College of Criminology
EC 1 – Fundamentals of Typewriting
1st Semester 2020-2021
Introduction
The Introduction to Keyboarding course is designed for individuals who have no formal
training in keyboarding. The objective is to teach students the skill of keyboarding –
essential to the learning of other computer applications and workplace skills. The course
begins with an overview of the basics of computer use. Students learn about the
components of the computer and keyboard, as well as the seating, posture, and hand
positioning necessary for efficient keyboarding. Students are then introduced to
keyboarding using the Typing Trainer software program. This software program uses a
variety of methods to acquaint the student, including graphical keyboard drills, and
keyboarding Self-Tests. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to
keyboard at minimum 10 words per minute.
Rationale
The purpose of this module is to help the students to develop their skills in typing to be
an efficient typist who can easily perform online research, type assessments, and take
online exams.
Objectives
By the end of this module you should be able to:
Familiarized the Home room keys
Learn the proper touching of the home row
Know the proper sitting positive while typing
WEEK 2
Discussion
Touch-typing is the technique of typing quickly and accurately without looking at the keys.
Position your fingers on the home keys on the middle row of your keyboard (asdf jkl;).
Starting with your left hand, place your little finger on key A, ring finger on S, middle finger
on D and index finger on F, let your thumb rest on the Space bar.
With your right hand, place your index finger on J, middle finger on K, ring finger on L and
your little finger on the next key.
Press Enter with the little finger of your right hand. In a Keyboard, there are small bumps
on the keys F and J, these bumps to help you fine the home position without having to
look at the keyboard, Now, keep your wrists straight and fingers curled in a relaxed
position but do not rest your hands anywhere.
TYPING INSTRUCTIONS.
Do not look at the keyboard while you type. Instead, try to memorize the positions of the
keys and the correct finger movements from one key to another and back.
Try to type as smoothly and accurately as possible to achieve the best possible efficiency.
Your typing will improve rapidly!
Each time a new letter is introduced, the Typing tutor will show you a diagram of the
keyboard on the screen. Try to learn the position of the keys from the picture on your
screen and avoid looking at the actual keyboard. Your will also see a picture indicating
which finger should press each key.
As you begin these typing lessons, remember to focus on accuracy. Aim for 100%
accuracy and speed will come with practice. Touch typing is all about developing muscle
memory through the consistent repetition of your finger movements. With practice, the
movements will become natural and you will find yourself typing faster and with less effort.
WEEK 2
The first principle of touch typing is to always return your fingers to the home row when
you are not typing. The home row will be the reference point from which you will learn the
positions of all the other keys. Most keyboards have small bumps on the f and j keys to
help you find the home row without looking at the keys.
Position your right hand so that your index finger is placed on j, your middle finger
is on k, your ring finger is on l and your pinky is on ; (the semicolon key). Let your
right thumb rest comfortably on the spacebar at the bottom of the keyboard.
Your hand should be raised above the keyboard with your fingers curving down to
point directly on the keys. This will make it easier for you to move your fingers
WEEK 2
without moving your hands. Take a moment to properly position your right hand
before continuing. It is very important to develop good habits early in your typing
practice.
Position your left hand so that your index finger is on f, your middle finger is on d,
your ring finger is on s and your pinky is on a. Your thumb can rest on the spacebar.
Check that your left hand is raised and your fingers are curved and pointed down
at the keys.
H and G
The keys we have covered so far can all be typed without moving your fingers
from the home row position. Now it is time to learn how to move your fingers off
the home row to reach the h and g keys. To reach these new keys, you will need
to move your index fingers to the sides. Practice extending your right index finger
to the left to hit the h key. Then try reaching to the right with your left index finger
for the g key. Afterwards, always remember to return your fingers to the home
keys.
WEEK 2
Our first touch typing lesson introduces 2 home row keys for the right hand: ( j k )
