API 5L X52 pipe also called L360 Pipe, X52 (L360) named by minimum yield strength 52 Ksi (360 Mpa). It’s a medium grade in API 5L
and ISO 3183 specifications, used for oil and gas pipeline transmissions.

API 5L X52 Pipe Types

Ranges by Product Specification Level: PSL1, PSL2, Sour Services

API 5L X52 PSL1, for the pipes in common delivery condition of As Rolled.
API 5L X52N/M/Q, for PSL2 pipe with delivery condition of N, M, and Q.

API 5L X52NS/MS/QS, for PSL2 pipes with sour services.

Suffix Letter Means

R: As rolled

rolled, Normalized formed, Normalized
N: Normalizing
Q: Tempered and quenched

or thermomechanical formed
M: Thermomechanical rolled
S: Sour Service

Ranges by Manufacturing Types

Seamless: Includes hot rolled seamless and cold drawn seamless.

ERW: Electric Resistance Welded, OD up to 24 inch.
DSAW/SAW: Double Sub-merged Arck Welding, substitute
welding methods than ERW for larger diameter welded pipes.
LSAW: Longitudinal Sub-merged Arc Welding, also called JCOE pipe, OD up to 56 inch.

SSAW / HSAW: Spiral Sub-merged Arc Welding, or Helical SAW, OD up to 100 inch.

Under X52 seamless pipe type, API 5L Grade X52 or L360 steel pipe chemical content is same with API 5L grade X42 or L320.

To be specified in details: Maximum content for C ≤ 0.28%, Mn ≤  1.4%, P  ≤ 0.030%, S 0.030%, V+Nb+Ti ≤ 0.15%; Copper maximum is
0.50%, nickel maximum 0.50%, chromium 0.50%, Molybdenum 0.15%.

It shall be noted that,

For grades higher or equal to X52/L360, these elements Cu, Ni, Cr shall not be added on any purpose.

For 0.01% reduce of the specified maximum content of C, an increase of 0.05% of Mn is allowed, until maximum of 1.65%. (This rule is
applied for grades equal to and higher than Grade B or L245, but lower or equal to X52 or L360)

API 5L X52 (L360) PSL2 the maximum chemical content is different than PSL1; As well as the mechanical strength, is more strictly.

API 5L X52 Pipe Pressure Rating (Mechanical Strength)

API 5L grade X52 (L360 pipe) the yield strength minimum at 52220 Psi 360 Mpa, it’s the meaning that we call this grade in the API 5L
X52 or L360. Tensile strength is 66700 Psi and 460 Mpa. X52 performance is better than Grade X46, X42, and Grade B. It is a second big
requirements in oil and gas pipe systems.

Either x52 pipe in seamless or welded (ERW, LSAW), the pressure ratings, tensile strength and yield strength is the same

In case the working conditions require bigger pressure, we will have to increase the wall thickness of the steel pipes, or use higher grade in
API 5L.

Test Requirements:
Hydrostatic Test: 100% hydrostatic test without leakage through the weld seam or the pipe body required. Connections or joints not need
hydrostatic test if the pipe sections used were successfully tested.

Bend Test: No cracks should be occur in any part of the sample or opening of weld.

Flattening test: Flattening test used to prove the pipe performances under deformation. It shall show the resistance to longitudinal
cracking and circumferential cracking, including internal and external defects.

It shall be perfored to ERW pipes which diameters above 12.75 inch;

For pipes OD/WT > 10, there shall be no opening of the weld before
the distance between the plates is less than 30% of the original OD.

Guided-bend test: Fracture completely; Reveal any cracks or ruptures in the weld metal longer than 3.2 mm, regardless of depth. Or
reveal in parent metal, HAZ or fusion line longer than 3.2mm or deeper than 12.5% of wall thickness.

CVN impact test: (Required PSL2 pipe, for seamless shall be tested with pipe body, for welded tests including pipe body, weld seam and
heat-affected zon HAZ tests)
DWT test: (Required for PSL2
pipe)
