TES1000

This engineering specification outlines the requirements for applying a calcium modified zinc phosphate pre-treatment, also known as a light phosphate, to metal substrates. The pre-treatment facilitates rubber to metal adhesion, assembly, or corrosion resistance. It specifies that the substrate must first be cleaned through a double caustic wash and acid pickle. The pre-treatment process then applies a zinc phosphate coating between 200-400 mg/ft2 to ensure complete and uniform coverage. Verification requirements include checking the coating weight periodically and comparing lab samples to production parts to ensure specifications are met.

PRE-TREATMENT

Title: METAL PRE-TREATMENT TES Number: 1000 TES Rev. Level: B

CALCIUM MODIFIED ZINC PHOSPHATE
(LIGHT PHOSPHATE)
Purpose: Reason for Revision:
Specification for the pre-treatment of metal to ECR 773
facilitate rubber to metal adhesion, assembly or
enhance corrosion resistance.
Prepared by: Roger Cassell Approved by:

Date: July 9, 2002

Application Area
COMPLETE AND UNIFORM COVERAGE.
Substrate Preparation:
CLEANING
PRE-TREATMENT TYPE,
SPECIFICATION
MECHANICAL CHEMICAL
The cleaning process is a Zinc phosphate with coating
double caustic wash and acid weight with the following
pickle before phosphate pre- specification:
treatment or an approved 300 mg/ft2± 100 mg/ft2
alternate process. The process (200 - 400 mg/ft2)
time must be such that uniform (min 2g/m2)
phosphate coating and the
coating weight is achieved.

Verification requirements:
1. ZINC PHOSPHATE wt./area, Q-Panel or Per ASTM B767 Once Per Shift or Titrate Once Per
Shift.
2. Required Documentation: where applicable
3. Q-PANEL vs. PART ZINC PHOSPHATE wt/area COMPARISON FOR PPAP SUBMISSION
AND SEMI-ANNUAL VALIDATION.
4. CERTIFICATION FOR wt/area OF ZINC PHOSPHATE PER LOT UPON REQUEST.
5. ANNUAL AUDITS USING SEM MICROGRAPHS MAY BE REQUESTED TO COMPARE
CRYSTAL MORPHOLOGY OF PPAP SUBMISSION SAMPLES.
