Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. apply the knowledge of forensic science and its application in a court of law. ( C3 )
2. use scientific investigative processes in civil and criminal trials. ( C6 )

Course Description

This subject gives an overview of forensic science and its application in the court of law. Tremendous changes in all
aspects of scientific investigation of crimes have taken place in the past decade and are continuing at a rapid pace. The
explosive advances in science and technology are the main challenges to forensic science. Students of forensic science in
the Law Faculty obtain an overall bird’s eye view of this expanding science. They mainly relate to : 1. Current thinking on
Forensic Science 2. New tools and techniques in handling disputed documents. 3. DNA profiling 4. Interpreting expert
report.

Syllabus Content

1. Introduction

Relation of forensic science to law and its scope.


The application of forensic science in the criminal justice system.
Technical knowledge of an average man.
Better evidence is always verifiable.

2. Crime Scene Investigation

What is Crime Scene


Defining Crime Scene
Crime Scene Procedures
Crime Scene Documentations
SOP @ Standing Order Procedures

3. Finger Prints

History and development of finger print science.


Different patterns of finger prints.
Identification of and development of finger prints using powder and chemical methods.

4. Forensic Biology

Post-mortem and identification of death and time of death.


The human skeleton and determination of sex from skeleton.
Scientific examination of rape victims and accused.
Scientific examination of semen stains in rape cases.
Identification of human and animal hair and identification of blood types.

5. Forensic Serology

Blood stains at the crime scene.


Identification of blood stains.
Origin of blood stains i.e animal or human.
Normal or menstrual blood and blood grouping.
Enzyme types and basic DNA typing.

6. Types of Wounds and Injuries

Difference between a bruise, laceration and abrasion.


Injuries caused by sharp edged weapon, single edge and double edged.
