Vocabulary What it means

Noise Loud and unpleasant sound.

Biodegradable Wastes like fruits and vegetable peels, paper and left over food generally rotten
wastes mixed with soil.
Non-biodegradable Wastes remain in the soil as they are for many years. Example plastic bags,

Pollutants The substances that cause pollution.

Environment The surroundings or conditions in which person, animal, or plant lives or

Deforestation Cutting down of trees in large number of trees
Afforestation Growing trees in large numbers is known as afforestation
Van Mahotsav It is celebrated every year in July for one week in India. Lakhs of trees are
planted all over the country.

Importance of trees
Learning objectives:
Define environment and importance of trees
Differentiate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes.

Activity 1
Make a poster on keeping our Earth green and clean in an A4 size paper and stick in note book.

Importance of trees

How to Save Trees:

1. Avoid products made with palm oil.
2. Use less paper.
3. Buy recycled paper products.
4. Go for cloth products over paper when possible.
5. Push your local government to do more for trees
6. Look for volunteering opportunities to plant/protect trees
7. Use LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) for cooking.

Q. Differentiate between biodegradable and non- biodegradable wastes.

and left over food generally rotten mixed many years. Example: plastic bags, glass,
with soil. bottles.
• Can be decomposed by microorganisms • Cannot be decomposed by microorganisms
easily easily.
• Will decompose and is used as compost for • Most of the non-biodegradable waste is non-
cultivation purpose recyclable waste making them extremely
harmful and dangerous for the environment
and human health.

Pollution

Ans: By using both sides of each sheet of paper we can reduce paper consumption and we are saving trees
which is good for our environment.

2. Why should we grow more trees?

Ans: we should grow more trees because:
• Trees are called lungs of the Earth.
• Trees give us oxygen take co2 from the atmosphere making the surroundings clean.
• Trees give us fruits, vegetables, medicines, rubber, cereals, paper and gum.

ASSET Based Question

1. Forests are called the “lungs of nature” why?
a) Bring down the Co2 level in the atmosphere
b) Bring down the oxygen level in the atmosphere
c) Maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
d) Increase the level of Co2 in the atmosphere.
Value Based Question
1. Reema’s mother separates biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes at home. She hand overs
both the wastes to the sweeper so that he can dump them accordingly. What value can you learn
from Reema’s mother?
a) Environmental awareness
b) Carelessness
c) Negligence towards the environment
d) None of the above.
