Assignment#01

This document provides 8 fluid mechanics problems involving concepts like density, viscosity, pressure, velocity profiles, and capillary action. It asks the reader to calculate values like mass, force, speed, stresses, and diameters using given fluid properties and equations of motion. The problems cover a range of fluid situations including liquids, gases, droplets, and flows between surfaces.

Assignment # 01 Issue Date: 2079/10/16
Due Date: 2079/10/23

Assume appropriate/exact value of data where necessary

1. Calculate the density, specific weight and weight of one litre of petrol of specific gravity =
0.7. (Ans: 700 kg/m3, 6867 N/m3, 6.867 N)

2. A fan delivers 4 m3 of air per second at 20oC and 1.25 bar. Calculate the mass of air
delivered taking molecular weight of air as 28.97. Also determine the density, specific
volume and specific weight of the air being delivered. (Ans: 1.485 kg/m3, 14.57 N/ m3,
0.673 m3/kg)

3. At a depth of 8 km from the surface of ocean, the pressure is stated to be 82 MN/m2.

Determine the mass density, weight density and specific volume of water at this depth. Take
density at the surface ρ = 1025 kg/m3 and bulk modulus of elasticity K= 2350 MPa for the
indicated pressure range. (Ans: 1060.76 kg/ m3, 10406 N/ m3,0.000943 m3/kg)

4. A 15 cm diameter vertical cylinder rotates concentrically inside another cylinder of diameter

15.10 cm. The both cylinders are 25 cm high. The space between the cylinders is filled with
liquid whose viscosity is unknown. If torque of 12 Nm is required to rotate the inner cylinder
at 100 rpm, determine the viscosity of the liquid. (Ans: 0.865 NS/m2)

5. If the velocity profile of a fluid over a plate is parabolic with vertex 20 cm from the plate
where the velocity is 120 cm/sec. as shown in fig 1. Calculate the velocity gradient and shear
stresses at the distances of 0, 10 and 20 cm from the plate surface, if the viscosity of the fluid
is 8.5 poise. (Ans: 12/s, 6/s, 0/s, 10.2 N/m2, 5.1 N/m2, 0 N/m2)

6. The air resistance on a 200g ball in free flight is given by FD = 2 x 10 -4 V2, where FD is in
Newton and V is in meter per second. If the ball is dropped from rest 500 m above the
ground, determine the speed at which it hits the ground. What percent of the terminal speed is
the result? (Ans: 78.7 m/s, 79.5 %)

7. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled with
glycerin. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5 m 2 between the
two large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s if:
i. The thin plate is in the middle of the two plane surfaces, and (Ans: 40.5 N)
ii. The thin plate is at a distance of 08 cm from one of the surfaces? (Ans: 45.54 N)

Take the dynamic viscosity of glycerin = 0.81 Ns/m2

8. Find the smallest diameter of a manometer tube such that error due to capillary action in the
measured gauge pressure of 100 N/m2 is less than 5 percent. Take σ = 0.073 N/m, θ = 0, w =
9810 N/ m3 (Ans: 5.84 cm)
