LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The students shall be able to learn about the aims and objectives of Trade
Union.

Contents:
Objectives of Trade Unions:
A Trade Union is an organisation of workers, acting collectively, to seek to protect
and promote their mutual interests through collective bargaining. Following are,
generally, the objectives of trade unions:

1. Ensure Security of Workers:

This involves continued employment of workers, prevent retrenchment, lay off or

lock-outs. Restrict application of “fire” or dismissal or discharge and VRS.

2. Obtain Better Economic Returns:

This involves hike in wages at periodic intervals, bonus at higher rate, other
admissible allowances, subsidized canteen and transport facilities.

3. Secure Power To Influence Management:

For promoting mutual interests through collective bargaining, the united voice of
workers can better influence their Management.
This involves workers’ participation in management, decision making, role of
union in policy decisions affecting workers, and staff members.

4. Secure Power To Influence Government:

This involves influencing the government to pass pro-labour legislation, which

improves working conditions, safety, welfare, security; retirement benefits of
workers and their dependents; and seeks redressal of grievances as and when
needed.
 In another way, we can see that the Trade Unions have twin Objectives: (1)
Economic and (2) Non-Economic.

1. Economic Objectives may comprise:

a. To secure for workers fair wages

b. To secure better and more fringe benefits
c. To safeguard security of job of employees
d. To secure better working conditions
e. To improve productivity
f. To secure opportunities for growth and development of employees
g. To seek opportunities for promotion, training and so on

2. Non-Economic Objectives may include:

a. To instill in its members a sense of social responsibility.

b. To influence the socio-economic policies of the community through civic

participation in their formulation at various levels.

c. To contribute towards community development.

d. To strengthen political power of the workers.

e. To render social service.

f. To promote national integration; and so on.

According to the First Five Year Plan (1951-56), Trade Unions should –

(a) Present plans to workers so as to create enthusiasm among them for the
plans.

(b) Exercise utmost restraint with regard to work stoppage.

(c) Formulate wage demands, which are attuned to the requirement of
economic development of the nation in keeping with the principles of
social justice.

(d) Assume greater responsibility for the success of productive efforts.

Thus, trade unions aim at not only protecting and promoting economic, social and
political interests of their members, but also at contributing towards betterment of
the community.

Summary:
It is clear from above analysis that the Trade unions are organizations of all
categories of employees and are formed as per the provisions of labour legislation
to secure their common interests and well being; and to ensure the safety, security
and welfare of the working class of people mostly employed in factories, mines,
and plantations, etc. Actually, the objectives of trade unions are closely connected
with the objectives of social justice in the realm of industry and labour.
