GLOBAL HISTORY 9 ENDURING ISSUE PROJECT

Task:

1. Choose an enduring issue.

2. Choose TWO examples of this enduring issue, one from our studies and one from the past ten
years.
3. Find one reliable source for each example chosen. You cannot use Wikipedia or a textbook as a
source. Minimum amount of sources is two but you can use more.
a. Example: one source for Crusades and one source about the war in Afghanistan
4. Read the sources in order to determine what the source tells us about each example of the
enduring issue.
5. Complete a final paper (70%) AND a poster (30%)

Guidelines: (Complete both)

I. Final paper:
 Section I – Introduction
 Identify and define the enduring issue you chose, and introduce the two
examples.
 Section II – Source 1
 Explain how the enduring issue has affected people or has been affected by
people (using the source about the Crusades)
 Section III – Source 2
 Explain how the enduring issue has affected people or has been affected by
people (using the current source about Afghanistan)
 Section IV – Conclusion
 Bring the examples of the enduring issue together. How has the enduring issue
continued to be an issue or changed over time?
 Works cited page included
 Format & length: type your paper in 12-point font and double space with one-inch
margins. Do not add extra spacing. NO MORE THAN 600 WORDS

II. Create a poster that defines and describes the enduring issue, give information about the two
examples that you used in the paper, and creatively present the enduring issue and its
impact. Use visuals to make your poster appealing (pictures, maps, graphs, charts).
Works Cited page instructions (*you may use NoodleTools for this)

When to Use a Citation within your essay/ paper:

1) All direct quotes
2) Any uncommonly known facts - facts that can’t be found in multiple sources
3) Opinions - someone else’s opinions, ideas, or research (includes material you have paraphrased)
How to Format a Citation:
As you are conducting your research make sure to compile your bibliography. When you are writing your
paper and you use information or a quote from one of your sources, place a citation at the end of the
sentence. In parenthesis, take the first word that is listed for that source in the bibliography. If it is a
print source, put the page number in the book where that information is found. Since the citation is part
of the sentence, the punctuation goes after the citation.
Examples:

Book, author listed (Manchester, 27).

Book, no author (Canterbury, 52).
Title of Article (“Chaucer,” 105).
Internet, author listed (Smith).
Internet, no author listed (“Feudalism”).

Sample paragraph showing an in-text citation:

In 1346, medieval Europe experienced a devastating outbreak of the bubonic plague. The spread
of this disease, originally known as “the Great Dying”, devastated the continent until 1352 and led to the
deaths of about 20 million people (McEvedy 118). During the early middle ages, many Europeans lived on
isolated manors and interacted very little with outsiders. Over time though, the development of the
commercial revolution led to the growth of towns and trade. This increased trade connected European
towns to port cities in eastern Europe and the middle east, ultimately linking them to the Silk Road. It is
believed that this growth of trade brought the pandemic into Western Europe and had devastating
effects in the crowded, dirty towns of Western Europe (Langer 114).
