Identifying Parallel, Intersecting and Perpendicular Lines

This document is a lesson plan for a mathematics class on identifying parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines. The lesson plan outlines objectives, subject matter, materials, procedures, and an evaluation. The procedures include a review game to identify different types of lines, a motivation activity imagining lines formed during a flag ceremony, and an enrichment activity where students draw different pairs of lines using a ruler. The lesson aims to teach students to describe and draw parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines and appreciate their real-world applications.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics IV

Duration: 40 minutes
CONTENT STANDARDS
Demonstrates understanding of the concepts of parallel and perpendicular lines, angles,
triangles, and quadrilaterals.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Is able to construct and describe parallel and perpendicular lines, angles, triangles, and
quadrilaterals in designs, drawings and models
LEARNING COMPETENCY
Describes and draws parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines using ruler. (M4GE-IIIa-12.2 )

I. Objectives:
At the end of the 50 minutes lesson the pupils are expected to:
1. describes and draws parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines using
ruler.
2. appreciate the importance of the different lines in real life situations.
II. Subject Matter:
Topic: Identifying parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines.
Reference: K to 12 Curriculum Guide, LM Math 4 page 156-157.
Materials: pictures, ruler, manila paper, pentel pen
Strategy: games, small group activity
Value Focus: orderliness
Procedure:
a. Drill:
Identify whether the following is a point, a ray, line segment or a line.

b. Review:
Game “What am I”
 I have an exact location in space. I am represented by a dot. (point)
 I have no endpoint and I can go on and on in opposite direction (line)
 I start out at a point and can be extended in one direction. (ray)
 I am a part of a line with 2 end points (line segment)

c. Motivation:
Show picture or imagine yourselves in front of the flagpole forming lines for the flag raising
ceremony.
 How should you form your lines?
 Why do we always have to form our lines in an orderly manner?
 What will happen if we don’t form our line properly?
 What should we always remember in forming our lines during flag ceremony?

d. Presentation:
Have a game on “Forming Lines” Let them form different kinds of lines depending on the
instruction given.
 Line 1 will form 2 straight lines
 Line 2 will form 2 lines that meet at the center
 Line 3 will form 2 lines that show square corners.
“You’ve just played “Forming Lines”
The illustrations show the lines that you formed”

e. Discussion:
Different Types of Lines
A. Parallel lines – are lines that do not meet
B. Intersecting lines – are lines that cross each other
C. Perpendicular lines – are lines that intersect and form square corners.

f. Enrichment Activity:
Tell whether the following are parallel line, intersecting lines or perpendicular lines.

Group activity;
Using a ruler, draw each pair of lines in the given statements.
Group 1 - Line AB and line CD are parallel lines.
Group 2 - Line EF and line GH are perpendicular lines.
Group 3 - Line IJ and line KL are intersecting lines. They intersect at point M.

g. Generalization:
Remember that, parallel lines are lines that do not meet. Intersecting lines are lines that cross
each other. Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect and form square corners. We can use
ruler and set square in drawing different types of line.

III. Evaluation:
Direction: Identify the given pair of lines as either parallel lines, intersecting lines, or
perpendicular lines.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Draw three objects on each line.

8. Parallel line 9. Intersecting line 10. Perpendicular line

1. Assignment: Answer Math 4 page 157 letter B.

Using the figure below, answer the questions that follow.

1. How many lines are there in the figure?

2. What are the intersecting lines?
3. What is the point of intersection of line Cl and Al?
4. Which lines are parallel?
5. Which lines are perpendicular?
