Problem Set CO2

1. The document provides 10 problems related to classifying frames as statically determinate, indeterminate, or unstable and calculating shear, moment, and stress values for beams, bolted and welded connections. 2. Problems involve classifying frames using given equations, drawing shear and moment diagrams, and estimating allowable bending moments and stresses in beams, bolts, rivets, and welds. 3. Calculations are to be shown in a test booklet with final answers summarized on the first page.

Problem Set (Strength of Materials)

Write your solutions in test booklet. Summarize/List your final answers on the first page of the testbooklet.

1. Frames are classified either as statically determinate, indeterminate and unstable. Analysis of frame
depends on this classification; thus it is basic to classify first under which the frame belongs. Using
the given equation, classify each frame and if statically indeterminate determine the degree of static
indeterminacy. Where: m = member Values of ec
3m + r < 3j + ec à statically unstable frame r = reaction internal hinge = 1ec
3m + r = 3j + ec à statically determinate frame j = joints internal roller = 2 ec
ec = equation members meeting @ an
3m + r > 3j + ec à statically indeterminate frame
of condition internal hinge (ec = m-1)

2. Draw the shear and moment diagrams of the following beams.

(a) (b)

(c) (d)

A. R = 12.5, Mmax = 125/6kN/m . B.

C. RL= 125kN, RR = 75kN; Mmax = 150kN/m D. RE=35kN; RB=45kN; Mmax =
3. A steel scaffold tube has an external diameter of 5cm and a thickness of
0.5cm. Estimate the allowable bending moment on the tube is the
bending stress is limited to 100MPa.
4. A light alloy I-beam has a depth of 10 cm and breadth of 5cm.
Thickness of breadth is 0.625 and web is 0.475. If bending stress is
not to exceed 150MPa in tension and compression, estimate the
greatest moment which may be applied about the principal axes of
the cross section.

5. A T-section of uniform thickness of 1cm has a flange breadth of 10cm and an overall depth of 10cm.
Estimate the allowable bending moments about the principal axes id the bending stress is limited to
150MPa.

6. A steel strip of cross section 5cm X 1.25cm is connected by 2 bolts to two copper strips, each 5cm X
0.9375cm. Show that neglecting friction and deformation of the bolts, a pull applied to the joint will
be shared by the bolts in the ration 3:4. Assume E for steel is twice that for copper.

7. A bracket is bolted to a vertical stanchion and carries a vertical

load of 50kN. Assuming that the total shearing stress in a bolt is
proportional to the relative displacement of the bracket and the
stanchion in the vicinity of the bolt, find the load carried by
each bolts.

8. Two plate each 1cm thick are connected by riveting a single strap plates through 2 rows of rivets in
each plates. The diameter of the rivets is 2cm, and the distance between rivet center along the
breadth connection is 12.5cm. Assuming the other unstated dimension are adequate, calculate the
strength of the joint per meter breadth in tension allowing
75MPa shearing in the rivets and a tensile stress of 90MPa in
the plates.

9. A bracket plate is welded to the face of a column and carries

a vertical load P. Determine the value P such that the
maximum shearing stress in the 1cm weld is 75MPa.

10. Two tie bars are connected together by

0.5cm fillet welds around the end of 1
bar and the inside of a slot machined in
the same bar. Estimate the strength of
the connection in tension if the shearing
stress in the welds is limited to 75MPa.
