ACTIVITY 4
MY PERSONAL DECISION-MAKING EXPERIENCE

The practice of leadership of teachers is recognized as an important

contribution to building a positive school environment and serves as a springboard for
developing excellent teachers. Although teachers are said to be leaders all day, as we
lead by example in things we do, some scenarios require more than just leading by
example. One of the many responsibilities of a leader is to be a decision-maker.
Decision-making is said to be the “process of making choices by identifying a
decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative solutions.” In the field of
teaching, decision-making involves not only the content of a lesson or teaching style. Part
of the long list of responsibilities of a teacher is to make good decisions for the benefit of
the many.
As a new teacher in the field and the youngest year-level chairman in my
school assignment, I faced and continuously faces ordeals that challenge me as a teacher
and as a leader. The lack of experience in the field made people and even myself question
my leadership ability. How will I handle the future challenges I’ll face as a new servant
leader? In my first year of teaching, I was given a designation I thought was too much for
me to handle.
“I am a conceptual decision maker. I’d like to have open-ended options and I desire that
whatever I choose, it will make an impact”
There is a price to every decision we make, and every day we deal with
situations that will ask us to decide using our basic knowledge or instinct. Although not all
decisions are as simple as choosing what we would like for breakfast. A lot more
scenarios require intensive weighing of options and imagining possibilities. I take comfort
that I am a conceptual decision maker. I daydream, yet I am creative. I can see things
connect and affect each other. My goal is to come up with holistic solutions in situations
where one’s leadership skills face great challenges.
My decision-making style fits my personality. I always love to think creatively
and uniquely. I decide on things that will make me stand out and will create a bigger
impact. In the scenarios I consider critical, never did I made a decision that made me
regret it. I was always satisfied with the decisions I made. However, if there will be events
in the future where I have a decision to make, I will use the consulting method of decision-
making to make efficient, informed decisions and gain ideas and support from my team
without delaying decision-making. Decision-making plays a key role in ensuring delivering
quality service. Apart from that, decisions made by a leader show how one cares for her
subordinates and has the best interest in mind. A leader who has a good decision-making
style decides for the benefit of her subordinates and a greater cause.
“The fear of wrong decision runs in heart of all good leaders and managers but the ability
to make the right decision despite the fear make them successful.”
When we're worried about making a mistake, our thinking may become limited
to that possibility. When you worry, it should be about finding solutions rather than
focusing solely on the existence of a threat. Focus your anxiety on actions that will lower
the likelihood of failure.
I worry about making decisions since I'm a young leader and I fear making
mistakes. People can become immobile out of dread of making mistakes. I am aware that
to combat this immobility, I must hone my emotional agility abilities. The process starts
with labeling my thoughts and feelings. Speaking your anxieties out loud can help them
go away. It is like turning on the light in a dark room. Next comes accepting reality. I
understand I must be more realistic than idealistic. Being idealistic is good, but it has to
be tempered by a sense of reality.
