Introduction
Social Media are widely used by Grade 10 students in University of Cebu. This study
investigates the purposes for which social media sites are used and their impacts on social media
language learning, social interaction, and academic performance. The Social media's widespread
use and consumers' seemingly quick access has had unmatched effects on University of Cebu
students in Grade 10. Students have adapted to specific skills and complementing social media
benefits for their study. Despite Facebook's dominance as the preferred social network, there is
a paucity of measurable research on the impact of the social media on students in Grade 10 at
the University of Cebu. This makes sense, because it is challenging to measure how social
media language impact the effectiveness of academic performance. In terms of the students,
learning development or academic performance results. A direct relationship exists between
social media language usage and the academic performance of students in Grade 10 students of
University of Cebu. However, the more negative aspects of technology advancement have led to
problems like the loss of real-life values, particularly among students who make up the majority
of users communicating on social media.

Social media language places a strong emphasis on creating and reflecting social
connections between individuals who have similar hobbies or interests. Students are enticed to
forgo their schoolwork and reading sessions in favor of conversing with friends online because
there are so many social networking sites available online. Many students are addicted to the
current internet trend, which includes Facebook, Twitter, etc. Social media is now a common
possession among teenagers and students. The reason most of them perform badly in school
might not be far- fetched. While many minds might be quick to blame the poor quality of
teachers, they might have to think even harder, if they have not heard of the Facebook frenzy
(Oche & Aminu .2010). Olubiyi (2012) noted that these days’ students are so engrossed in the
social media that they are almost 24 hours online. Hence most students’ academics suffer
setback as a result of distraction from the social media. In (Obi, Bulus, Adamu & Sala ‘at 2012),
it was observed that the use of these sites also affects students’ use of English and grammar.

The students are accustomed to writing in brief sentences in chat rooms, students often
forget to employ these shorter forms in formal settings. They use things like 4 in place of for, U
in place of You, and some is use Forda in place of "For the" and this could affect their class
assessment. Although studies show that students use social networking sites like Facebook for
entertainment, to kill time, to reconnect with old friends or make new ones, social media has
been acknowledged as a significant educational resource in the modern era (Ellison, Steinfeld,
and Lampe 2007). Social media websites, claim Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), draw
students' attention before diverting it to improper and non-educational activities like pointless
chit-chatting. On the other side, it was found by (Liccardi, Ounnas, Massey, Kinnunen, Midy, &
Sakar. 2007) that the students are socially connected to one another for the purpose of
exchanging their daily learning experiences and engaging in discourse about a variety of
subjects.

This shows that social networks are beneficial for the students as it contributes in their
learning experiences as well as in their academic life. Trusov, Bucklin, and Pauwels (2009)
emphasized that although social media has been increasingly popular and widely used over the
past few years, it is still exceedingly dangerous for teenagers. The significance of social
networking sites in students' lives is demonstrated by this statement. Students highly suggest
social networking websites to keep in touch with peers in order to be informed and alert,
according to a survey by Lenhart and Madden (2007). Online interpersonal relationships may
take longer to develop than face-to-face interactions, but once they do, they have the same
impact as face-to-face contact, according to the social information processing hypothesis of
interpersonal communication. Accordingly, the more students use social media, the more they
have an impact on how they approach their studies since friends on social media start to
influence one another.

In conclusion, social media language has brought impact on students especially in their
communication skills. The more they integrate in social media the more impact they get from it.
In which it can cause or developed negative feedback of the students. From the way they adapt
the language that influenced them from formal to informal usage of words.

Theoretical Background of the Study

Impacts of Social Media Language Learning: A Review Literature (Yonghong Zhou,

2021.)

The collected information indicates that most students believe talking to native speakers
via social media motivates them to practice and effectively improve their speaking proficiency.
To understand language acquisition, Hymes proposes the concept of communicative
competence and argues that, in addition to language rules, it is equally essential to comprehend
the rules of how to use language in an appropriate way. In other words, language learners need
to know “when and how to say what to whom”. Though there is still a death of studies
investigating how social media influences language learners’ speaking proficiency, a growing
body of research with different study methods has been noticed. Most of them notably explore
the educational affordances of social media as output spaces. According to the self-reported
information, the function of social media as a practice tool has been highlighted.
The emergence and rapid growth of social media captured the attention of second
language researchers. In fact, an increasing body of studies in various fields, perspectives and
methodologies have been conducted and generated fruitful implications. Social media are
identified as “a group of Internet-based applications theta build on the ideological and
technological foundations o Web 2.0 ad allow the creation and exchange of User Generated
Content”. The definition indicates social media is often regarded as an umbrella term with many
sub-genres. Noticing students are unable to produce coherent writings owing to apprehension,
and lack of ideas. That is to say, social media can be supportive b affording collaborative
writing platforms for language learners to brainstorm, compose and revise thoughts.
Though a plethora of research regarding social media impacts on language learning skills
has been conducted, empirical studies focusing on reading are still limited. Having said that, in
a survey conducted by Kabilan et al., the collected data reveal reading information from social
media generally increases learners’ reading motivation, and many learners claimed those online
reading activities improve their reading skills. The finding suggests that social media provide
learners with texts and information of a wide range, and thus may lead to reading skills
enhancement, for instance, skimming. In terms of writing quality, by developing a longitudinal
study for a Facebook-assisted writing program, Shin concludes that Facebook facilitates author-
reader interactions and allows students to assess and comment on others’ writings and thus
provides learners with opportunities to modify their original works and improve grammar,
structure, content, organization and word choice.
In conclusion, the research aforementioned reveals the positive impacts of social media
on language skills development and confirms their efficiency by offering authentic linguistic
resources, collaborative platforms and practice opportunities. O use language appropriately.
Learners need to be acquainted with the social norms of the target language. Due to its great
significance, several studies intended to explore the role of social media in facilitating language
learners’ socio-pragmatic competence enhancement from various perspectives.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ITS INFLUENCE ON VOCABULARY AND LANGUAGE

LEARNING: A CASE STUDY
(Zahirrah Zainal, Noor Hanim Rahmat Published 21 September 2020)
Social media is a prominent medium of communication and used by all generations. Besides
being used as a tool of communication, institutions have integrated social media such as
Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube as learning tools to deliver new information and connect with
students. The popularity that social media has gained over the years has become a debate
whether social media platforms are effective teaching and learning tool. This study aims to
explore the influence of social media on interest in language learning skill. Besides, this study
investigates how these platforms cause positive and negative influence on language learning.

Social media platforms are perceived as effective tools in language learning. The impact of
social media on second and foreign language acquisition found in a study conducted by
Alharthy and Alfaki in 2014 revealed it is more effective to learn via social media compared to
traditional learning. In addition, social media provides students in the usage of words an
authentic real-life situation. The use of social media also provides positive effects to students as
pronunciation improvement and vocabulary enlargement resulted from the use of social media
( Abbasova, 2016).

Different social media platforms serve different features and services. Due to the
distinctness, it affects how people communicate and speak within these platforms. For example,
Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Twitter is used for quick reading of information, thus
encouraging the use of limited word for tweet. Meanwhile Facebook provides much longer
writing of messages. On the other hand, Instagram is primarily picture and video media
platform which has no limitations in terms of messages length ( Mansor, 2016 and Sebah Al-
Ali, 2016).

Based on the social constructivist model, the process of language learning involves students
to participates actively in their own language process. Social constructivist promotes interaction
between individuals in the society. Vygotsky (1987) reported that, cultural and social play
important part in intellectual development. Social media, however, has the tendency to influence
students’ English negatively. There is now a trend in social media that could menace literacy
ability and skills of students due to the use of abbreviations and uncommon jargon in writing
( Craig, 2001).
In conclusion, The growth of social media creates internet slangs, which as known as jargon
slangs used on these sites. To express themselves in quick manner they used these jargons.
However, it can bring negative impacts to many social media users. The usage of internet slangs
such as LOL (laugh out loud), BTW (

by the way), FOR DA (for the), Ferson (person) bring worries to some as it might affect the
English vocabulary. Though, there are numbers of advantages using social media such as
increasing motivation and developing social skill. The existence of social media has helped
people all over the world stay connected by online interaction. This kind of interactivity offers
learners to experience the meaning, making with original content and people which are the
native speakers.

English Used in Social Media and Its Effect on the HSC Level Learners

A new trend of using Social Media or Social Networking Sites has been recently
highlightedin this technology era. Social media influences people’s lives in many aspects
includingeducation and English language learning. It has made an effect on the English
languageeither in a positive way by adding new words to the dictionary a negative way by
misusingthe grammar and using incorrect abbreviated words.Nevertheless, there were cases
where others experienced improvement in their readings skillsas a result of participation on
social media networks. Also, respondents shared ideas, discussed and shared examination
questions among themselves on social media networks. The study recommended the promotion
of social media usage for academic purpose, counseling for addicted students and the use of the
right grammar and spelling when participating on social network
The purpose of this study is to examinewhat the effect of using Social Media has on the
English language learners and see if it wasmore positive than negative and vice versa as well as
to understand the students’ perceptions on how the use of social networking sites help to
facilitate or inhibit their English writing skills. To achieve the objectives of the research, the
study used a mixed method approach which involved the survey of students in high schools.
The study revealed that majority of respondents used Whatsapp and Facebook for making
friends and chatting. In addition, majority of respondents experience d negative effects such as
poor grammar and spelling.
The definition of social media is “therelationships that exist between network
people”(Walter & Riviera, 2004). In 2016, Merriam-Webster defined social media as “Forms
ofelectronic communication (such as Web sites for social networking and microblogging)
throughwhich people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages,
etc." Inthe last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically. Thanks to the invention of
socialmedia, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information,
pictures andvideos at a truly astonishing rate. When “languages” and “social networks” areput
side by side, nothing interesting will be observed. But there were studies stated that, the usage of
socialnetworks was strongly bonded with users’ English proficiency.
In conclusion, despite the huge amount of languages on this planet, English is still the most
commonly used language when it comes to internet. The tremendous growth of social networks
was accompanied by a series of new jargons called internet slangs. This language is commonly
used on the internet, mainly to quicken communications or express emotions. The usage of
Internet slangs is undeniably useful, but it also brought negative impacts to some users. On the
other hand, some researchers stated that, social networks bring more good than harmhar.
The Internet revolution changed the information world with regard to sharing, speed, storage and
retrieval of information in whatever form regardless of the person’s location.Through the
Internet a number of web technologies emerged, and one technology that is making waves with
regard to information sharing and communication are the social medianetworks. The evolution
of social media has cut across all facets of society with its positive and negative impacts. Social
media has transformed and impacted on communication, learning, research and education in
general. Among the vast variety of online tools which areavailable for communication, social
networking sites (SNS) have become the most modernand attractive tools for connecting people
throughout the world. Internet has slowly transformed from something we want, to something
we need. Another problem is students from high school level often used Internet slangs during
conversation. Instant messaging are so widely used. When the users are comfortable with
Internet slangs, they will subconsciously or accidentally use it on somewhere where Internet
slang is not allowed, such as formal writing.
