MODULE 4-5
What is Sexuality or Sexual Orientation?

Activity 1: Instructions: List down as many words as you can that you think are associated with the
term “SEXUALITY”. Afterward, from the list, you have listed, choose four (4) words, 2 words that
denote positive action and the other 2 words for negative action, and explain each.

 desire  sex
 lust  sexiness
 passion  sexual urge
 sensuality  diversity
 behaviors  personal
 sexual orientation  homosexual
 family  self-esteem

2 words that denote positive action

1. Family
- Some people have a hard time accepting others who are different from themselves. If
someone gives you a hard time about your sexuality, it’s good to talk to someone about it
which is your family or anyone you considered family, where the family in sexuality is a
term widely used by LGBTQIA individuals to identify other LGBTQIA people. You don’t
need to deal with it by yourself. This is the reason why family denotes a positive action
associated with the term sexuality.

2. Diversity
- Diversity denotes a positive action associated with the term sexuality because human beings
have diverse sexual identities and personal choices, and it is an important part of who we
are. We need to accept and respect our sexuality and the sexuality of others without
judgment, shame, violence, or discrimination that creates positive sexuality through
diversity.

2 words that denote negative action

1. Lust
- Lust is a word that denotes a negative action associated with the term sexuality because it
means having a strong feeling of longing for something or someone that if one cannot
control issues may arise or can cause more serious things such as abuse, rape cases, and
other forms of inappropriate human sexual conduct.
2. Homosexual
- It has been advised to use "gay" or "lesbian" to describe people attracted to members of the
same sex because of the clinical history of the word "homosexual," it is aggressively used
by anti-gay extremists to suggest that gay people are somehow diseased or
psychologically/emotionally disordered. This is the reason why the word homosexual
denotes a negative action associated with the term sexuality.

Activity 2: Instruction. Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Is sexual activity essential to personhood? Why or why not? Is this true throughout a person’s
life cycle?
- Sexual activity refers to your sexual thoughts, feelings, attractions, and behaviors toward
other people. Sexual activity in personhood, in my opinion, can be essential and not in
different ways. It is necessary for a way that married couples will have babies to have a
happy family through sexual activity, but it is unnecessary for personhood if you only
practice it for self-desire and other reasons.

2. Is nonmarital (premarital, extramarital) sexuality becoming more acceptable in our society?

How is this (acceptability or non-acceptability) be expressed?
- The current views regarding premarital are becoming more acceptable in our society. How
would I say this? It is because of what I have observed in my surroundings, especially my
relatives that are living together but are still unmarried. On the other hand, extramarital
sexuality is still not acceptable in our society and is still considered morally wrong.
However, views about sex before marriage also differ significantly by race, age, gender,
education, and church attendance.

3. Artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy are recent practices related to
reproduction which do not yet common and are future directions for biological reproduction.
What are the implications of these practices for male and female sexuality and gender relations?
- Artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy are practices that helped to make
it possible for a couple to reproduce, to have a child, without normal sexual intercourse for
there are many couples, who encounter difficulties in having children through normal sexual
intercourse. However, those who are using this practice remove the natural function of a man
and a woman according to their sex. It removes the natural responsibility of a woman bearing
a child and the man to nurture his pregnant wife.

4. Sexuality underlies the world of work. Explore the areas where sexuality defines the work that
women and men do. Why are some types of work associated with women only? For men only?
For both men and women?
- Some types of work are associated with women only, for men only, or both men and
women because of the term "gender role," which refers to society’s concept of how men
and women are expected to act and how they should behave. As we grow, we learn how to
behave from those around us. In this socialization process, children are introduced to certain
roles that are typically linked to their biological sex. These roles are based on norms, or
standards, created by society.
5. Religious institutions and the state play a major role in defining sexual behavior. Should these
roles continue? Why or why not? What are the consequences of sexual behavior if the influence
of religion diminishes? Increases? Is state regulation decreased? Increases
- Religious institutions and the state play a major role in defining sexual behavior. I believe
that these roles should continue because, if not, immorality would be widely practiced and
serious problems may arise. They also serve as our guides to our sexual behavior so that we
are knowledgeable about proper and safe sex without abusing these behaviors.
- If the state and religions were more involved and increased their influence on sexual
behavior, then it will affect the natural role of sex in people. It will inhibit the natural
process of intercourse and procreation between a man and a woman. However, if the state
and religion also decrease their involvement in influencing social behavior, it would be
possible that nonmarital (premarital, extramarital) sexuality will become more acceptable in
our society, which it should not be, and it will create abuse of people in engaging in sexual
behavior in a harmful way. Overpopulation will happen, and an AIDS outbreak might be
possible.

Assessment

Instructions: Write an essay by answering the following questions:

The various forms of popular media are powerful mechanisms for shaping various values and attitudes.
Describe how popular media (print, radio, television, movies) portray aspects of sexuality. Are there
uniformities in these images? Are there contradictions? Does media mirror sexual practice? Or does the
media create it?

There is no doubt that lots of magazines, newspapers, online sites and TV are very popular,
which are playing a very important role in the context of human sexuality. It spreads the message of
social norms and helps in shaping the social identity that gives direction to people about what is
acceptable or not.
Studies suggest that the media do have an impact because the media keep sexual behavior on
public and personal agendas; media portrayals reinforce a relatively consistent set of sexual and
relationship norms; and the media rarely depict sexually responsible models. On television, sexual
content varies greatly by genre; sexual talk is more prevalent than depictions of sexual activity, and
references to sexual risks and responsibilities are minimal. Sexual imagery is also prevalent in music
videos, where the most frequent portrayals are of sexual and suggestive dance, sexual objectification,
and self-touching. This trend extends to video games, where women are underrepresented and, when
present, are much more likely than men to be shown with a sexualized appearance or in sexually
revealing clothing. You will notice that there is a uniformity and contradictions in these.

As a conclusion, it is both true that the media mirror sexual practice as well as that the media
create it because the media reflects society. However, the media can also shape values and norms by
editorializing in a way that reinforces the values and norms some people already have and by
introducing others to them for the first time.
