Introduction
My name is Chantal Wilson. I am a student of Happy Grove High
Evening School, situated in the breath-taking parish of Portland,
Jamaica. My pursuit in life is to be a Health Inspector.

The focus of this SBA is primarily centered on the CSEC

committee choosing an intra-mural event, then all members
must plan, organize and implement by choosing one role only.
Our project was the Seaside Primary School Inter-house 20/20
cricket competition –project #2.

The rationales for the choice were:

 This project lends itself to flexibility; in the sense that all

committee member could choose from the wide range of
roles.
 The project was stage in close proximity to our school; it
was easy for member to travel to the location quickly –
timesaving.
 The committee wanted to continue with the brain-child of
our predecessor and to challenge ourselves to improve on
their work.
 Equipment was readily available; hence we were able to
save on cost.
 We wanted to do a real life event to challenge ourselves
with real life expectation – meeting deadline.
In this project, my role was a Refreshment coordinar.

Background on cricket

Cricket is a bat and ball game played between two teams with eleven
players on each side. Play takes place on a large grassed area with a
pitch cut in a position near the centre of field. The pitch is a flat, rolled
and finely cut area on which the battle between the batsman and the
bowler takes place. The first cricket match on record took place in
1646.
Modern cricket is a team sport originating in England and popular
mainly in areas that formerly made up the British Empire .The major
test are England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia , India , Bangladesh,
South Africa, New Zealand , Zimbabwe and the West Indies. The
majority of the terms used in cricket are originated from England and
Australia; however these terms generally have been adopted by a
majority of playing nations and their cricketers.

Cricket may be classified into different categories such as test, one-

day and now the new twenty-20 which was introduced by England at
the country level by the England Wales cricket board in 2003 whereas
many countries like Australia ,South Africa and the West Indies
adopted it where it is now at the international level.

3
Specific Rules of Twenty-Twenty
Cricket

The twenty-20 cricket competition has adopted rules from one- day
cricket with few exceptions.

 A no ball is penalized with a free –hit on the following delivery in

which the batsman can be dismissed only by a run-out, hitting the
ball twice, obstructing the field or handling the ball. Also no
changes in the field are allowed during the free –hit.
 Each bowler can bowl a maximum of four over’s per inning.
 During the first six (6) over’s only two fielders can remain on the
outside the thirty yard circle and for the remaining five (5) over’s
fielders can be outside the ring.
 There can only be five fielders on the leg side at any time.
 Umpires have power to award five (5) runs in case of wastage of
time by any team.
 The batting team gets a bonus of six runs if the bowling team
does not start their twentieth over before the seventy-fifth (75th)
minute. The main purpose of this strict rule is to make the
bowling team complete their inning within the allotted time of
seventy-five minute (75 min).
 The very special rule of twenty-20 cricket is the bowl-out rule
that applies in the case of the tie. As for this rule five (5) bowlers
from each side delivers one delivery each with one (1).

Information on Project selected
Background on Seaside Twenty-20 Cricket.
Seaside Primary which is located in East Portland was founded by the
Quakers society and was built on the Quakers land. The school has a
great history on the legendary game of cricket. Although the school
started with a small amount of students cricket was like a culture to
the Seaside Students in the earlier years. Though the school played
many matches the first competitive cricket match played by the
Seaside Primary students was in 1993 where they played for the crib-
cement trophy where they came out victorious and lift the title. This
victory gave the seaside cricket team courage which stands out today
in the seaside primary students who participated in the lovely game of
cricket. In 2005 the seaside cricket team won the parish cricket (For
primary schools) competition where they went to the next round
where they lost the match. This however didn’t create a set back in
the student who participated in the game of cricket whereas the
talents of the students extremely tremendous as it was in the twenty -
20 cricket competition. The twenty-20 cricket competition was
introduced to the Seaside Primary students by the Happy Grove CSEC
committee where the students as well as the principal welcomed this
new venture which will play another positive role in the school’s
future and development of cricket.

Information Role Selected

Description of task
In this committee I choose the role of a Refreshment Coordinator. This
role is essential in several ways as listed below:

1. Carefully follow the advice of the organizing committee

2. Prepare a list of the items need to prepare refreshment

3. Prepare a list of the persons to be served refreshment.

7. Serve the refreshment to officials and athletes

8. Fill water bags to serve to athletes while at play.

My role started from the initial stage of planning as follows:

9
BEFORE THE EVENT
Before the event there were several committee meetings held by the
CSEC Sports Committee. At about the second meeting, we all choose
our desired role. I choose the role of a refreshment Coordinator,
because I like handling food. Several persons in the committee choose
that particular role. We then had to from our sub-committee - the
refreshment committee. In our first committee meeting, we chose a
Chief Refreshment coordinator, her name is Anthonetha Rose.

Our first task was to make up our checklist with the items, quantity
needed to do our task (please see exhibit # 2 –checklist). Our next task
was to check for the availability of the kitchen, so we met with the
Home Economics Department, Mrs. Bailey who allowed us access to
the kitchen. We then decided among ourselves who would take the
different provision to prepare the meals I decided to take items to
prepare the juices (Please see exhibit #3 –). After making our enquiry,
we compared information and make references on our checklist where
inadequacies were concerned. We then make the necessary
arrangement with the Home Economics department for the day when
we would prepare the refreshments and we check the checklist to see:
1 If the items were indeed available for use to serve as refreshments.

2 If the igloos were in good condition or needed cleaning.

To see where they are for quick and easy retrieval on the day when
needed. (Please see exhibits #6 - Picture profile of pre event
preparation.)There were several other committees that we had to
speak with; the technical manager was one such group. 10
Because they had the task of taking the equipment such as
the igloos to the work site. All these communication was
done orally.

Finally, when we were finished with our pre preparation, we

wrote a memorandum to the Competition Manager, stating
our readiness for the competition (Please see exhibit # 4
Memorandums to competition Manager).

11
During The Event
We were the second committee to be present at the field. We started
our task at 7:30 am which include:

 We use our checklist to make sure we have every thing we

need. (Please see exhibit # 5-Refreshment l Manager’s Log).

 Filling the water bags for athletes and officials

 Preparing the fruit juice put it in a large igloo with lots of ice.

 Helping my other colleagues sliced up bread for the sandwich

 Help with packaging of the meals

 Served refreshment water and fruit juice throughout the

matches.

 Assisted my colleagues in handing out the meals after the

match.

12
AFTER THE EVENT
We stayed and enjoyed the fest ivies of the award
presentation of the players, while the ceremony was in
progress; we did our task of logging the names of the
persons (officials) who were fed so that everyone could get
something to eat...

When we had gathered all our belongings, we all met. The

CSEC Sports committee evaluated our strengths and
weaknesses as a team. And we did well. We then decided to
do a little extra by cleaning up the water bags from the venue
as no special teams was assigned that particular task.

13
Personal Reflection
I am truly elated and excited about the role I did. It was a new venture
for me and the knowledge gained and experience garnered was
tremendous.

As a member of my Committee and sub-committee, I really got the

opportunity to experience the real meaning of the word TEAM –
Together, Everyone Achieve Much. I really value the team spirit as
everyone pulled together to get the task done. The whole aspect of
team’s specialization really allows everyone to achieve much in a
short period of time. Respect and tolerance were two areas in my life
which has improve significantly as I was always a loner and an
impatient person.

I also enjoyed the fact that I was able to give of myself voluntarily to
the young and to their development, the smile and joy on their face to
me that was like spiritual fulfillment to my soul. I felt valued, also my
contribution to the team’s effort. Time was of the essence and this
was an important factor to get my task done in order for the other
team members to keep a very tight schedule.

As a person who wants to continue in the world of sport to develop

my career, I feel the experiences I observed among my colleagues
and what I have done will mold my future Endeavour to be a
professional of integrity, determination and understanding towards
other people’s behavior and concerns.
