Legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo

It all started when in the regions near Lake Titicaca, the inhabitants lived

like wild animals, because they had no religion, laws or an organization

that could unite them. These men did not know agriculture and did not

have textile techniques, so they went around naked. They like homes to

caves and fed by hunting and gathering food.

The god Inti took pity on those people and sent his son Ayar Manco

along with his sister Mama Ocllo to civilize those barbarian populations

and found an empire that would honor the god Inti. While Ayar Manco

was teaching men the rules of coexistence in society and to worship the

god Inti, Mama Ocllo taught women textile techniques and domestic

work.

Ayar Manco, also called Manco Cápac, previously had to found a city,

which would be the center of the world. His father, the god Inti, gave him

a golden rod to search for the promised land. Lake Titicaca and sink the
golden staff in the lands where they passed until they found the place

where the rod sinks easily and there found the city of Cusco where they

directed their empire.

Upon reaching a northern region of Lake Titicaca, they were seen by the

locals who mistook them for gods due to the brightness of their clothing

and jewelry. Days passed and Manco Cápac could not find the land

where the cane would sink easily.

But one day upon reaching a majestic valley surrounded by beautiful

mountains, the golden rod was buried in the ground to the amazement of

Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo. This is how they knew that this place

should become the capital of the Inca Empire and the navel of the world.

Finally Manco Capac undertook the civilizing task in the valley of Cusco,

while he was teaching the men agriculture, fishing, house building,

science and religion, Mama Ocllo was training the women in domestic

work and weaving. to create clothes that cover them from their

nakedness. Manco Cápac together with Mama Ocllo were the founders

of the Empire that their descendants would later make great.
