Lean Paper

1) The value stream map depicts the process of delivering value from NorEng Systems to its customer Sindh Motors. The required production rate, lead time, and takt time can be calculated from the information provided. 2) A mixed model assembly line produces 3 models (A, B, C) at different hourly rates. The problem involves constructing precedence diagrams, calculating minimum workstations, and using RPW to balance the line. 3) A company produces parts on 7 machines. The parts movement data is given and the most logical machine sequence must be determined.

MASTER OF ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (Weekend)

FALL SEMESTER EXAMINATION, 2020
Agile and Lean Manufacturing (IM-515)
Time 3 hours Max Marks: 60
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.

Q 1) NorEng Systems is a supplier of Sindh Motors Company and the following value stream map (VSM)
depicts the process of delivering value to its customer. If it is known that NorEng Systems works from 8:00 a.m.
till 5:00 p.m. with two 15 minute breaks for tea and lunch break of 1 hour duration and that a complete
product takes 1 ft of coil to manufacture, answer the following questions.

a) Required production rate =

b) Lead time =
c) Takt time =
d) Enlist any four problems which you would like to eliminate from this value stream (in the order of priority).
1 ___________
2 ___________
3 ___________
4 ___________
e) Name one lean tool (for each of the three processes) that you think would be most suitable for improvement:
Stamping =
Welding =
Assembly =
Q 2) Three models A, B, and C are to be assembled on a mixed model line. Hourly production rates for the three models
are: A, 15 units/hr; B, 10 units/hr; and C, 5 units/hr. The work elements, element times, and precedence requirements
are given in the table below. (a) Construct the precedence diagram for each model and for all three models combined
into one diagram. (b) Find the theoretical minimum number of workstations required to achieve the required production
rate. (c) Use RPW method to solve the line balancing problem. (d) Determine the balance efficiency for the solution in (c).
