SPP 201-202

The document discusses standards of professional practice (SPP) for architects. SPP 201 outlines 4 parts of pre-design services: introduction, scope of services, manner of providing services, and compensation. SPP 202 outlines 7 parts, including scope of services from project definition and schematic design through construction. Project classification depends on complexity. The owner is responsible for their representatives and liable for breaches. Additional services like models require separate payment. The reflection emphasizes the importance of considering legal and professional standards in architecture practice.

REFLECTION PAPER

The term "Standards of Professional Practice" refers to a group of papers, such as the

Standards of Practice and Essential Competencies for Dietetic Practice, the Code of Ethics,

practice guidelines, Regulations, and Bylaws, that outline the moral and legal criteria for

professional practice. In SPP 201, it has 4 parts and those are introduction, scope of pre-design

services, manner of providing services, and method of compensation.

In the introductory part, involving an architect is essential in every project since it will

provide critical objective analysis, setting parameters to optimize building needs in relation to

available resources and attendant constraints. With this, it will be in favor for the client since

he/she will benefit from it if an architect is involved in the early stages of the project. As for the

scope of pre-design services, it covers a problem-identification process through actions that

would enable the architect to initially envisage a variety of architectural and related solutions.

With this, it includes consultation, site selection and analysis, space planning, space

programming, etc. As for the manner of providing services, the architect can provide services in

a field wherein he/she is knowledgeable about in order to execute his/her skills when designing.

With that being said, a proposal for pre-design services is needed that includes scope of work,

manner of payment, owner’s responsibilities, and other conditions of services. Lastly, the method

of compensation wherein the compensation of an architect is based on its talents, skill,

experience, and services.

In SPP 202, it has 7 parts and those are introduction, scope of services, manner of

providing services, project classification, method of compensation, owner’s responsibilities, and

other conditions on services. In the introduction, this is where the owner outlines his
requirements to the architect before doing the project. With this, it covers analysis for the

requirements, preparation of instruments that will be used for service, and supervision of the

project. This is called the regular design services of the architect. For the scope of services, this

is where the project begins wherein the architect analyses the needs in the project definition, then

he/she will have a schematic design leading to conceptual plans, and when the schematic plans

are approved, the architect will now begin the design development documents which includes

plans, elevations, sections, etc. Next, there will be a contract wherein it hires the contractor by

bidding, before the construction phase. As for the project classification, the project is classified

based on its complexity to satisfy the client's expectations while adhering to technical,

functional, financial, and aesthetic limitations. In an owner's responsibilities, it is any act,

omission, or liability that constitutes or results from a breach by the owner, architect, contractors,

or other representatives are subject to any obligation of indemnity. Lastly, other conditions on

services are like additional conditions wherein architects can offer additional services such as

scale model, walk-thru presentations, and 3d models. These services have additional costs that

are paid separately by the owner to the architect.

All these are important when an architect is designing a project. In all honesty, before, I

did not think there are numerous things that we should consider when practicing architecture. I

only thought we would only design the project then gain profit from it. With this lesson, I now

have a bigger picture when practicing architecture that is legal and this will help me when I

graduate and have a job.
