Grade Slab

This document provides calculations to check the thickness of a concrete slab on grade for a forklift with a rated capacity of 4000 lbs and axle load of 11,600 lbs. It determines the modulus of rupture and factor of safety for the concrete. It then calculates the contact area and load from each wheel to find the design moment. By comparing the design moment to charts from ACI 360, it verifies that a provided slab thickness of 5.91 inches is adequate.

WRI method for sizing slab on grade References

Ref. ACI 360R-10

ACI 318-19

ACI 318
Eq. 19.2.2.1.b

Grade of concrete = 20 MPa

f'c = 16 MPa
Ec = 18800 MPa
= 2726.7 ksi

Modulus of rupture (MOR) ACI 318

Eq. 19.2.3.1

l= 1 For normal weight concrete ACI 318

Clause 19.2.4.2
fr = 2.48 MPa
Factor of safety (SF) 1.5

Assume slab thickness = 150 mm

= 5.9 in
MOR/SF = 1.7 MPa
= 239.8 psi

Assume SBC of compacted soil = 250 kPa

K= 25000 kN/m3
92.1 PCI
K on top of sub-base 600 thk = 200 PCI ACI 360 Fig. 4.6
Hence, D/K = 2.75 ACI 360 Fig. A.2.1

Assume forklift truck of rated capacity 4000 lb

Axle load = 11600 lb ACI 360 Table 5.1
Wheel load = 11.6/2 = 5.8 kips per wheel

Take tyre pressure = 90 psi ACI 360 clause

No. 5.2

Hence, contact area = 64.4 sq.in

Diameter of equivalent circle = 9.1 in
Wheel spacing = 36 in ACI 360 Table 5.1

Basic BM = 218 ft-lb/ft/kip ACI 360 Fig. A.2.2

Additional BM = 23 ft-lb/ft/kip ACI 360 Fig. A.2.2
Total BM = 241 ft-lb/ft/kip
Design moment =241 x 5.8 = 1397.8 ft-lb/ft
Hence, required thickness = 5.75 in ACI 360 Fig. A.2.3
Provided thickness = 5.91 in
150 mm OK.
