HYUNDAI F5A51/A5GF1
SLIPS IN 3rd, 4th, 5th
COMPLAINT: Before or after overhaul, Hyundai vehicles equipped with the F5A51/A5GF1, may exhibit a
complaint of a flared 2-3 shift or slips in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear. This condition will get worse the
hotter it gets. It may also include P0733-735 Diagnostic Trouble Codes related to gear ratio
errors in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear. Note: this problem has shown up in 2007 Hyundai Sonata with
as little as 35k miles on it.
CAUSE: The cause may be, that the Reverse Piston, which houses the Overdrive Piston is cracked,
allowing Overdrive clutch pressure to leak causing the slipping condition in 3rd, 4th , 5th.
Refer to Figure 1 and note that the Overdrive clutch is applied in those ranges. See Figure 2
for the location of the Overdrive/Reverse Drum in the cross- sectional view. It may be noticed
when removing the Overdrive outer piston seal that the seal is damaged where it rides against
the inside of Reverse piston. This is caused by the crack. Refer to Figure 3 for a cross-section
of the Reverse and Overdrive piston showing the apply chamber of the Overdrive clutch and
where the crack typically is.

CORRECTION: To correct this condition, dis-assemble the Overdrive/Reverse drum as shown in Figure 4 and
replace the Reverse piston and Overdrive clutch piston seals.
