COURSE PSCI 505: Use of Technology in Teaching Science

DEVELOPER AND THEIR

BACKGROUND
COURSE DESCRIPTION This course explores technology that has been designed for use in
the classroom. The utilization and evaluation of various
technologies and their appropriateness for the Science curriculum
will be emphasized. Students will identify, develop and apply a
variety of technological skills congruent to their educational
technology philosophy. This course also explores how technology
may be used as a tool in the 21st Century Science classroom to
facilitate changes in the ways teachers teach and students learn,
and ultimately to stimulate positive changes in education. It also
examines how educators can increase their own productivity by
using technology for communication and collaboration among
colleagues, staff, parents, students, and the larger community.
Students will examine the benefits and possible drawbacks of
technology use in their classroom and learn how to integrate
technology effectively into their teaching as a means to promote
student learning.

TITLE Module 12: Presentation of Different Interactive Learning Strategies
using Technology in Teaching Science Part 1

I. RATIONALE Interactive learning is a pedagogical approach that

incorporates social networking and urban computing into course
design and delivery. Interactive Learning has evolved out of the
hyper-growth in the use of digital technology and virtual
communication, particularly by students.

Beginning around 2000, students entering institutes of

higher education have expected that interactive learning will be an
integral part of their education. The use of interactive technology in
learning for these students is as natural as using a pencil and
paper were to past generations.

The Net Generation or Generation Y is the first generation

to grow up in constant contact with digital media. Also known
as digital natives, their techno-social, community bonds to their
naturalized use of technology in every aspect of learning, to their
ability to learn in new ways outside the classroom, this generation
of students is pushing the boundaries of education.

The role change from keeper of knowledge to facilitator of

learning presents a challenge and an opportunity for educators to
dramatically change the way their students learn. The boundaries
between teacher and student have less meaning with interactive
learning.

INSTRUCTION TO THE USERS This module includes various activities to define and
identify different interactive learning strategies using technology in
teaching science. In this module, students will apply different
application software in an interactive learning strategies.

PRE-TEST Instruction: The teacher will let the students do the brainstorming
activity in which they will give at least 2 to 3 words that they can
relate with the word INTERACTIVE and how do they come up with
that word.

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this module, the students are expected to:

1. Define the different interactive learning strategies using

technology in teaching science
2. Apply different application software in an interactive learning
strategies
3. Identify the different interactive learning strategies using
technology in teaching science

III. CONTENT The preparatory learning activity is intended to be meaningful and

A. PREPARATORY useful to students.
ACTIVITIES Video Presentation
This will give them the idea of the lesson by asking them to answer
the guide questions after watching the video. The students will list
down all the things that they were able to learn in watching the
video.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL Developmental Activity:

ACTIVITIES AND
DISCUSSION PROPER Instructions: The activity will be done by pair. The teacher will give
the following terminologies below. Then, the students will generate
their idea and share it in the class.
Terminologies:
 Simulation
 Online White Board
 Gamification
 Gathering Feedback
 Digital Field Trip

Discussion Proper:

The use of digital media in education has led to an

increase in the use of and reliance on interactive learning, which in
turn has led to a revolution in the fundamental process of
education. Increasingly, students and teachers rely on each other
to access sources of knowledge and share their information,
expanding the general scope of the educational process to include
not just instruction, but the expansion of knowledge.

Slideshow Presentations With Multimedia

Text-only slideshow presentations are behind the times

due to its monotonous content delivery. Also, it’s evident that
slideshow presentations are already a part of your educational
curriculum. Therefore, if you add a variety of multimedia elements
to the performances, it could capture the attention of students for a
long time.

Video Conferencing

With the power of video conferencing apps like Zoom,

Skype, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and VSmart, our ability to
connect with people all across the world has never been better or
less costly. Teachers have been using Zoom and similar tools to
being guest lecturers, experts, students, and others into the
classroom for years.

Integrating Social Media

Because students already spend so much of their time on

social media, integrating its use into your classroom is among the
most innovative ways to use technology in the classroom by
connecting students to curriculum, classroom resources, and one
another. Create a Facebook group specifically for your class where
you post discussion topics or develop unique classroom Twitter
hashtags students can use to discuss lessons or ask questions in
Science.

Gamification/Gamified Learning

They say learning by playing is the best way to understand

a complex concept. This applies true to all the students. When a
complex concept is taught in the form of games, it sets the
foundation right. Teachers can ask students to form pairs or groups
and encourage them to collaborate with each other while learning
by playing. This also encourages teamwork among students, which
is an essential skill when they want to grow up in their career.

Incorporating Student Input & Gathering Feedback

There are many applications that allow students to provide

live feedback. A lot of them can be used from smartphones. You
can also gather feedback by creating a “back channel” using
Twitter.

Using Simulations

Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world

process or system over time. Simulations require the use of
models; the model represents the key characteristics or behaviors
of the selected system or process, whereas the simulation
represents the evolution of the model over time.

Online Interactive White Boards

There are several good free interactive whiteboards

available online. If you have a computer and a projector, you can
make them work a lot like a “smart board”. Some of these
applications even allow students to log on online and
collaboratively edit content.
Digital Field Trips

An increasingly popular, useful, and cost-effective tool for

teachers searching for new ways to use technology in the
classroom is taking digital field trips. Google Streetview and other
similar apps allow you to virtually explore parks, forests and even
national and international landmarks from the comfort of your
classroom. Virtually experience the view from Mayon Volcano and
other natural tourist attractions to get students excited to learn
about a location or subject and extend learning beyond the page.

C. CLOSURE ACTIVTIES After the discussion, the teacher will ask the students to give other
examples of interactive learning strategies using technology in
teaching science.

IV. SYNTHESIS / Slideshow presentations with multimedia, video

GENERALIZATION conferencing, integrating social media, gamification, incorporating
student input, gathering feedback, using simulations, online
interactive white boards and digital field trips are different
interactive learning strategies using technology in teaching science.
The use of digital media in education has led to an increase in the
use of and reliance on interactive learning, which in turn has led to
a revolution in the fundamental process of education. Increasingly,
students and teachers rely on each other to access sources of
knowledge and share their information, expanding the general
scope of the educational process to include not just instruction, but
the expansion of knowledge.

V. EVALUATION Activity: Short Essay

Instruction: Write a short essay on the importance of online
learning in the times of COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
VI. ASSIGNMENT / To increase the learning capabilities of students, they will be given
AGREEMENT a task to search different application software in an interactive
learning strategies in teaching science.
