Topic: Damped Vibrations
1. Find the equation of motion for the system in Figure 1,
when (a) ξ = 2.0; (b) ξ = 1.0; (c) ξ = 0.3, if the mass m is
displaced by a distance of 3 cm and released.

2. A vibratory system has mass 3kg, spring stiffness 100 N/m and damping co-efficient 3 Ns/m. Determine (a)
damping factor; (b) the natural frequency of damped vibration; (c) logarithmic decrement; (d) the ratio of two
consecutive amplitudes; (e) number of cycles after which the original amplitude is reduced to 20%.
3. Derive the equation of motion for the system shown in Figure 3(a) and 3(b). Find critical damping coefficient

4. A gun barrel of mass 600 kg has a recoil spring stiffness of 294000 N/m. If the barrel recoils 1.3m on firing,
determine (a) the initial recoil velocity of the barrel, (b) the critical damping co-efficient of the dashpot which is
engaged at the end of the recoil stroke; (c) the time required for the barrel to return to a position 5cm from the
initial position.
5. In a spring mass dashpot system k = 30 kN/m, m = 100kg, and the damping provided is only 25 % of the
critical value. Determine (i) the damping ratio (ii) the critical damping coefficient (iii) the natural frequency of
damped vibration (iv) the logarithmic decrement (v) the ratio of two successive amplitudes.
6. A vibrating system consists of a mass of 30 kg, a spring of stiffness 20 kN/m and a damper of damping factor
0.25. Calculate (a) the critical damping coefficient, (b) the natural frequency of damped vibrations, (c) the
logarithmic decrement, and (d) the ratio of two successive amplitudes.

7. A torsional pendulum with a disc of moment of inertia as 0.05 kg-m2 immersed in a viscous fluid. During the
vibrations of pendulum the observed amplitudes on the same side of the neutral axis for successive cycles are
found to decay 50% of the initial value. Determine (i) logarithmic decrement, (ii) damping torque per unit
velocity, (iii) the periodic time of vibration, (iv) the frequency when the disc is removed from the fluid.
Assume G = 4.5x1010 N/m2; d = 0.10 m; l = 0.5m; MI of disc = 0.05kg-m2.
8. A body of 5kg is supported on a spring stiffness 200 N/m and has a dashpot connected to it which produces a
resistance of 0.002N at a velocity of 1cm/s. In what ratio will the amplitude of vibration be reduced after 5 cycles.
9. A vibrating system consists of a mass of 30 kg, a spring of stiffness 20 kN/m and a damper of damping factor
