(See figure 1.) A Compressor ‘The compressor assembly consists of a compressor front support assembly, compressor rotor assembly, compressor case assembly, and compressor diffuser assembly. Air enters. the engine through the compressor inlet and is compressed by four axial compressor stages and one centrifugal stage. The compressed air is discharged through the scroll type diffuser into two ducts which convey the air to the combustion section. ‘Combustion Section ‘The combustion section consists of the outer combustion case and the combustion liner. A ‘spark igniter and a fuel nozzle are mounted in the aft end of the outer combustion case. Air enters the single combustion liner at the aft end, through holes in the liner dome and skin. ‘The air is mixed with fuel sprayed from the fuel nozzle and combustion takes place. Combus- tion gases move forward out of the combustion liner to the first-stage gas producer turbine nozzle. 72-00-00 Paget Oct 15/97 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R SERIES OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE PARA 2. (cont) c. Turbine The turbine consists of a gas producer turbine support, a power turbine suppor, a turbine and ‘exhaust collector support, a gas producer turbine rotor and a power turbine rotor. The turbine is mounted be tween the combustion section and the power and accessory gearbox. The two-stage gas producer turbine drives the compressor and accessory gear train. The two— ‘stage power turbine fumishes the output power of the engine. The expanded gas discharges in an upward direction through the twin ducts of the turbine and exhaust collector support. Power and Accessory Gearbox ‘The main power and accessory drive gear trains are enclosed in a single gear case. The ‘gear case serves as the structural support of the engine. All engine components including the engine mounted accessory are attached to the case. A two-stage helical and spur gear set is used to reduce rotational speed from 33,290 rpm at the power turbine to 6016 rpm at the output drive spline. Accessories driven by the power turbine gear train are the airframe furnished power turbine tachometer-generator and the power turbine govemor. The gas pro- ducer gear train drives the compressor, fuel pump, an airframe furnished gas producer ‘tachometer-generator, and gas producer fuel control. The starter drive isin this gear train, 3. Systems ‘The major systems of the engine are fuel, lubrication, electrical, anti-icing air, and compressor bleed air. A Fuel System Fuel Control System. The principal components of the fuel system are a fuel pump, a gas producer fuel control, a power turbine governor, and a fuel nozzle. The fuel control is located ‘schematically in the system between the fuel pump and the fuel nozzle. (See figures 2, and 3.) A functional description of the fuel system follows. (1) Fuel Control System (See figures 4 and 5.) ‘The system controls engine power output by controlling the gas producer speed. Gas pro- ducer speed levels are established by the action of the power turbine governor which ‘senses power turbine speed. The power turbine (load) speed is selected by the operator and the power required to maintain this speed is automatically maintained by the power turbine governor resetting the fuel control. The power turbine governor lever schedules the power turbine governor requirements. ‘The power turbine governor, in tum, schedules the gas producer speed to a changed power output to maintain output shaft speed. 72-00-00 Page 2 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance 250-C20R/1 250-C20R,-C20R/1(RS),-C20R(ST) Engine Left Side View Figure 1 (Sheet 1 of 2) 72-00-00 Page JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance 0802 250-C20R/2, C20R/4 250-C20R/2(SP) ‘AEAGGSXO Engine Left Side View Figure 1 (Sheet 2 of 2) 72-00-00 Page 4 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R SERIES OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE FUEL NOZZLE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER Fuel System Schematic (All Except C20R/2(SP)) Figure 2 72-00-00 Page 5 Oct 15/97 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R SERIES OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE courresson a porcoumnaron DSCHAACE S sxcuscnen PRSSVAER: oO ‘CHECK VALVE FUEL NOZZLE POWER TURBINE FUEL GOVERNOR Shee ee rue som Un. sent AERALTER, (RE Aine CANAISODE USED Tis STE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER fesmeve [xe Fuel System Schematic (250-C20R/2(SP)) Figure 3 72-00-00 Page 6 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance ‘exezosav ansrow ons 00 nora OTERO ansssusuncaurnes (i) yeinbi4 ((se) ru0zo~'1r40z0~"40z0-082) oewEYOS JonUOD WaIshs fon vera 72-00-00 Page 7 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance seinbis (Uis)doz0-"rdoz0- ‘(ds}en4ozo-'zr40Zo-082) onteWeYDS forIUED WeIshs jen ‘axocosav sarsessonasvowsio (&) amssousnorsenaunacon (i) anesouravounons (Gy) aurssasuonarco (6) aresauzoumesavossounco (34) 72-00-00 Page 8 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance PARA 3.A. (1) (cont) 2) Fuel flow for engine controlis established as a function of compressor discharge pressure (P<), engine speed (gas producer-N, and/or power turbine-Na), and gas producer lever angle. Fuel low is a function of P, as sensed in the fuel control. Variations of the fuel low schedules are obtained by modulating the Pe to P, and Py pressures in the control through the action of a bleeddown circuit actuated by the governors. (See figures 4 and 5.) Gas Producer Fuel Control. ‘This gas producer fuel control has a bypass valve, metering valve, acceleration bellows, governing and enrichment belows, manually-operated cutoff valve, maximum pressure relief valve, a start acceleration flow schedule adjuster and a start derichment valve. The maximum pressure relief valve is incorporated to protect the system from excessive fuel pressure. Fuel enters the control from the engine fuel pump and fter assembly and is conveyed to the metering valve. The bypass valve maintains a constant pressure differential across the metering valve and bypasses excess fuel back to the fuel pump and fiter assembly through an external line connecting the pump bypass inlet to the bypass outlet port of the {gas producer fuel control. ‘The metering valve is operated by lever action through movement of the governor and. acceleration bellows. Metering valve area is a function of valve travel. Before light-otf and acceleration the metering valve is established at a predetermined open position by the acceleration bellows (aneroid) under influence of ambient pressure (P,, at zero rpm). ‘The start derichment valve is open during light-off and acceleration to a set Pe. The open derichment valve vents Py pressure to atmosphere. Venting Py allows the governor bel- lows to move the metering valve toward the min flow stop. Derichment provides the required lean fuel schedule after light-off. As compressor rpm increases, the derichment valve is closed by Pe acting on the derichment bellows. When the derichment valve is. élosed, control of the metering valve is returned to the normal operating schedule. The start derichment schedule can be varied by a manual adjustment on the fuel control. The start acceleration schedule adjuster allows field adjustment of the start and acceleration fuel flow schedule. During acceleration the P, and Py pressures are equal to the modified compressor dis- charge pressure (P,) upto the point where the speed enrichment orifice is opened by ty- weight action. Opening the speed enrichment orifice bleeds P, pressure while Py remains ata value equal to P,. Under the influence of the Py minus P, pressure drop across the governor bellows, the metering valve moves toward the max flow stop where it provides increased fuel flow. Gas producer speed is controlled by the gas producer fuel control governor. A set of fly- weights operate the governor lever which controls the governor bellows Py pressure bleed off atthe governing orice. Flyweight operation of the governor lever is opposed by a vari- able spring load. The spring force is established by the throttle lever acting on a spring ‘scheduling cam. Opening the governing orifice bleeds off Py pressure. In response to this reduction in Py pressure, the bellows moves the metering valve toward min flow and at a position where metered flow is at steady state requirements. 72-00-00 Page 9 JUL 1/95 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance PARA 3.A. (2) (cont) @) (4) (6) “The governor reset section of the gas producer fuel control permits the power turbine gov- cernorto override the speed governing elements ofthe fuel control to alter the fuel schedule inresponse to changing load conditions appliedto the power turbine. A P,—Pg valve incor- porated in the fuel control prevents Ny engine speed undershoot during gas producer decelerations when the Ny; throttle is moved to the Ground Idle position. This is accom- plished by opening the throttle actuated P, - Py valve which equalizes P, — Pg pressures, eliminating the reset action supplied from the power turbine governor. Power Turbine Governor (See figures 4 and 5.) ‘The power turbine speed is scheduled by the power turbine govemor lever and the power turbine speed scheduling cam. The cam sets a governor spring load which opposes a speed-weight output. As the desired speed is approached the speed weights, operating against the governor spring, move a link to open the power turbine governor orifice. The speed weights also open the overspeed bleed (P,) orifice, but, at a higher speed than here the regular governor ofiice (Pg) is opened. ‘The governor orifice is downstream of a bleed supplied by a regulated air pressure, P,. Opening the orifice results in a reduced pressure downstream of the bleed (P.) as an inverse function of increasing speed. Regulated pressure (P,) and governing pressure (4) are applied to opposite sides of a diaphragmin the goverrior reset section of the gas producer fuel control. The force generated by P, ~ Pg across the diaphragm acts on the {gas producer power governor lever through the governor reset rod and supplements the weight force in the gas producer fuel governor to reset (reduce) the gas producer speed. Gas producer speed cannot exceed the gas producer fuel governor setting. ‘The P,P, diaphragmis preloaded for establishing the active P, minus Pg range. P;pres- sure is supplied from engine P., pressure by an air regulator valve, ‘The overspeed orifice bleeds P, pressure from the governing system of the gas producer fuel control. Bleeding P, pressure at the power turbine governor gives the fuel control sys- tem a rapid response to overspeed conditions, Electronic Power Turbine Overspeed Control System (250-C20R, C20R/1, C20R/1(RS) only). ‘This systemis in addition to the overspeed protection systemin the power turbine fuel gov- ‘ernor. Itprovides overspeed protection for the power turbine in the event of a matfunction of either the governor or the gear train that provides the governor speed sense. The elec- tronic system consists of a turbine mounted magnetic pickup that senses turbine speed, control box, and a solenoid operated P vent valve. The vent valve reduces Py pressure to cause the gas producer fuel flow to go to minimum in the event of power turbine over- speed. Single Element Fuel Pump and Filter Assembly—Non-Boosted. (See figures 6 and 7) ‘The fuel pump and fiter assembly incorporates a single gear-type pumping element, a low pressure barrier fier, a filter bypass valve, and a bypass pressure regulating valve. Fuel enters the engine fuel system at the inlet port of the purnp and passes through the low pressure fitter before entering the gear element. The fitter bypass valve allows fuel to bypass the filter element if it becomes clogged. 72-00-00 Page 10 JUL 1/95 EXPORT CONTROLLED Rolls-Royce Allison 250-C20R SERIES OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE. By means of passages leading to auxiliary filing ports on the periphery of the {gear element, a portion of the bypass flow is used to fill the gear teeth when vapor-liquid conditions exist at the inlet to the gear element. ‘The 5 micron nominal/15 micron absolute replaceable fiteris located inside the fuel pump ‘assembly upstream of the gear element, Itis retained by acastcover attached to the pump housing by two socket head cap screws. The cover is located on the att side of the pump. ‘To minimize fuel spillage during filter replacement, fuel may be drained through the lower of the two drain ports located on the aft face of the filter cover. Pressure taps are provided before and after (labeled BF and AF) the filter element to permit measurement of fiter pressure drop if desired. Single Element Fuel Pump and Filter Assembly—Integrally Boosted. (See figure 8.) ‘The fuel pump and filter assembly incorporates a single gear-type pumping element, a jet eductor/inducer boost pump, a self-relieving inlet screen, and a high pressure barrier filter with a bypass valve, impending bypass indicator and vapor vent. Fuel enters the engine fuel system at the inlet port of the pump. Bypass flow fromthe fuel control is accelerated through a nozzle located near the inlet. This creates a suction at the pump inlet. The bypass flow is then combined with inlet flow and decelerated through a mixing tube (divergent nozzle) resulting in a pressure recovery and positive pressure (boos!) at the gear pump inlet. Prior to entering the gear pump, the fuel passes through course, selt-telieving, strainer that removes very large size particle contamination. The filter bypass vaive, located between the filter inlet and oullel, allows fuel to bypass the high-pressure fiter element if it becomes clogged. NOTE: The suction fuel pump is usable only on aircratt certified for installation of the 250-C20R/2(SP) Engine, PIN 23053265. These aircraft incorporate a ‘vapor vent return line to the fuel tank which is required for proper function of the fuel system. A three micron nominal, seven micron absolute paper fier is used. The filter assembly isa self-contained unit consisting of a filter housing, element, bypass valve and impend- ing bypass indicator. The fiter assembly is attached to the side of the fuel pump with three bolts. The fiter element is accessible by unscrewing the element cover from the housing. ‘A fuel filter impending bypass indicator is located on the filter housing. The indicator ‘extends a red colored button when the element pressure drop reaches a predetermined value and prior to opening of the filter bypass valve, Before and after filter pressure taps are provided to measure fitter pressure drop, Fuel Nozzle. The fuel nozzle is a single—entry dual-oritice type unit which contains an integral valve for dividing primary and secondary flow. 72-00-00 Page 12 Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance PARA 3. (cont) Lubrication System (See figures 9 and 10.) CAUTION: OIL SCREENS SHOWN ON FIGURE 9 ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. THE OD OF THE POWER TURBINE SUPPORT OIL SCREEN IS 0.325 INCH (8.26 MM) WHERE THE POWER AND ACCESSORY GEARBOX HOUSING ‘SCREEN IS 0.360 INCH (9.14 MM). ‘The lubrication system is a dry sump type with an aircraft furnished extemal reservoir, heat exchanger, and extemal oil fiter. A gear-type pressure and scavenge pump assembly is ‘mounted within the gearbox. An assembly containing an oil fier element, a fiter bypass valve, and a pressure regulating valve is located in the upper right hand side of the gearbox housing and is accessible from the top of the engine. A check valve, located between the filter package and the accessories gearbox, prevents oil from draining into the engine from. the aircraft tank when the engine is not in operation. Indicating type magnetic chip detectors (Grain plugs) are installed at the bottom of the gearbox and at the engine oil outlet connection All engine oil system lines and connections are internal except the pressure and scavenge lines to the compressor front bearing and the bearings in the gas producer and power turbine supports. Ignition System (See figures 11, 12, 13 oF 14.) The engine ignition system consists ofa low tension capacitor discharge ignition exciter, a spark igniter lead, and a shunted surface gap spark igniter. The system derives its input power from a 14 fo 29 volt, d-c external power source. (The starter counter and ignition ex- citer are airframe mounted on the 250-C20R,-C20A(ST) engine.) A start counter is mounted on the gearbox cover just behind the ignition exciter. The counter records the total starts on the engine. Itis electrically connected to the power input terminal of the exciter and counts one each time the ignition system is energized. A lead seal pro- Vides tamper-proof security ‘Temperature Measurement System (See figures 11, 12, 19 or 14.) ‘The temperature measurement system consists of four chromel-alumel single junction ther- ‘mocouples in the gas producer turbine outlet and an associated integral terminal. The vott- ages of the four thermocouples are electrically averaged in the assembly. The airframe tem- perature indicating system attaches to the integral terminal of the thermocouple assembly. Anti-feing System The compressor inlet guide vanes and front bearing support hub are the engine components with anti-icing provisions. Anti~icing is provided by the use of compressor discharge air hich is taken from a fitting at the ten o'clock position on the side face of the compressor scroll. An electrically operated air shut-off valve is used to control anti-icing air. An ice detector is not furnished with this engine. Performance average changes due to operation of ant Compressor Bleed Air System. (See figures 15 and 16.) ‘The compressor bleed air system permits rapid engine response. The system consists of a ‘compressor discharge pressure sensing port on the scroll, tubing from the sensing port to the bleed valve, a compressor bleed control valve, and a bleed air manifold and adapter. ‘An annular slot atthe inlet to the impeller blades bleeds compressor air into a manifold. The compressor bleed control valve mounts on the adapter which mounts on the manifold. Compressor discharge air pressure sensing, for bleed control valve operation, is obtained at a sensing port on the compressor scroll. Oil Specification. ‘The 250 series engines are qualified and certified for use with MIL-PAF-7808G and subse- quent, MIL-PRF-23699 series and DOD:L-85734 series lubricating oils. The vendor brands of MIL-PRF-7808 series, MIL-PRF-23699 series, and DOD-L-85734 series lubricating ails, which have been engine tested and approved for use in the Model 250 engine are listed in para 4.C.(2), Approved Oils. Refer to paragraph C.(1), Cold Weather Lubrication, for the type of oil recommended at specitic temperatures. WARNING: ONLY DISCRETIONARY MIXING OF OILS WITHIN AN OIL SERIES IS PER- MITTED WITHOUT A TIME PENALTY. USE OF MIXED OILS FROM DIFFERENT SERIES IN AN ENGINE IS LIMITED TO FIVE HOURS TOTAL RUNNING TIME DURING ONE OVERHAUL PERIOD. ADEQUATE MAINTENANCE RECORDS MUST BE MAINTAINED TO ENSURE THAT THE FIVE HOUR LIMIT IS NOT EX- ‘CEEDED. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH OIL MIXING RESTRICTIONS CAN RE- SULT IN ENGINE FAILURE, CAUTION: IF HEAVY CARBON OR COKE DEPOSITS ARE FOUND ON THE ENGINE FILTER, DURING REGULAR INSPECTIONS, IT IS RECOMMENDED THE FILTERS BE RE- PLACED; CONTINUE TO MONITOR BYPASS INDICATORS. CAUTION: TO DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD FOR CARBON OR COKE DEPOSITS BEING DISLODGED DURING THE CHANGEOVER TO “SRD GENERATION" OILS (=.. MOBIL JET 254), THESE CHANGEOVERS SHOULD ONLY BE MADE WHEN THE ENGINE IS NEW OR REPAIRED, TO THE EXTENT THE LUBRICATION PAS- SAGES AND SUMPS HAVE BEEN CLEANED AND FLUSHED. CAUTION: WHILE CONSIDERABLE LABORATORY DATA IS AVAILABLE TO DEMONSTRATE ‘THE COMPATIBILITY OF ONE SYNTHETIC TURBINE OIL WITH OTHER TUR- BINE OILS MEETING THE SAME SPECIFICATION (AIRLINE EXPERIENCE DOES DEMONSTRATE THIS PROPERTY), THE INDISCRIMINATE MIXING OF AP- PROVED OILS DURING THE OPERATIONAL USE OF THE OIL IS NOT RECOM- MENDED. HOWEVER, THERE MAY BE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE EMERGEN- CY TOP-OFF, INADVERTENT MIXING, OR CHANGEOVER BY "TOP-OFF” TO. ANOTHER BRAND MAY OCCUR. THESE ARE ACCEPTED PRACTICES. 72-00-00 EXPORT CONTROLLED 250: PARA 4.C. MIL-PRF-7808G or subsequent only ~40 C (-40 F) to 135 C (275 F)....... DOD-L-85734 NOTE: Because of availability, reduced coking and better lubricating qualities at NOTE: higher temperatures, MIL-PRF-23699 oils are preferred for use in Model 250 engines. Check the engine oll quantity within 15 minutes of engine shutdown to avoid a false indication of excessive oil consumption. If the 15 minutes has been exceeded, motor the engine for 30 seconds with the starter before checking tank quantity. Motoring normally scavenges oil from the gearbox back to the aircraft oil tank. Check the airframe flight manual; some installations ‘may require engine to be operated for at least a minute at ground idle to assure proper scavenging of the engine gearbox. ‘Always refer to the airframe flight manual for proper oil servicing instrc- tions; specific requirements may vary for different models, 72-00-00 Page at EXPORT CONTROLLED Rolls-Royce 250-C20R SERIES OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE PARA 4.C. Preflight Inspections Before starting the engine, make a preflight inspection. (Refer to Preflight and Postfight. Inspections, tables 601, 72-00-00, Engine Inspection/Check.) WARNING: TO PREVENT ENGINE FUEL STARVATION AND SUBSEQUENT FLAME OUT, ANY AIRCRAFT REQUIRING FUEL BOOST PUMP(S) SHOULD USE THESE PUMPS AT ALL TIMES DURING FLIGHT OR AS DIRECTED IN THE AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL. CAUTION: BEFORE THE ENGINE IS OPERATED, MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSOR INLET IS FREE OF DEBRIS. ALSO, MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSOR ROTOR IS NOT FROZEN IF THE AIRCRAFT IS IN A FREEZING ATMO- SPHERE. ‘The procedures which follow pertain to operation of the engine at: start and ground idle; power range; practice autorotation, descent and landing; stopping; and during an emergency. B. Engine Starting Procedures WARNING: TO MAKE SURE OF ADEQUATE WARNING OF POSSIBLE EMERGENCY ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS, VERIFY THAT THE ENGINE WARN- ING SYSTEMS (ENGINE-OUT HORN, FILTER BYPASS LIGHT AND CHIP DETECTOR LIGHT) ARE OPERABLE BEFORE EACH FLIGHT. OVERTEMPERATURE STARTS OR AFTERFIRES AFTER SHUT-DOWN WILL CAUSE CRACKS IN THE TURBINE FIRST-STAGE WHEEL RIM. ‘THESE CRACKS CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE A SECTION OF THE WHEEL ‘TO BREAK OFF, CAUSING TURBINE IMBALANCE AND ENGINE FAILURE. CAUTION: FOR THE ULTIMATE SAFETY OF ALL PERSONNEL WHO COME IN CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH THE ENGINE, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PILOT AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL TO RECORD AND TAKE REC- OMMENDED CORRECTIVE ACTION WHEN OVERTEMPERATURE. OCCURS. ‘The 250-C20R Series engines have one qualified control system: Bendix DP-No fuel control system manufactured by the Energy Controls Division of Allied Bendix Aerospace. C. Electronic Power Turbine (Nz) Overspeed Control System Check (250-C20R,-C20A/1, =C20R/1(RS)). ‘The test circuit for the electronic Np overspeed control is equipped with a lockout switch that is activated at 80% No rpm and above to prevent excessive torque fluctuations in the event the check circuit malfunctioned or was inadvertently energized. NOTE: Ifthe electronic No overspeed control system has been disarmed in accordance with Bulletin CEB-A-73-4025, the dally check of the system is no longer required. 72-00-00 Page 46 JUL 1/95 PARA 7.C. (cont) Allison Engine Company 250-C20R Series Operation and Maintenance Itis recommended that a daily check be made of the electronic No overspeed control system and the lockout switch in the test circuit. While the aircraft is on the ground and the engine is ‘operating at idle speed (59-65% Nj), make the check as follows: NOTE: Various aircraft are equipped with C20R Series engines which use the electronic No ‘overspeed system. These aircraft may differ from the below outlined text due to installed engine configuration and cockpit dtferences. Refer to the current air- frame flight manual for the proper procedure. The electronic No overspeed control system may be checked as follows unless otherwise directed by the aircraft fight manual: a @) @) @) Increase throttle to obtain 85% No/Np. Engage the Press to Test switch and hold. (@) If Ne does not decrease indicating that the lockout switch is operating propery, release Press to Test switch and proceed to step (3). (b) If Na should decrease, the Press to Test lockout is not functioning; reduce the throttle to idle and then release the Press to Test switch. Maintenance is required. Return the throttie to ground idle position. Switch the starter/generator to the off posi- tion. Slowly advance the throttle to increase Nz speed. At 68% Nz engage the No ‘overspeed test switch and activate the start switch to provide ignition during the remainder of this test. Continue to advance the throttle and increase Np speed. Nz should not exceed 70% if the overspeed control is functioning. (a) I the overspeed system is operating property, the system will decelerate upon reaching 70% Nz and then accelerate back to 70% in cycle fashion. (©) Ife continues to increase with throttle advance beyond 70%, the test system is not operating properly. Maintenance action is required. Retard throttle to the ground idle position, release the starter switch, and release N2 ‘overspeed test switch. Do not release No overspeed test switch until the throttle has been retumed to the ground idle position. NOTE: Operators should be aware that activation of the ignition system during this test causes the cycle counter to function. Alison suggests that operators, take appropriate action to adjust log records accordingly, since ignition activation during this test is not considered a cycle. D.- Starting Starting procedure is given for an automatic start. WARNING: OVERTEMPERATURE STARTS OR AFTERFIRES AFTER SHUTDOWN WILL CAUSE CRACKS IN THE TURBINE FIRST-STAGE WHEEL RIM. ‘THESE CRACKS CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE A SECTION OF THE WHEEL ‘TO BREAK OFF, CAUSING TURBINE IMBALANCE AND ENGINE FAILURE. CAUTION: BEFORE THE ENGINE IS OPERATED, MAKE CERTAIN THE COM- PRESSOR INLET IS FREE OF DEBRIS. ALSO, MAKE CERTAIN THE COMPRESSOR ROTOR IS NOT FROZEN IF THE AIRCRAFT IS IN A FREEZING ATMOSPHERE. 72-00-00 Page 47 JUL 1/95
