in 1996

Describe the historical context. What was happening during this event or time period?

❖ The Katipunan served as an awakening call for the Filipinos to fight for their
freedom. In his memoir, he narrated the events that took place before the outbreak
of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish rule. The author of the memoir,
Santiago Alvarez, claimed to be one of those who guided the revolution. The
contents of his notes based on the events and records that the Katipunans had
entrusted to him. Thus, he was not only an eye witness but also an active
participant of the events he narrated on his work.

The Tejeros Convention was mentioned on his memoir wherein on March 22, 1897
the Tejeros Convention was held in order to reconcile the differences between the
two factions of the Katipunan: the Magdalo, which viewed Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy
as its leader, and the Magdiwang, which gravitated towards Andres Bonifacio. As a
result, it was decided that the Katipunan should be disbanded and a revolutionary
government should be set up. Its executives were chosen by elections; Emilio
Aguinaldo was chosen as president and Andres Bonifacio, the former Katipunan
commander, was chosen as director of the interior. Initially agreeing with him,
Bonifacio was offended when Daniel Tirona opposed. In addition to establishing a
new administration, Bonifacio proclaimed the Tejeros Convention procedures null
and void. The others considered this to be a treasonous conduct, and Bonifacio
was accused of doing so by refusing to acknowledge the newly formed
Revolutionary Government. In Maragondon, Cavite, he was detained and given a
death sentence.
