Festus Claudius McKay was born in Sunny Ville, Clarendon Parish,

Jamaica, on September 15, 1889. His mother and father spoke
proudly of their respective Malagasy and Ashanti heritage. McKay
blended his African pride with his love of British poetry. He studied
poetry and philosophy with Englishman Walter Jekyll, who
encouraged the young man to begin producing poetry in his own
Jamaican dialect. He is best known for his novels and poems,
including "If We Must Die," which contributed to the Harlem
Renaissance.

Background of "If We Must Die"

Claude McKay's "If We Must Die" was written as a response to

the Red Summer of 1919. The term Red Summer describes the
summer at the end of World War I. Many Black soldiers returning
to the nation were met with racism and violence, and McKay wrote
the poem to reflect the experiences he witnessed during that time.
Red Summer is named such due to the violence and blood spilled
during that time. Black soldiers' claims to citizenship and rights
resulted in anti-Black violence that swept the nation, confronting
the soldiers who were just returning from war and attempting to
rebuild their lives. During the Red Summer, there were more than
twenty-five white-supremacist violent attacks in major cities
throughout the country.
When If We Must Die was written, McKay was working as a
waiter on the railroad. He experienced major and minor instances
of racism on a constant basis. After the poem was written, it
became an anthem of sorts to those who were working as a
resistance to the anti-Black violence in the United States. The
poem's political implications set it up to become a central part of
the Harlem Renaissance, a culturally significant revival of
African-American arts originating in New York. The poem became a
call to action for unity in the protest for human dignity for African
Americans.

“If We Must Die” Summary

If we have to die, let's not die like pigs, hunted and trapped in
some dishonorable place, while all around us hungry hunting dogs
bark like crazy, mocking us for our terrible fate. If we have to die,
let’s die with honor, so that we don't sacrifice our valuable blood
for nothing. Then even the bad people we rebel against will have to
honor us, even though we're dead. Oh fellow sufferers, we have to
fight our mutual enemy. Even though we are seriously
outnumbered, let's show them how brave we are. And for all the
blows they give us, let's return one killing hit. Who cares if our
open graves are right in front of us? We’ll fight these murderous
cowards like men, our backs against the wall, fighting back even as
we die!
