Written Assignment Unit 7

The document discusses three different types of organizational structures: 1) A matrix organization balances the benefits of functional and product-based structures by having employees report to both their department and project/product managers, though this can cause power struggles. 2) A boundaryless organization eliminates barriers between departments and the external environment, allowing for collaboration but potentially causing issues for those not used to teamwork. 3) An organizational learning environment encourages learning from mistakes to drive innovation, though it requires time for training which increases costs. The benefits include constant learning and experimentation.

Written Assignment Unit 7

A Matrix Organization is a structure that is used to create a balance between of benefits

between product-based structures and also traditional functional structures, with employees

reporting directly to their department manager as well as a project or product manager. But

this structure comes with both challenges and also benefits. These challenges can cause a rise

in conflict. With having two or more managers there can be a power struggles as managers

are accustomed to a more traditional structure whereby employees would solely come to (1)

one manager to discuss issues/concerns or even ideas with them it would now have to pass

through a channel of managers to decide, which can cause the power struggle. On the other

hand, there are also benefits to a Matrix Organization which can increase the frequency of

informal/formal communication and cooperation among departments within the organization.

A Boundaryless Organization refers to an organization that eliminates traditional barriers

between departments as well as barriers between the organization and the external

environment. Carpenter, M., Bauer, T., & Erdogan, B. (2010). Management principles, v. 1.1.

With this type of Organizational structure there are some advantages and also some

disadvantages. An advantage of a Boundaryless Organization would be creating and area of

collaborations between partners with one or more companies to combine efforts that can be

both beneficial for both parties. A disadvantage to this type of Organizational structure can

force employees who are used to working by themselves or not used to being a team player

they may not thrive in the chaos of this structure. Reason being is that this structure

encourages an environment of collaboration and teamwork as employees would be required

to coordinate their efforts and change their own roles to suit the demand of the situation and

some people may not think that it is their responsibility.

The cost of maintaining an Organizational Learning Environment would be the amount of

time that is spent on learning new ideas and any additional training even if they encourage

you to learn from your own mistakes and make it better it still takes time to achieve your set

goal, but you will ultimately reach it. The greatest benefit to me would be the ability of

constantly learning and experimenting with new things, to study customer habits to generate

new ideas and to be innovative in achieving organizational change.

I would love to work under a Organizational Learning Environment because I love the idea of

constantly learning new ideas and being able to build off of my failure which can potentially

bring success in a organization.
