Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to seek further solution on how to determine the effect of
Manure and Compost Tea solution (MCTS) as Organic Fertilizer for Mustard.
Specifically, the researcher sought to answer the question:

a. Is there a significant difference on the growth quality of Mustard

(Brassica rapa) with or without MCTS?
ABSTRACT

Health is everyone concern, the past generations are much conscious about their
health, some may do exercises, but some are watchful on things they eat. Lots of them
consumed greater amount of vegetables than anything else, but probably asking how
those vegetables are grew?

Hectares of vegetables owned by farmers are usually using chemical fertilizers

for it to grow fast and without damage, without the knowledge how it brought harmful
effects to humans.

The study merely focuses on the effectiveness of the Manure and Compost Tea
Solution (MCTS) as organic fertilizer which it could give alternative sources of it, with
the different list of ingredients that is being idealized through the availability of it in the
locality. Wherein, it could also be beneficial to both living things and the environment.

The process of making this MCTS organic fertilizer begins with the collection of
the composed ingredients. The next step in the production of this study involves
chopping; slicing; cutting; folding; and pressing of the following ingredient that has been
collected. Its process includes the storing of the sack that is filled with the collection of
the composed ingredients steeped in a drum of water over a desired period of time, and
sprayed over the soil and directly onto the Mustard (Brassica rapa) .

Based from the observations conducted through measuring the height of every
mustard in the sacks as Treatment group ( A1, A2,A3) and control group (B1,B2,B3) it is
found out that there is a greater incremental height in the treatment group than in the
controlled group. The use of MCTS is effective in mustard and it is an environmentally
friendly. The use of MCTS is highly recommended to farmers, since it is effective for
the growth of mustard plant, and it does not harm people who will consume the
vegetables.
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

There are lots of farmers who own a variety of plants that considers the rapidity
growth quality of it by using fertilizer. Many of them observes that the plants grew fast
and of good quality or appearance without considering that the plant itself absorbed the
chemicals present in the commercial fertilizers, which cause harmful effects to human
who consume it.

Nowadays, many of the farmers in our locality are still using the quick and fast
growth benefits that a commercial fertilizer can give, rather than knowing its harmful and
unhealthy effects to the fruit of their plant. That is why there are some agriculturists
encourage every farmers to use organic fertilizer rather than a commercial one.

Organic fertilizers ensure that the farms remain fertile for hundreds of years.
Land located at the site of ancient civilizations, such as India and China, are still fertile,
even though agriculture has been practiced there for thousands of years. Fertility
maintained because organic fertilizers were always used in the past. However, with the
increased use of chemical fertilizers today, the land is rapidly becoming infertile, forcing
many farmers to further increase their use of their chemical fertilizers or even leave the
farming industry entirely. (Kiran Patil, April 03, 2019)

Organic fertilizers are easily biodegradable and do not cause environmental

pollution. On the other hand, chemical fertilizers contaminate both the land and water,
which is a major cause of diseases for human beings and is the force behind the
extinction of a number of plants, animal, and insect species. (Kiran Patil, April 03, 2019)

Cow dung is high in organic materials and rich in nutrients. It contains about 3
percent nitrogen, 2 percent phosphorus, and 1 percent potassium (3-2-1 NPK).
Composted cow manure fertilizer makes an excellent growing medium for garden
plants. When turned compost and fed to plants and vegetables, cow manure becomes a
nutrient-rich fertilizer. Heavy manure like that of cows, should be mixed with lighter
materials, usual organic substances from vegetables matter. (Nikki Tilley, 2010)

Since there are still farmers who keeps on using the commercial fertilizers, the
Researcher conducted a study on the effect of manure and compost tea solution
(MCTS) as organic fertilizer since the materials are just being found around the locality.
With this, it may lessen or even eliminate the use of harmful effect of chemical fertilizers
that are commonly used by the farmers.
HYPOTHESIS

There is a significant difference between the two groups of Mustard (Brassica

rapa) from the different sacks in an early observation. The appearance of both groups of
this plant differs from the ones that has the application of the Manure and Compost Tea
Solution as an organic fertilizer from the other sacks with no application of it.

Experimental variables:

6 pieces of Mustard (Brassica rapa) seedlings

Independent variables:

Manure and Compost Tea Solution as Organic Fertilizer

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it contributes an alternative source of an organic

fertilizer that reduced the risk that may cause in consuming plants that had been used
with commercial fertilizers.

Specifically, this study would be beneficial to;

Farmers. This study is beneficial to farmers for them to use organic fertilizers like
MCTS to lessen the risks that was brought by the chemical fertilizers, and retained the
fertility of the soil, and saves the cost.

Consumers. Consumers has a great benefits with this study since it is organic, it
is a chemical—free, and brings what nutrients is present in the vegetables without
absorbing harmful chemicals brought by the vegetables that was sprayed by chemical
fertilizers.

Students. The study is significant to the students especially those who are
planning to take agriculture, since it gives an additional information about the effect of
MCTS in plants.

Future Researchers. This study is also beneficial to future researchers who

intend to study further on this investigation.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study is only limited to the effect of manure and compost tea solution in six
(6) seedlings of mustard plant which had been grouped as Experimental ( A1, A2 , A3),
and the control group ( B1 , B2 , B3 ). The study conducted at the Jardin de Tolosa
National High School.

The study used only a certain kind of vegetable which is the mustard, since it
grew fast, and focuses only to its growth quality, it can also be used in other varieties of
vegetables.
CHAPTER III
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discuss the results or findings of the study conducted, this gives
the average growth of mustard plant both in the treatment and in controlled group, and
determine whether the use of MCTS is effective or not.

Summary of Findings
Table 1. The height of mustard in treatment group (A1,A2,A3) and control

Based from the table, the initial height of mustard varies. If the difference of
the height is obtained daily for each group, there is a quite difference, there is greater
increase in the treatment group compared to the control group. To clearly determine its
effect, the summary table is shown.
Table 2. Summary table on the average growth of mustard both in treatment group and
in control group.

Average Average
(Initial Height) (Incremental Height)
Treatment Group 3.93 cm 12.27 cm
Control Group 5.35 cm 10.77 cm

From the table shown in column 3, there is a difference in the height of

mustard in the control group and treatment group. The average incremental height of
control is only 10.77cm, while in the treatment group its average incremental height is
12.27 cm. It clearly shows that there is a difference in the height of the two groups after
the MCTS is applied in the experimental group.
Conclusions

The study aimed to determine the effect of Manure and Compost Tea Solution
as Organic Fertilizer for mustard. The height of the plants were obtained daily both in
the treatment group and control group.

Based from the given data, there is an incremental height of mustard in the
treatment group than the control group. Furthermore, there is a significant difference on
the incremental height of mustard with the MCTS.

That Manure and Compost Tea Solution as Organic Fertilizer is found to be

effective and it protect the plant from being damaged. The MCTS as fertilizer can also
be use as pesticide which we knew that these organisms may cause the damage of the
plant, the researcher were able to find out that MCTS both hit the two, as fertilizer and
pesticide, knowing that from the content used by the researcher in doing a fertilizer, it
can really be used as an organic fertilizer.

Recommendation

As the study may show positive results, the researcher encourages future
researchers to use other variety of plants and try to vary the content of the organic
fertilizers to determine specifically what content might be lacking from making it more
effective.

On second thought, try testing it from a farmland area which measures large
square meters/hectares where there are lots of varieties of plants. Wherein, this study of
a source of an organic fertilizer may also use to observe with the chemical fertilizer
where the comparison of the effectiveness of it takes place.

The study shows that the used ingredients that were being compose are
effective, based from the observations and discussions, ,the different list of ingredients
gives great benefits to the plants which may not only focus to the growth quality of it but
also protecting it against pests. Apart from that, it is also an environmentally friendly.

RECOMMENDATION

As the study may show positive results, try using this MCTS organic fertilizer
from other kinds of plants whereon try to vary specifically what content might be lacking
from making it more effective. Or rather it could do an additional task, whereon the
remains of manure left in the sack could use and spread it as fertilizers around crops.

On second thought, try testing it from a farmland area which measures large
square meters/hectares where there are lots of many varieties of plants. Wherein, this
study of a source of an organic fertilizer may also use to observe with the chemical
fertilizer where the comparison of the effectiveness of it takes place.

The study shows that the used ingredients that were being compose are
effective, based from the observations and discussions, ,the different list of ingredients
gives great benefits to the plants which may not only focus to the growth quality of it but
also protecting it against pests. Apart from that all, it really sustain the state of the
environment which contributes a good source of an organic fertilizer.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLODY

Research Design

This research is quantitative since it seek to answer the effect of MCTS in

mustard as it is being determined through measuring its height and counting the number
of leaves present in a certain plant.

Materials and Equipment

The researcher used the following materials for MCTS; various aged cow
manure, bird eye chilli pepper, marigold flower, heavenly elixir, Cocoa leaves, and
Lemon grass.

Materials had been gathered, the researcher started to plant the seeds of
mustard in the sacks containing the same amount and same quality of soil. The
researcher started to gather an aged cow manure and dried it, other materials used in
the compost tea; 2 kilos chopped Heavenly elixir, ½ kilo of sliced chilli pepper, 10 pieces
pressed dried cocoa leaves, 25 leaves of Lemmon grass cut into 12 inches, 10 pieces
of marigold flowers. Other equipments used are; knife, chopping board, containers and
sacks.

Treatment and General Procedure

Six (6) mustard seeds were group into two with 3 seeds each and one seed per
sack, for treatment (A1 , A2, A3 ) and controlled group (B1, B2, B3 ). Each seeds were
placed inside the sack containing the soil with a depth of 1 inch.

While waiting for it to grow, the researcher prepares the MCTS, all the chopped
materials were placed in a container, and the dried manure was placed inside the sack.
Heavenly elixir (makabuhay) was added to the manure, and chilli pepper has scattered
inside the sack, and lay the pressed mother cocoa leaves on top of it, and pushed it
against the bottom using the gloves for it to provide space for the remaining materials.
45 pieces of marigold’s flowers was then added inside the sack; lastly is the
lemongrasses.

From there you may press the top again to push and compress all of the
ingredients downward. After these tasks, Pour 60 litres of boiled water inside a sturdy
container. Then finally, lift up the sack filled with the mixture of composed ingredients
and then slowly put it inside the container containing the boiled water.

Make sure that the sack is thoroughly soaked that it could let the water absorbs
the mixed substances inside the sack. Wait for about 13 hours before you will use the
solution to apply it in the experimental variables. After two weeks of planting the seeds,
MCTS is sprayed directly on the leaves and on the soil daily in the three sacks of
experimental group.
