Magnets have north and south poles that can attract or repel each other. The area around a magnet where its magnetic force can be detected is called its magnetic field. Materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt are ferromagnetic, meaning they can be magnetized and are strongly magnetic. An electromagnet produces a magnetic field using an electric current in a coil of wire. Some materials are magnetic because the electron magnetic fields within their atoms are aligned, while in other materials the fields cancel out, making them non-magnetic.

PHENOMENA AROUND US)

SOME PROPERTIES OF
MAGNET
Have you wondered what a magnet is and why all materials are
not magnets? The ancient greeks discovered a mineral called
magnetite, that would attract things made of iron. Many magnets
are made of iron, nickel, cobalt, or mixtures of these

Magnetic poles
- Two magnets can push each other apart because of their
ends, or magnetic poles. Every magnet has a north pole and
a south pole.
If you place the north poles of two magnets together, they
will repel, or push away. If you place the north pole and
south pole of two magnets near each other, they will attract,
or come together. The saying “ opposites attract” applies
well to magnets.

Magnetic fields
The area surrounding a magnet where magnetic forces can
be detected is called line magnetic field. A magnetic object
placed anywhere in the magnetic field will be affected by
the magnet.
Magnetic force
Magnetic force explain why, when you hold a magnet close
enough to a paper clip, the paper clip will start to move
toward the magnet.
Ferromagnets
A material that can be turned into a magnet is called
ferromagnetic. Natural materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt
or, mixtures of these material have strong magnetic

properties. They are considered ferromagnets.

Electro Magnet
An electro magnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic
field is produced by an electric current. Electromagnets usually
consist of wire wound into a coil.

What Cause Magnetism?

Some material are magnetic. Some are not. For example,
you know that a magnet can pick up some metal objects
such as paper clips and iron nails. But it cannot pick up
paper, plastick or even pennies or aluminum foil.

The type of Atom

All matter is made of atoms. Electrons are negatively charged
particles of atoms. As an alectron moves in an atom, it make, or
includes a magnetic field. The electron will then have a north
and a south magnetic pole. In atoms, such as copper and
aluminum, the magnetic fields of the individual alectrons cancel
each other out. These material are not magnetic.
The Formation of Domains
In material such as iron , nicke and cobalt, groups of atoms from
tiny areas called domains the north and south poles of the atoms
in an domain line up and make a strong magnetic.
