Module 3

There are two types of structures: statically determinate and statically indeterminate. Statically determinate structures satisfy conditions of equilibrium without additional equations. Examples include simply supported beams. Statically indeterminate structures require additional compatibility equations to solve for unknowns due to factors like continuous beams, temperature changes, or lack of fit. Indeterminate structures are further classified by type and degree of indeterminacy.

 Statically Determinate Structures:

Those structures in which the following conditions are satisfied are called statically
determinate structures.
1. Conditions of equilibrium are sufficient to find the unknowns of the system
2. Bending Moment and shear force is independent of the cross sectional area of the
components and flexural rigidity of members
3. No stresses are caused due to temperature changes
4. No stresses are caused due to lack of fit or settlement
5. Example of determinate structures are: simply supported beams, cantilever beams,
single and double overhanging beams, three hinged arches, etc.

 Statically Indeterminate Structures:

1. In addition to the equilibrium equations, additional compatibility equations are
required to solve the unknowns
2. Bending Moment and shear force is independent of the cross sectional area of the
components and flexural rigidity of members
3. Stresses are caused due to temperature changes
4. Stresses are caused due to lack of fit or settlement
5. Examples of indeterminate structures are: fixed beams, continuous beams, fixed
arches, two hinged arches, portals, multi-storeyed frames, etc.
