Course Description:

This course is designed to provide a broad foundation on Business Analytics to MBA students. The course begins with various descriptive analytics and
visualization techniques to handle and analyze various data forms relating to business. At the next level, the course deals with hypothesis testing which
helps in business decision making. Each session will help the students to understand the concepts, techniques and their applications using Excel and/or
R software.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course a student is expected to:
 Demonstrate relevant quantitative capabilities in frameworks, tools and techniques for objective decision making.
 Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical concepts of the functional areas of business management and their relevance in a changing business
environment
 Apply knowledge that relates theory with practice in the field of management and business administration
 Think through a problem creatively and generate a set of alternatives
 Exhibit critical thinking skills by evaluating and selecting feasible alternatives leading to improved organizational performance
 Choose the best alternative for better business outcomes through data analysis.
 Interpret the research output of different research analysis (carried out using Excel and R) in the business context
 Develop capabilities in different tools and techniques of quantitative methods to augment learnings in other courses like Managerial Economics,
Operations Management, Business Analytics II, Marketing Analytics, Marketing Research, Portfolio Management, Financial Econometrics etc.

The course will be driven through Excel and/or R software.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

 Develop a manager’s orientation and appreciation to evaluate different alternatives based on available data and select the best alternative.
 Make use of different quantitative techniques in solving the research and business problems
 Identify appropriate quantitative tools and techniques for a given situation to arrive at decision making

Expectations from Students


a. Students must report to the respective sessions well before the announced time. Latecomers will not be permitted to join the class after the
scheduled time. Even if permitted to attend, the attendance for that session will not be given.
b. Students should come well prepared to each class to be able to participate in class discussions. This includes reading the chapters, case studies
and other material indicated in the course handout for each class well prior to the class.
c. In the class discussion a student is expected to participate actively and contribute to individual and group learning. Active participation in class
discussions is important in the context of class participation evaluation.
d. Evaluation is a continuous process at IBS. Every student needs to be aware of the timelines given in the next section. Absence at any component
evaluation will mean non awarding of marks in that particular component.
e. Each faculty has been given a scheduled consultation hour. Utilize this time to meet the faculty and clarify doubts if any, seek explanations and
get mentored if needed.
