COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides a background in the theory and practice of human resource management. It
covers the core areas of human resource management, mainly human resource planning,
recruitment, staffing, performance appraisal, training, labour relations, and compensation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, students will understand and be able to apply core concepts in human
resource management (HRM). More specifically, students will:
 Understand the importance of HRM, how HRM is linked to an organization’s corporate and
business strategy and recognize how global trends may influence an organization’s HR
strategy.
 Understand the legal framework (Quebec and Canada) of HRM.
 Be able to use job analysis to write job descriptions and use job design to reach
organizational goals.
 Be able to project organizational human resource needs and have a basic understanding of
how to plan an effective recruitment strategy and design a valid employee selection process.
 Be able to design, implement, and evaluate training programs.
 Be able to design, implement and evaluate performance appraisal systems and understand the
strengths and weaknesses of different performance appraisal processes.
 Understand the basic principles of compensation, the variety of compensation and reward
systems that are available and the basic differences between them.
 Understand the rights and obligations of employers and employees, and how these affect
discipline in organizations.
 Understand the importance of health and safety in organizations and be able to create a
working environment that promotes employee wellbeing and the basic principles of labor
relations.

COURSE MATERIALS

Textbooks:
1-Peacock, M, Stewart, E.B., & Belcourt M. Understanding Human Resources Management: A
Canadian Perspective. Nelson Education Ltd., Toronto.
2-MANA 362- Canadian edition: This open-source textbook has been created specifically for
this course.

COURSE EVALUATION

TeamWork (10% and 30%)


The teamwork will be an on-going assignment spanning all the semester. In teams of 4-5 you
will be responsible for two reports. The two reports will be worth 10% and 30% respectively. In
completing the assignment, be careful not to plagiarize the work of others (see “Academic
Integrity”, below)

Exams (3 X 15%)
The purpose of the quizzes is to ensure that you have a good grasp of the field of human resource
management. They will focus on all the chapters covered in the class. Exams will be cumulative
and conducted in the class.

Participation (15%)
The quality of this class will depend on your contribution. Therefore, I expect you to be prepared
for each class by reading the assigned chapter/document and complete the various assignments
during the classes. More importantly, your contribution to class discussions will be main
determiner to get full points.

SUCCESS POLICY

In order to pass this course, you must collect at least:


• 50 percent of TeamWork 20 points
• 50 percent of Exams 22.5 points
• 50 percent of Participation 7.5 points
If you fail to achieve any of them, you will fail regardless of your total grades!
