About the Event:
Safety in Design is the integration of control measures during the design phase (of a product or asset) to control hazard exposure
throughout the life of the asset or product, from manufacturing through to end of life. Safety should and generally does begin at the
design phase. The safety decision made during design about the asset or product are what ultimately impact hazard exposure during the
Hosted by:
life of the asset or product. To address these issues the Engineered Safety Group in Adelaide was formed in 2013 to discuss and promote
the tools, practices and techniques of safe design. During the breakfast session, former and current Chairs of the Engineered Safety Group
will provide an insight into Safety in Design – what it means and what it takes in terms of commitment and leadership.
7:00am –
8:15am What will you take away from this event?
This interactive breakfast session will allow you ‘the participant’ to:
• Hear from those working in the safety in design area.
• Learn about the tools, practice and techniques that can be used to help with improving safety in design.
• Ask questions from experts in the area.

Title: Using GBD Study to address injury decision-making to save lives: hits and misses experience from India in use of big data.
The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study has produced sub-national estimates for a variety of injuries in India under the India State-
Level Burden Initiative, a collaboration between a large number of stakeholders including Indian government institutions. This
presentation will use examples of GBD estimates on suicide deaths and road traffic injuries in India to describe how these data were
utilised for action, and the barriers and facilitators to this utilisation, in order to highlight how these estimates started conversations
on the availability and adequacy of the national administrative data on injuries, and the lessons learnt to make injuries more visible to
policy makers to save lives. The presentation will also highlight the intricacies of using big data on injuries to gain attention of policy
makers for action in comparison with some other diseases in developing country settings.

Title: Capital Ideas: Mobilising finance for prevention at scale
Over recent decades, financial markets have over-emphasised financial return and externalised social and environmental costs. A shift
in economic understanding, increased focus on what it will require to address climate change, inequality other social and environmental
issues and innovations are driving change in investment. This keynote will provide insight into what’s happening and why, how it can
open new solutions and mobilise capital for safety and prevention – and what it will take to harness this potential.

Art Gallery of SA - Critical Observation for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion hosted by Dale Hanson

Please meet at the Adelaide Convention and Exhibition Centre, North Terrace at the bottom of the escalators, going up to main entrance @ 12:30pm. The tour is due to
commence at 1:00pm at the Art Gallery of SA.
People can either catch the free tram down North Terrace to the Art Gallery or walk the 850 metres (10 mins) to the Art Gallery
There will be no entrance charge however, participants are welcome to make a donation to the Art Gallery, if they wish.

A comprehensive understanding of the problem you are trying to solve is a necessary precondition for the design of relevant, effective and sustainable injury prevention
and safety promotion interventions. This involves observation and interpretation of all relevant evidence, not just numerical and statistical but qualitative, to gain the
wisdom required to empathically interpret the meaning of what is being observed in the context of the target population.
12:30pm -
2:30pm While we like to think we are objective, the way we think determines what we look for, which determines what see, which determines how we think. We need to break
free of our preconceptions by consciously developing and refining our skills in critical observation and empathic interpretation of the world we live in and seek to change
for the better.

Join us in this workshop at the Art Gallery of South Australian where we will work together to develop and refine our skills of critical observation as we enjoy and interpret
the gallery’s extensive art collection and discover what it tells us about the way Australian’s have thought about themselves, their livelihood, their environment and their
culture for the last 65,000 years of human habitation. We may also spot some longstanding injury and safety issues along the way. Most importantly, we hope this quiet
moment of reflection about our shared humanity will help us reinvigorate and reimagine ourselves and reconnect with our colleagues.
