Math Sba Cover Page

This document contains a student's primary mathematics SBA on the topic of analyzing vehicle traffic data. It includes three parts: data collection from tallying vehicles over three days, data presentation through graphs and analysis of ratios, and data interpretation including calculating fractions, percentages, and estimating daily vehicle counts. The student observed the most common vehicles were SUVs and cars, and that the total vehicles passing each day varied between 49 and 76 over the 15-minute observation periods.

Acknowledgement

I am extremely grateful to the individuals that assisted with the preparation and execution of my Primary
Mathematics School Base Assessment. A heartfelt thank you to my teacher, Ms. Lewis, for her
encouragement and support in completing this assessment. I would like to express a special thank you to
my mother, Ms. Sasha Quashie, for her assistance and dedication towards the gathering of data, putting
the information together and ensuring the assessment was printed and completed on time. Once again
thank you both.
Introduction
This assessment gives information on the frequency of different type of vehicles passing a particular area
within a 15 minute period on three separate days. It gives a clear look on the movement of different types
of vehicles.
I chose topic 1 – Vroom into stats because statistics, computation and number concepts are topics that I
enjoy in mathematics. These topics help to present factual data by using data collection methods, analysis,
and ways to effectively present results in a simple way for clear understanding. These topics also help me
develop my logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Part Two: Data Presentation & Analysis

A. Analysis of data one

 Type of vehicle that passed by most frequently – SUV
 Type of vehicle that passed by least frequently – Motor Cycle
 Total number of vehicles that passed by during the 15 minute period – 52 vehicles
 Ratio of cars to SUV – 17:19
 Ratio of two-wheeled to four or more wheeled types of vehicles – 5:47

B. Comparing the number of vehicles that were observed over three days:
 The same number of vehicles do not pass by each day. Each day a different amount was
observed.
 On each day, SUV were consistent with being the dominant vehicle.
 The second dominant vehicle was car.
 On the first and second day of data collection, the same amount of JeSUV was observed.

Part Three: Data Interpretation
A.
 The fraction of vehicles that passed by that were buses is 20
177
Working

Number of buses that passed by over a three day period

Day one = 6 buses
Day two = 11 buses
Day three = 3 buses
Total = 20 buses

Number of vehicles that passed by over a three day period

Day one = 52
Day two = 76
Day three = 49
Total = 177

Fraction 20
177
 Percentage of bicycles that pass by over a three day period is 2.82%

Working

Number of bicycles that passed by over a three day period

Day one = 5 bicycles
Day two = 0 bicycles
Day three = 0 bicycles
Total = 5 bicycles

Number of vehicles that passed by over a three day period

Day one = 52
Day two = 76
Day three = 49
Total = 177

5 / 177 = 0.0282
0.0282 x 100 = 2.82

Percentage 2.82%
B. Calculating the mean
Mean number of vehicles = Total number of vehicles over the three days
Total number of days

Mean number of vehicles = 177 = 59

3

C. Day one
52 vehicles in 15 minutes
52 x 4 = 208 vehicles in one hour
208 x 24 = 4,992 vehicles would pass by in one day (24 hours)

Day two

76 vehicles in 15 minutes

76 x 4 = 304 vehicles in one hour

304 x 24 = 7,296 vehicles would pass by in one day (24 hours)

Day three

49 vehicles in 15 minutes

49 x 4 = 196 vehicles in one hour

196 x 4 = 4,704 vehicles would pass by in one day (24 hours)
