PROBLEM AND REASON OF SELECTING IT

NOWADAYS, we see that many of us are turning to drug addicts and due to which
our society is facing severe problems. How?

 People cannot work efficiently

 They fail to follow society rules and regulations

 Their social life is disturbed

 They fail to be a normal social being

 Due to drug addiction increase in crime occurs

 Their generation also get effected

 They cannot put up their whole potential to add to country’s economy.

BENEFIT OF RESEARCH

Normally, people who are not educated or are less concerned about their
lives lack the destructive effects of drugs on their lives. we would aware
people through our research that how people loss their live in doing
these activities and at the end of the day it all goes in vain and its their
family who suffers afterwards.
This research would help the drug addict people to realize their
responsibilities for their family and society, and the society would run in
a healthy environment.

1. BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION
1.1. What is Drug?
A simple, all-encompassing definition of a drug would be "a substance containing
chemicals which result in a specific physical or psychological reaction or
reactions." This, at least, is as much true of penicillin, a drug which has saved
millions of lives, as it is of cocaine--a drug which, especially in the latter part of
the twentieth century, has claimed a death toll in the hundreds of thousands if not
the millions.

1.2. What is Drug Addiction?

Drug Addiction has become a serious problem in our society now days, which
causes a destructive roll and adverse contribution to a person using drugs.
Many people starts drugs without knowing the harmful effects and time pass but
soon they get full physical dependency upon it. It not only destroys mental and
physical health but also social environment, too. It is the time that we must put in
all our efforts to fight against it which could be only possible when we all are well
aware of drugs and drug addiction itself.

1.3. Reason of Drug Addiction:

Many people use drugs just to escape physical an emotional discomfort and pain.
Drugs temporarily relax and enhance a bit confidence and feeling of depression.
They start smoking to deal with stress to enhance energy and confidence at school
or at home.
In some cases, they start using sleeping pills to take a constant sleep and start
taking painkillers allay their severe back pain. Using drugs for a long time brings
its own disasters in shape of major disturbance to normal daily life and
functionality. The drug hits their physical, psychological, social activities and
becoming more harmful as they increase the dose to overcome and find ways to
escape their all above mentioned problems.
Some of the causes of drug addiction can be as follows:-

 Lack of knowledge:

6
Most people who are addicted have less knowledge about drugs or its
consequences. Mean while awareness of education is less, as our religion Islam
never admires to use drugs.
 Easy Availability:
If government makes strict rules on such type of things it would and can be
vanished from our society. Easy availability makes everybody curious to buy such
drugs.

 Peer Pressure:
It is one of the major causes of addiction. Friends or company makes one good
or  bad.if friends are drug addict they will pressurize their non addict friends to
take drugs.

 Poverty and unemployment :

Poverty and unemployment is the major causes of addiction especially in the third
world’s countries. They cause depression and frustration and in order to get rid
from these tension people start drug addiction.

2. SIGNS OF DRUG ADDICTION

 Ignoring responsibilities at work, home and office, lost of interest in
activities that he used to get involved in his normal life, low performance
and involves in illegal activities.
 Lost of old friends due to sudden changes in mood, misbehaving attitude,
changes in normal habit schedule like eating and sleeping.
 Lack of interest in business; try to keep himself in isolation, demands for
money without giving any arguments sometimes develops stealing habits
too.
 Weight loss, reddish eyes, bad breath, less conscious about cleanliness and
lack of tolerance.
 Increase in drug quantity by the passage of time to get more and more fun
which leads to total dependency on drugs.
 Due to physical reaction and reduce to withdraw symptoms like restlessness,
hopelessness, anxiety, tension, physical pain, constipation when ever he
tried to reduce and quit drugs.

3. TYPES OF DRUGS
Hash (THC), heroin, cocaine, alcohol, opium, sedative pills,
tranquilizers, tobacco, marijuana and stimulants are the drugs commonly
used in Pakistan.

3.1. Stimulants (Stim-you-lants):

Sometimes called ’uppers’. These drugs stimulate the central
nervous system into working faster. The heart beats faster. Blood
pressure goes higher. It can be hard to get to sleep. The body is so busy
it sometimes doesn't feel hungry. These drugs include caffeine, nicotine,
amphetamines, cocaine and ecstasy.
 Caffeine: While it is consumed by many, coffee, tea and soda
drinkers, when consumed in excess this substance can produce
palpitations, insomnia, tremors and significant anxiety.
 Cocaine: A drug that tends to stimulate the nervous system,
cocaine can be snorted in powder form, smoked when in the form
of rocks (crack cocaine), or injected when made into a liquid.
 Nicotine: The addictive substance found in cigarettes, nicotine is
actually one of the most habit-forming substances that exists. In
fact, nicotine addiction is often compared to the intense
addictiveness associated with opiates like heroin.

3.2. Depressants (Dee-press-ants):

Sometimes called ’downers’. These drugs have the opposite effect to
stimulants. They slow down the central nervous system. The heart
beats slower. Blood pressure goes down. Breathing gets slower. The
body may feel relaxed. These drugs include alcohol, tranquillizers (tran-
kwill-eye-zers), cannabis, and inhalants (in-hay-lants) and solvents (like
glue).

9
 Alcohol: Although legal, alcohol is a toxic substance, particularly
to a developing fetus when a mother consumes this drug during
pregnancy.

3.3. Hallucinogens (Hal-loo-sin-o-jens):

Sometimes called 'psychedelic' (s-eye-k-a-del-ik) drugs. These drugs
alter how a person feels and thinks. They can have lots of different
effects on the mind. The senses - sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell -
may be affected, giving a false idea of what is happening around the
body.
 Sedative, hypnotic, or anti-anxiety drugs: As these substances
quell or depress the nervous system, they can cause death by
respiratory arrest of the person who either uses these drugs in
overdose or who mixes one or more of these drugs with another
nervous system depressant drug (like alcohol or an opiate).
 Sheesha or water pipe :
Sheesha іѕ аlѕο known аѕ water pipe or Hookah іѕ basically
smoking device in which smoke cooled and is filtered by water. A
recent study shows that sheesha is serious threat to the health of
teenagers especially the girls.

4. TEEN DRUG ADDICTION

The life decisions we make currently in our individual lives ultimately will affect,
be it better or for worse, the futures of our lives. For instance one who neglects to
learn how to read will be handicapped by their inability to read for the rest of their
life until they learn to read. Lack of curbing problems while they are still in their
growth stage can be tremendously more difficult to curb when the problems have
reached their maturity. For these reasons teens are at a unique time in their lives to
be able to change, if they are in the right situation with enough leverage for a
significant amount of time As their drug/alcohol use will ultimately still be in the
growth stage.
Drug abuse is getting more and more common widespread drug abuse may be
indicated by the fact that almost five percent of the adult population is using drugs
in Pakistan. As a proportion of drug abusers, heroin users have increased from 7.5
percent in 1983 to a shocking 51 percent a decade later in 1993.
I think some of the major reasons are that in Pakistan drugs like alcohol and heroin
are strictly prohibited but it’s available on a large scale and no one is checking over
them, it’s so obvious when such things are available easily so why won’t people
buy them? As it’s the COOL factor of the society know a days. So who is to blame
the youth, their families or the system? What I think is everyone has to contribute
their part.

The families who have parents addicted to alcohol or smoking tobacco should at
least avoid doing them in front of their children. Universities, Colleges and
Schools should conduct workshops telling kids that how much drugs and alcohol
can harm them, but most importantly when drugs will be banned strictly and will
not be easily available so the ratio of drugs abuse can come down to a large extent.

One of the best reasons to get a help for teens while they are still teenagers, beyond
being a very formidable time in a Childs life, is the consequences of inaction upon
future generations. Statistics have shown that instances of teen drug addiction run
in long chains from parents to children. This is why now is the time to either break
the chain of teen drug addiction or stop it from forming. No amount of hard work,
money, sacrifice is worth more than breaking a chain of substance abuse or
preventing one from forming.

5. DATA ANALYSIS

12
EXPLANATION OF GRAPH

According to the above graph people of age group between 18-20 are
highly engaged in drugs. But we see that as the age passes this ratio
decreases. we asked our sample group for the reason they said that the
reason might be the feeling of responsibility in parents that if they do not
stop how would they be able to stop their children.(90%).20% said this
might be due to the pressure or you can say love of their loved relations
that persuade them to leave this habit.(20%)
We conducted a survey of sample 100 to see how many people are
engaged in activities such as smoking and the most emerging drug
“sheesha”
About 70% of the people are drug addicts. we particularly centered our
survey on people who take sheesha or smoke and only 30% people are
not engaged in this activity.
We further found that 90% people are in the favor of the fact that a drug
addict can lead a successful life and only 10% are not in favor of it.
further more people get addicted to drugs highly through pressure by
peer group 60% of the people,20% smoke and take sheesha as a fashion
and only 10% are not in this category.
We than asked people ( our sample group) to suggest any replica of it
90% of people said that there is no replica of it but 20% of people gave
amazing answers .they said they might be persuaded by their loved ones
to leave this habit .and some people suggested that the government
should ban these things in our country and bring any substitute for it.

6. IMPACTS OF DRUGS USE

The impact of illicit drug use is widespread. It causes permanent physical and
emotional damage to user’s family and peers. Drug negatively impacts user’s
health and leads to disease. Many users died in young age because of overdose of
drug.

6.1. IMPACT ON FAMILY AND COMMUNITY:-

The family is often viewed as the basic source of strength, providing nurturance
and support for its individual members as well as ensuring stability and
generational continuity for the community and culture. The influence of peer
groups is stronger than of parents. Drug use by peers may influence greatly than
parents. The parents who are drug user influence their children. Women who are
not drug abusers may be affected by problems related to drug abusing men. The
problems of male partners may affect women in the form of difficulties in
interpersonal relationships, instability, violence, child abuse, economic insecurity,
deprivation of schooling and risk of sexually transmitted disease, including HIV
infection. Family becomes hostile to drug abuser because he demands for money
and sometimes even steal money and other household goods. Drug user always has
bad reputation in his neighbor and in peer group. Drug use causes quarrels in
family.

6.2. IMPACT ON HEALTH:-

Because of drug health problems disturbs family life and productive employment
and it also affect the quality of life and may threaten survival. Deaths as a result of
drug abuse are a major source of concern. Recent informal estimates are that
perhaps 200,000 drug-injecting-related deaths may occur per annum based on the
estimated size of the current world population of injecting drug abusers of
approximately 5.3 million. Substances commonly associated with drug abuse-
related deaths are cocaine, heroin, barbiturates and amphetamines. One of the most
visible impacts of harmful drug use is seen in the consequences of cocaine use on
newborn infants. Experts have found that cocaine-using pregnant women have a
higher rate of spontaneous abortion. Drug use decreases resistance to disease in
14
body. Drug use also damages the brain cells. Heavy use of some drugs can damage
the liver, lung, throat and stomach can be damaged by drug use too. Sharing
needles from injecting drugs is a major risk for getting diseases like Hepatitis C or
B or HIV, which are spread through blood-to-blood transmission.

6.3. IMPACT ON CRIME:-

Countries vary in the way they define crime. Crime and drugs may be related in
several ways, none of them simple. Illicit production, manufacture, distribution or
possession of drugs may constitute a crime. Drugs may be used to make money.
Drugs may be closely linked to other major problems, such as the illegal use of
guns, various forms of violence and terrorism. Researchers have found a close
connection between drug abuse, criminal behavior and social attitudes. Heroin
addicts are usually deeply involved in crime. A number of terrorists and organized
criminal gangs are involved in illicit drug trade. The drug user offences law for the
need of money to support continued use. Drug produces changes that increase
aggressiveness. Alcohol is the only one whose consumption has been shown to
commonly increase aggression.

6.4. IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT:-

The environmental impact of illicit drugs is largely the result of outdoor cannabis
cultivation and methamphetamine production. Many of the chemicals used to
produce methamphetamine are flammable, and the improper storage, use and
disposal of such chemicals that are typical among methamphetamine producers
often lead to fires and explosion. Additionally, the process used to produce
methamphetamine results in toxic chemicals--between 5 and 7 pounds of waste per
pound of methamphetamine--that are typically discarded improperly in fields,
streams, forests, and sewer systems, causing extensive environmental damage.
Environmental damage results from the way those crops are cultivated and
harvested.

6.5. IMPACT ON EDUCATION:-

Teens who abuse drugs have declining grades, a higher rate of absenteeism from
school and other activities, as well as an increased potential for dropping out of
school. Research has shown that a low level of commitment to education and
15
higher rates appear to be related to substance abuse among youngsters. Behavioral
problems may also interfere with the academic performance of youth who use
alcohol and drugs.

7. RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

 CONCLUSION:
Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug
seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to
those around him or her. Although the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for
most people, the brain changes that occur over time challenge a person’s self
control and ability to resist intense impulses urging them to take drugs.
Fortunately, treatments are available to help people counter addiction’s powerful
disruptive effects. Research shows that combining addiction treatment medications
with behavioral therapy is the best way to ensure success for most patients.
Treatment approaches that are tailored to each patient’s drug abuse patterns and
any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems can lead to sustained
recovery and a life without drug abuse.
Similar to other chronic, relapsing diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, or heart
disease, drug addiction can be managed successfully. And as with other chronic
diseases, it is not uncommon for a person to relapse and begin abusing drugs again.
Relapse, however, does not signal treatment failure—rather, it indicates that
treatment should be reinstated, adjusted, or that an alternative treatment is needed
to help the individual regain control and recover.

 RECOMMENDATION:
Development of advocacy strategies:
Some suggested strategies for future programs are the development of advocacy
strategies for programmers addressing treatment of drug dependencies as one of
16
the priorities within the health care delivery system and the development of
mechanisms for coordination and cooperation within private and public sector
organizations for delivery of drug treatment and rehabilitation services. In addition,
it is suggested that relevant organizations develop protocols and demonstration
projects for selected modalities, especially those for community-based service
delivery of drug treatment and rehabilitation programs. Other future programmers
could include the institution of multidisciplinary training about drug dependence
and addictive behaviors with special emphasis on treatment of problems arising as
a result of harmful use of drugs, and the development of programmers to meet the
needs of drug dependent prison inmates.

Drug for the drug:

What if science made a pill to protect us from addiction — keeping us from
smoking cigarettes, getting fat or abusing drugs and alcohol? According to
encouraging results from several lines of study, it seems that day may be closer
than we thought. Researchers in labs around the world are now developing
vaccines (not a pill, but an injection) to inoculate people against dangerously
addictive substances such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. Within "one
to 10 years, and closer to one year," says Dr. Frank Vocci, director of treatment
research and development at the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA),
scientists may produce a vaccine against cocaine — one of the more promising
areas of research — that can potentially help millions of addicts, two million in the
U.S. alone.

Treatment and Rehabilitation center:

There should be increase in the number of treatment and rehabilitation centers for
drug addicts. Treatment of drug addicts is a weak area and health department
should set up drug treatment wards in all major hospitals at divisional and district
levels and in all teaching hospitals. Anti-narcotics committees should be
constituted in every town to fight the
